If Paul D. Miller was an insect, he'd have extraordinarily long antennae. Miller, who makes music under the name DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, is a walking encyclopedia of music, known for a catholicity of taste that makes room for everyone from John Cage to Kool Keith. And his expansive curiosity extends beyond the cultural, to the environmental and political; his newest creation is Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica, a multimedia production that uses film and music to examine global warming.

Elsewhere in the ist-a-verse
Halloween is Tuesday, which means this weekend is really the time for all of the –ists to celebrate. And whether they’re designing super-spooky costumes or talking about the super-spooky upcoming elections, we’d say that they’re doing a fine job of it.
The SummerScreen Series
SummerScreen (you know, like sunscreen) is The L Magazine's addition to the already successful summer of McCarren Park Pool events.
Pencil This In
EVENT: Every time a new song by Madonna, Bloc Party or...anyone really, come sout - it's pretty safe to say it'll be remixed within a week. Tonight DJ Spooky discusses the art of the remix at the Apple Store. All you need is a little imagination, some knowledge of modern sampling and production techniques and, of course, a Mac.
This Week's Music Picks
Recently nominated for the the UK's Mercury Music Prize, NYC's Antony & The Johnsons released one of the most unique and captivating albums of 2005. "Antony , the ethereal voice of Antony and the Johnsons, sings like a Wim Wenders angel and—when necessary—can swear like a sailor" [Village Voice]. Last time Antony played Bowery Ballroom, he was joined on stage by Rufus Wainwright and Boy George, both of whom also appear on his album. CocoRosie, who also collaborate with Antony in studio & on stage, open the show at Town Hall on Thursday (tix still available)
Coolfer's Music Picks
Well, the Siren Music Festival is over and we have to go back to actually paying for our live music--most of the time. The next week is filled with great shows, and a handfull of them are either free or require a very small donation. Gotta love NYC in the summer!
