At last year's Dominican Day Parade, a pregnant teenager was stabbed in the head and raucous street parties required police response ( including mace—see video below). So for tomorrow's parade, lawmakers and law enforcement officials are hoping for a more festive and less-violent day with an increased police presence. Also: They'd like people to not drink/be drunk, and stores that sell alcoholic drinks to close early. State Senator Adriano Espaillat said, "There were young people walking in the street with open containers of alcohol, many of them drunk... This behavior that we saw last year in Washington Heights is not descriptive of Dominican pride. We will not be embarrassed again."
More Cops On Hand To Monitor Drinking, Violence At Tomorrow's Dominican Day Parade
Video: Cops Mace Revelers at Dominican Day Parade
The website Rhythm and Bleu has posted a series of from-the-hip videos from the Dominican Day Parade on August 8th. Most of the videos, shot in Washington Heights, show revelers crowding the streets, playing music, singing, and grinding together like millstones in a gristmill. It's all good clean fun, but then the cops had to roll up. As an NYPD cruiser and an unmarked cop car slowly make their way through the massive, chanting crowd, two plainclothes officers suddenly exit the vehicle and spray mace at the bystanders, seemingly without warning. This occurs at the 1:38 mark.
Rangel: "It's Not Over Till It's Over"
Rep. Charles Rangel marched in yesterday's Dominican Day Parade and when he wasn't telling kids to stay in school— "No escuela. No dinero. No school. No money"—he did tell the Daily News, "It's not over till it's over - and negotiations can proceed before and during the so-called hearing." Yet he wouldn't confirm whether he already signed a deal that Republicans nixed.
Pregnant Teen Stabbed in Head at Dominican Day Parade
A 16-year-old pregnant teen was stabbed in the back of the head at 47th Street Between 6th Avenue and Broadway yesterday afternoon as the Dominican Day parade wound to a close. The girl, who said she is a few weeks pregnant, was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is listed in stable condition. Witnesses tell reporter Myles Miller that the stabbing might be the work of Patria, because the gang's chant was heard throughout the procession.
Dominican Day Parade Takes Over Sixth Avenue
Yesterday was the 27th Annual Dominican Day Parade. The festivities made their way up Sixth Avenue, from 36th Street to 56th Street, with tens of thousands of spectators cheering on the Dominican celebrities, floats, performers, and, yes, politicians (Mayor Bloomberg, City Comptroller Thompson were among those on hand) along the route. NY1 notes, "The event was originally held in Washington Heights, but has since moved downtown as the city's Dominican population grew."
Dominican Day Parade Revelry and Violence
Yesterday saw tens of thousands of people celebrating the 25th Annual Dominican Day Parade on Sixth Avenue. The parade's organizer, Carlos Velasquez, told the Sun, "The crowd is getting younger and younger as they're learning the language and becoming a part of the city."
NYC's Airplane Terror Plot Handling Was Okay!
Mayor Bloomberg emphasized that the city's reaction to the British airline terror plot was appropriate and that the city had been informed. During yesterday's Dominican Day Parade, the mayor said, "We were informed; I'm not at liberty to tell you specifics. In this case, we didn't really have to do any more; we've already kept the city at Level Orange in terms of our threat assessment since back at 9/11." And when asked about not going public with certain information, he said, "When you have an operation like this you are always struggling with how much do you tell people and how much do you run the risks of leaks and shutting down the investigation and letting the terrorists go through." Unless it's a subway terror plot the night you were invited for a mayoral debate - then it's okay to go public.
