If nothing else, The Youth of America really knows how to drop truth bombs, especially about the things that matter. A few days ago one 12-year-old wrote an essay (presumably for school) about that sneaky plain doughnut, the one that's always trying to fit in with all the other much more interesting doughnuts. The passionate young pastry lover penned this following takedown of the fauxnut:
One 12-Year-Old Wages War On Plain Doughnuts
Chris Christie: Obama Is "A Very Dangerous Politician"
Oprah Winfrey has been trying to attract viewers to her new OWN show, Oprah's Next Chapter, and perhaps this weekend's politics-heavy episode will do the trick? The former talk show host with well-documented weight issues sat down with notoriously rotund New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for a discussion of everything from President Obama ("as good a politician as I’ve ever seen") to how he knew his wife was the one (she suggested they go steal some doughnuts) that airs Sunday night and they even talked about being the butt of fat jokes on national TV!
Dun-Well Doughnuts Opens Today, Bringing Sweets To The Vegan Masses
Dun-well Doughnuts (who brought us the Faux Gras Doughnut) is finally opening its doors today! The East Williamsburg storefront is located at 222 Montrose Avenue, and proprietors Christopher Hollowell and Daniel Dunbar say it's the premiere vegan doughnut shop on planet Earth! They note, "Vegans and those with egg and dairy dietary restrictions often sacrifice flavor and texture to satisfy their sweet cravings, but Dun-well Doughnuts allows them to enjoy fried doughy delights along with their non-vegan friends."
A Faux Vs. Foie Gras Doughnut Taste-Off!
Yesterday the Do Or Dine owners—who introduced us to the controversial Foie Gras Doughnut not too long ago—came by our office for a little taste test. On the other side of the table: the Faux Gras Doughnuts, created by the Dun-Well vegan doughnut company, and filled with The Regal Vegan's Faux Gras. Despite having put out beer and knives for our guests, the meeting was cruelty-free—in fact, it was very amicable! (The Do or Dine gentleman even offered to fill the vegan doughnuts with their jelly.) Gothamist staff indulged in the treats, and here are some thoughts from those who tried both versions:
For The Record: Sitting Near A Playground Without Children Is Legal
Good news for fans of sitting near playgrounds without children! Back in June we told you about four twentysomethings who were ticketed by the police because they were sitting, eating doughnuts, in a Bed-Stuy playground unaccompanied by children. Two months later at least half of those tickets have been dismissed and sealed. Meanwhile in Manhattan, at least, it seems that cops are giving elderly women warnings about where they are sitting rather than tickets. Oh, and the Parks Department seems to understand that their signage can be a little confusing if placed in the wrong spot.
Brooklyn Chef Arrested For Riding Tricycle On Sidewalk
Bed-Stuy restaurant Do or Dine, last seen raising the ire of vegans with their foie gras-filled doughnuts, are making waves again today, this time with the local police. We spoke to chef Justin Warner to find out what went down after he got caught riding his tricycle on the sidewalk near his restaurant.
Do Or Dine Does Their Doughnuts With Foie Gras
For more than a few years chefs have been quietly toying with one of the great culinary combinations: foie gras and doughnuts. But finding a place where you could with any consistently find that so-silly-it-works delight was never simple. Now all you have to do is go to Bed-Stuy. The two-month-old "American izakaya" Do or Dine is doing its best to have the liver delight on its menu Wednesday through Saturday.
Krispy Kreme Tries "Healthy" Angle, But Still Pushing Doughnut Milkshakes
Krispy Kreme, the doughnut chain we've long suspected laces their sugar-glazed pastries with crack, is attempting to destroy the deliciously caloric foundation they've built their empire upon by adding "healthy" items like oatmeal, yogurt and fruit juice to their menu. Because that plan went over so well at McDonald's, too.
Video: "Doughnut" Ticketing Cop Caught On Camera
Over the weekend two officers in Brooklyn handed out summonses to four people in the Lafayette Gardens Playground in Bed-Stuy for eating their doughnuts in a playground unaccompanied by a minor. After being made to wait for half an hour while the officers wrote their summons, it turns out that one of the ticketed took out his iPhone and tried to get the police to explain what was going on. He didn't get very far:
"Doughnut" Tickets: NYPD Doesn't Track "Unaccompanied Adults In Playground" Summonses
On Monday, we brought you the story of two women who were given summonses in Brooklyn over the weekend for eating doughnuts unaccompanied by a minor in a Bed-Stuy playground. And as our tipster noted then, they weren't the only ones ticketed by the police on Saturday—another couple who also chose to enjoy their doughnuts in the park met the same unsympathetic arm of the law. And while the 79th Precinct isn't commenting on the story, it seems increasingly likely that this is a case of officers looking to fill quotas.
Two Women Ticketed For Eating Doughnuts In A Brooklyn Playground
The police may not be ticketing for smoking in the parks, but they are still ticketing parker visitors for crimes like...eating a doughnut in a playground. Yup, this weekend the police gave two young women in Bed-Stuy summonses for eating doughnuts in a playground while unaccompanied by a minor.
Celebrate National Donut Day With Free Donuts
It's sort of cruel that National Donut Day comes during swimsuit season, but if we must celebrate deep fried dough in June, then so be it. And on that note: Happy National Donut Day! Might we suggest you head over to Dunkin' Donuts or Krispy Kreme for a free glazed treat? Both chains are giving away free donuts—at the former, you have to buy a beverage to get your donut, but at the latter they're just handing them out to anyone!
Peter Pan Doughnuts Coming to Cobble Hill!
Good news for Brooklynites who aren't lucky enough to reside in the borough's glorious Northern Dominion, where Peter Pan Doughnuts holds thousands of fatties in its thrall. The wickedly popular and delicious Greenpoint institution—whose doughnuts are so irresistible that Tina Fey wants to have intercourse with them—is coming to Cobble Hill. The Brooklyn Farmacy on Henry Street is now selling Peter Pan doughnuts on Saturday morning, Cobble Hill Blog reports. Could this be the precursor to a second Peter Pan location in Brooklyn? Let's all clap together and see if we can make it reality!
Tim Hortons Pits Timbits vs. Munchkins, Free Coffee Monday!
[S.W.A.G. UPDATE BELOW] Predictably, it's being called the doughnut wars: news that beloved Canadian coffee-and-doughnuts chain Tim Hortons will replace thirteen prominent NYC Dunkin' Donuts locations operated by the Riese Organization on Monday morning has all kinds of North Americans drawing battle lines in the powdered sugar. By the end of next month, sixteen Tim Hortons will be open in NYC, pitting Munchkins against Timbits (thankfully no A-holes are involved).
Two Cops, Minus McLovin, Do Doughnuts in Brooklyn
A mother of two says that she witnessed two cops "doing doughnuts" with their patrol car on a Bay Ridge baseball field. While walking around the neighborhood early Sunday evening, January Hagan saw the patrol car revving up in the outfield until it began spinning out of control. She says that the car spun so wildly that the officers almost hit a pair of kids on tricycles, telling the NY Daily News, "The police car came within inches of killing two little children." When her husband asked the officers what was going on, the driver puffed away on a large cigar and sped off. The News reports that tire marks were left on the infield and outfield and still visible the next morning.
