Prospect Heights mom and Park Slope Food Coop member Yvonne Brechbuhler got a little something extra in a head of organic lettuce she recently brought home: a little green frog “no bigger than the tip of her pinky finger," according to the Daily News. Brechbuhler discovered the frog (pictured) only when she took out the lettuce to make a salad – after it had been in her refrigerator for three days. She insists that her fridge has no frog infestation and speculates the frog hitchhiked in the lettuce from South Florida, presumably seeking fame and fortune in the big city.

A spectator at Fenway Park in Boston took to the field and interrupted the game during last night's Red Sox-Yankees rubber match. With the game still tied 1-1 at the bottom of the 7th inning, Boston first baseman Eric Hinske was leading off for the Sox and was the first batter to face pitcher Joba Chamberlain, who relieved Roger Clemens. Hinske managed a double to left field after facing a full count at the plate and was practically chased to second base by an idiot who leapt to the field and raced to high-five the Boston baserunner.
he succeeds.
Nothing distracts from this sub-freezing weather like a good flick. Here's a few options out this weekend in New York Theaters. Ryan Phillippe works hard to figure out Chris Cooper's espionage secrets in the new thriller the super human, flammable commuter.
There hasn't been much going on to mark the occassion, but The Daily News put together a Top 10 list of their favorite Letterman moments over the years. Their picks include Madonna's 1994 appearance in which she "dropped 13 F-bombs", Britney breaking the news she was pregnant with a 2nd child just last year and of course Drew Barrymore who came on the show and flashed Letterman in 1995.
Things are starting to pick up around here. The weather was nice, people were out leaving the cave from the post-New Years hibernation and getting back on their feet. It's still coming around, but the rock scene is starting to show some life as well...
Remakes and sequels and genre formula, oh my! February is a great month for releasing exactly what the studios think the people will pay to see and this week's release schedule is a textbook example of this development by marketing focus group strategy. Oh well, doesn't mean Gothamist is ready to give up on moviegoing quite yet. Here's a few suggestions to guide your weekend viewing.
- Nicolette Sheridan does not look over-Botoxed with fish lips!
Gothamist loves movies (especially those by any "Anderson" director). That's why each Friday, we'll highlight the best and worst in both indie and blockbuster movies as well as the latest in trailers (because admit it, they're the best part of the movie-going experience). We will try our hardest to refrain from such overused phrases as "a non-stop laugh riot", "high octane fun" and "so funny I pished myself!" But no promises.
And in the NYC related part of this story, a Staten Island couple married in Massachusetts were harassed and heckled by a drunken busboy with chants of "Yankees suck!" and threats to beat up the NYC guests. The busboy even banged on the hotel room door of a relative, scaring the relative to take refufe with the newlyweds on their honeymoon night. The groom professes confusion, because the Red Sox had beat the Yankees nights earlier and the groom wasn't even a baseball fan, and is looking for damages. The hotel denies that the incident occured. Gothamist takes this as a cautionary tale of what happens when you're not married by witches in Salem, Massachusetts.
Today's Gothamist Interview is with Michael Tully, who appears in one of the ads.
Angelina Jolie was upset when the studio de-nippled her Lara Croft picture. A recent egregious nipple moment in a movie was in 50 First Dates, when a rain-drenched Drew Barrymore's nipples are a little too distracting to what was supposed to be a sad moment in the film. Yes, we know it was an Adam Sandler film, but 50 First Dates is actually a lot more complex than you'd think. Complex, with walrus penis size jokes (check out the "Sandler & Sivuqoc" clip here).

Some of the couples they look at are Drew Barrymore and Fabrizio Moretti ("young love"), the new Governor of California and his Kennedy wife ("This is a strained kiss..."), Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith ("...he feels that she is fragile and has to protect her"), and Madonna and Britney Spears ("There's no pleasure there - just faking it for a photo op.").
Gothamist has been eagerly awaiting the opening of the Ben Stiller-Drew Barrymore "comedy" Duplex not because we really want to see it, but because we wanted to read A.O. Scott's review. And how did we know A.O. Scott would review it? Just a hunch, as he's a Park Slope resident, the film was filmed in Park Slope...we may not be able to spell, but we can add. Here are two quotes we like from Scott's review:
Has it really been ten years with Conan O'Brien? Gothamist caught Conan's Late Night 10-Year Anniversary last night and we're thankful for sophisticated yet childish humor Conan delivers night after night (and last night's glimpse of Will Ferrell in his leprauchan hot pants - super sexy, yo). Here's a list of Conan highlights from NBC, which has many mentions of the Masturbating Bear (yay!) and recent highlights, like the Claymation episode:
but Gothamist suspects Shirley is either blind or prone to hyperbole - Lenny Kravitz is hot.
Ouch - Tom Green, in yesterday's Times feature about his new MTV talk show, said, regarding not being on speaking terms with ex-wife Drew Barrymore, "When we got divorced, we did so because we didn't like each other. Do you talk to people you don't like?" Well, as a matter of fact, Gothamist does. But it's because we want to mess with their minds.
All the talk about Charlie's Angels Full Throttle being about female empowerment is a joke, because it's just about a bunch of girls being silly and their T&A. Of course Gothamist knew that, but the evidence is too overwhelming not to comment on. For starters, a painful-to-read interview by Sean Smith of Newsweek, with the Angels, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. Here's a sample:
