Greenwich South: New York's Newest Neighborhood

To construct the World Trade Center, Greenwich Street was disconnected from the Battery to the south and what came to be known as Tribeca to the north. Now, the city is attempting to reintegrate the street into a new neighborhood by extending it through the redeveloped WTC site. So the 41 acres south of the World Trade Center site, between Broadway and West Street, is being rebranded "Greenwich South." (Take that, Tribeca North!) The Downtown Alliance has just released a design study full of big ideas for the neighborhood; their ambitious plans foresee "a model for the 21st century business district."

Re:Construction Continues to Add Color Downtown

Downtown Alliance's Re:Construction initiative has been going on for a couple of years now, and they continue to use construction sites as canvases. Today and tomorrow, two new art projects—Rainbow Conversation and Botanizing on the Asphalt—are being installed in separate Lower Manhattan construction sites (Louise Nevelson Plaza and Hudson River Park along West Street, respectively).

After the stunning Giants' Super Bowl win, people cheered like they hadn't seen a Super Bowl victory in 17 years! Throughout the city, folks were stumbling onto streets, chanting the names of players and even getting arrested.

As Gothamist recently noted, New Year's and the following week or so are a particularly festive occasion for the Japanese. Which is no doubt why Haru decided to celebrate the grand opening of its newest location on Wall Street last Wednesday. Hordes of sushi-crazed suits crowded the restaurant located in the historic Beaver Building for the gala event, which was also a benefit for the Downtown Alliance.

, which chronicles these affairs from the point of view of the novel design team with which he collaborated. He also chucked a few zingers in the direction of the architect David Childs and former Governor Pataki. Left relatively unscathed was the developer Larry Silverstein, owner of the acclaimed new building (7 World Trade Center) in which the event was held.

Sometimes less is nice. Take for instance this map from the Downtown Alliance BID. Is it very useful for your average Gothamite? Meh, not so much. Is it a nice example of an easy to use online tourist map? Yes, especailly if you like keeping the tourists in designated "tourist" areas. Will we send it to friends from out of town who e-mail looking for a leg up on things to do in an afternoon all the way downtown? We'll see...

If you work in the Financial District, Gothamist suggests you check out the Downtown Alliance's Dine Around Downtown event, where you can try samples of food from restaurants like Capsuto Freres, Ciao Bella, Bouley and Danube, and Les Halles Downtown, for $3 to $5. The event will be held at Chase Manhattan Plaza (between Liberty & Pine and Nassau & William Streets), from 11AM-3PM. Here's a PDF of participants. [If it's raining, the event will be on Thursday, May 20.]
It's also Taste of New York tonight, where restaurants offer their finest for an evening of enjoying food and raising money for good causes. Restaurants participating include Lever House, Wallse, BLT Steak, Riingo, The Harrison, Blue Hill and the Danny Meyer empire of Gramercy Taven/Union Square/Blue Smoke/Tabla/Eleven Madison Park (Meyer is a chair); bartenders participating include Dale DeGroff and ones from from Masa and Milk & Honey . There may still be tickets left; the tickets are steep, from $250 and up, but they benefit benefits a number of organizations, including hunger relief non-profit Save Our Strength, God's Love We Deliver (meals to individuals affected by HIV), Food Bank For New York City, and City Harvest.
