A Greenpoint couple living on Driggs Avenue near McCarren Park is attempting a novel approach at fighting off what they describe as "hipster creep." They're proudly publicizing their building's long history as the Dekarski Funeral Home from around 1900 until the mid-’70s.

The overwhelming amount of development in Williamsburg and Greenpoint development gets a NY Times write-up today. Not only are residents are getting evicted or priced out of their apartments, construction has been damaging adjoining buildings. Which makes area residents wonder if the Department of Buildings can handle overseeing all the new construction.

Last year, the department issued 24,610 permits in Brooklyn, including 1,924 for demolition and 1,740 permits for new buildings. That was roughly double the demolition and new construction of five years earlier, and it was all handled by 25 inspectors.

A 60 year old woman was hit by a truck at Broadway and Driggs Avenue yesterday morning. Kazimiera Dolik, a Polish immigrant, had been crossing the street when a private sanitation truck was making a turn. A witness told the Daily News the truck "had the light and was going slow," but Dolik's legs were crushed by the vehicle. The driver did stay on the scene and was not charged with any crime - except for driving with a suspended license.

We've been looking for a way to discuss the newly opened Buffalo Exchange in Brooklyn. The vintage chain just opened recently for all of your thrifty needs. They're also a bunch of do-gooders, teaming up for the next few months with the Humane Socieity to give the fur back to the animals!

We spotted this strange piece of streetart off Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg. We read the Wikipedia entry on Bertrand Russell, and learned a lot of interesting facts: he won the Nobel prize for literature and was an outspoken anti-war activist, and in 1931 became an Earl. His philosophical work was varied but always marked by his belief in the value of mathematical precision and logic. He apparently knew the deal about a lot of things-- but to what in particular was the writer of this piece referring? Does anyone know?
