Westminster Dog Show Says Any Dog Can Be A Champion

Westminster Dog Show Says Any Dog Can Be A Champion

You know what Saturday needs? More puppies. At 8 p.m. the Westminster Kennel Club show will begin airing on USA, and this year they will introduce six new breeds to the competition, bringing the total up to 179. The new breeds are the Boykin spaniel, the Bluetick coonhound, the Redbone coonhound, the Cane Corso, the Icelandic sheepdog and the Leonberger. However, show announcer David Frei notes that it's not all good grooming and prancing. "The public sees that dog so disciplined in the show ring," says Frei. "What they don't see is that same dog outside rolling in the mud, or drooling, or shedding on your black pants." Westminter Dogs: they're just like ours! more ›

PETA Takes Protest Inside Westminster

Not only did PETA set up shop outside of the Westminster Dog Show at MSG again this year, with the Grim Reaper making an appearance—but they even got inside and nearly stole Sadie the Scottie's thunder! What did sweet Sadie ever do to PETA? more ›

Pretty Lady: Sadie The Scottie Wins Westminster

Last night, Sadie the Scottish Terrier won the Westminster Kennel Club's 134th Best in Show. The four-year-old pup was favored to win it all, since she won the American Kennel Club/Eukanaba Championship and the National Dog Show in the past few months. Her handler Gabriel Rangel said, "She was perfect. I couldn't ask for anything more." more ›

Scottish Terrier the Favorite for Westminster Dog Show

The Westminster Dog Show is kicking off tomorrow at Madison Square Gardens and above are just a few of the canine competitors. A four-year-old Scottish terrier named Sadie is favored to win, but she has a reputation for being skittish—two years ago she was spooked by a handler’s squeaky shoes, the sound of thumping on wooden boards covering the ice hockey rink and a TV monitor. Last year, she was still acting erratically: she went to the bathroom on the green carpet, right in front of judges, reports the AP. So don't call it yet, it’s still any dog's game. more ›

PETA Plans Purebred Protest At Westminster

PETA Plans Purebred Protest At Westminster

The Westminster Dog Show is just days away, and before those cute pups get to strut their stuff... PETA has planned a protest. They tell us they'll greet the dogs and their owners outside of MSG on Monday with tombstones and a message that purebred enthusiasts are basically the grim reaper for shelter dogs. Their banner will read: "Every Dog Bred Means Another Dog Dead," and they'll be standing amongst a graveyard with 40 tombstones (um, send us your photos?). Each tombstone will represent every 100,000 animals killed in animal shelters each year because of a lack of good homes. Last year the organization likened the American Kennel Club to the KKK. more ›

Dog Days and Nights at Madison Square Garden

Yesterday was the first day of the Westminster Kennel Club's 133rd Annual Dog Show (yes, there was some protest). The terrier, hound, non-sporting and herding groups were seen: The top terrier was a Scottish terrier named Ch Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, top hound was a Scottish deerhound named Ch Gayleward's Tiger Woods, the top non-sporting dog was a standard poodle named Ch Randenn Tristar Affirmation and the top herding dog was a puli named Ch Cordmaker Field Of Dreams (videos here). more ›

PETA Protests Westminster Dog Show

PETA Protests Westminster Dog Show

What does the Westminster dog show have in common with the KKK? According to PETA: plenty. The organization donned white robes and pointy hats as they protested the show outside of Madison Square Garden yesterday, declaring "the American Kennel Club promotes pure-breeding of dogs that is harmful to their health." Last year they explained this on their blog, and this year they took it to the masses with materials that read: "The KKK and the AKC: BFF?'' Such accusatory acronyms! more ›
