If you don’t let me cut your hair, I will punch you with this ring.” It is alleged that Harpal initially refused to go into the bathroom with the defendant because he feared that the defendant would hurt him with the scissors.

When David Clarke of Queens received information from a bank about a $180,000 second mortgage on his Rosedale house - a mortgage he never applied for - he decided to contact the police. And Queens authorities found a Brooklyn couple who had been using Clarke's identity to buy a home in Long Island. Yesterday, the Queens D.A.'s office charged Emerick and Donna Martin with identity theft, second-degree grand larceny, first-degree scheme to defraud and much more for scams that totaled $1 million. Here are the crazy details from the Queens D.A.'s press release:

District Attorney Brown said that, according to the charges, the defendants took out two mortgages, totaling $1,123,000, on a residence located at 266 Pine Acres Boulevard in Dix Hills, Long Island, using the name and social security number of the victim, David Clarke. Thereafter, on December 19, 2006, it is charged, the defendants, posing as David Clarke and Donna Clarke, and a third unapprehended individual, went to a Westbury, Long Island, mortgage broker and requested a second mortgage of $180,000 on the real Mr. Clarke’s Rosedale property. At the mortgage closing on January 11, 2007, the defendants allegedly presented a forged driver’s license in the name of David Clarke and completed the paperwork by supplying the actual loan number, job information, telephone number and addresses of the real Mr. Clarke.

Now, not that thieves are smart, but didn't they realize they might be discovered since the real Clarke could easily be contacted? Or were they betting on the general bureaucracy of banks to shield them.

A man who raped two women was arrested and will arraigned today by the Queens DA's office. Eric McCoy had posed as a cop and threatened the women by saying he would arrest them in order to intimidate them. From the DA Richard Brown's press release:

District Attorney Brown said that, according to the criminal charges, at pproximately 5:00 p.m. on December 4, 2006, the defendant approached a 27-year-old woman as she exited a bus in the vicinity of Rockaway and Sutphin Boulevards, produced an I.D. card and identified himself as an investigator. As he questioned her, the defendant allegedly took the victim’s bag and planted a packet of what appeared to be marijuana in the bag. When he pulled out the packet, the defendant placed the victim against a wall and spoke into a black walkie-talkie – giving her the impression that he was talking to other officers. When she began to panic, the defendant allegedly told the victim that he would take out his gun and shoot her if she moved and informed her that she was in serious trouble and subject to arrest. At this point, the defendant allegedly told her that he was taking her in for questioning at a surveillance room where other officers were stationed.

McCoy took the woman to a motel room where he raped her. Then, on January 2, he approached one teenage girl, who managed to get other help, but two hours later, he threatened and raped a 17 year old.

An ugly tale from this weekend unfolded from the Queens District Attorney's office. Two white men were charged with beating two Chinese-Americans in Douglaston, and then tried to get away from police later on by crashing into the police cruiser and hurting the officers. From the DA's press release:

District Attorney Brown said that, according to the criminal charges, four Asian males – Reynold Liang, 19, John Lu, 19, David Wu, 19, and Wing Chung Poon – were in a white Lexus at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2006, when the defendants [19 year old Kevin] Brown and [20 year old Paul] Heavey pulled up alongside of them in a 1998 Toyota and began cursing and shouting racial slurs. At one point, the defendants allegedly drove behind Liang’s Lexus and intentionally rammed it. Fearful, Liang drove away in an attempt to escape from the two defendants. Believing he had eluded the defendants, he pulled over at the intersection of 44th Avenue and Douglaston Parkway, where victim Lu got out of the car to inspect the damage to the rear of the Lexus. As he did so, the defendants reappeared. Exiting their vehicle and approaching Lu, the defendants allegedly punched him about the head and body, causing him to suffer lacerations requiring multiple stitches and substantial pain, including several loose teeth. During the attack the defendants are alleged to have uttered more racial slurs. In coming to his friend’s aid, victim Liang was also allegedly punched and kicked about the head and body by the defendants. Crawling back to his car, Liang picked up “The Club” which was then allegedly grabbed from him by the defendants who used it to hit him numerous times about the head and body, causing him to sustain a possible fractured skull and substantial pain to his chest.
