Liquor Store Owner Plans To Give Chicks To Customers

About those rabbits in the Greenpoint liquor store window display? They allegedly belong to a friend of the owner, and will return back home after Easter... but the chicks, they can be yours! In a disturbing update, Miss Heather says the proprietor "has changed his plan" (which was to slaughter them at a farm in six weeks) and that "anyone who wants a chick after Easter can have one." Which means there will be lots of abandoned chicks around town in about one week from now. Unless Farm Sanctuary saves the day! Spokesperson Meredith Turner told us this morning: more ›

Liquor Store Puts Bunnies and Chicks on Display

Liquor Store Puts Bunnies and Chicks on Display

Yesterday Miss Heather came across this sad sight, the latest window display at T & N Wine and Liquor store on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint. The establishment’s proprietor, Chris, told her he ordered 25 chicks from a hatchery, which were delivered via the USPS. They're currently being held hostage in the liquor store display window until just after Easter, when they will be promptly moved to a farm upstate, and killed six weeks later. Allegedly they were bred for body mass, and after that amount of time their legs will no longer be able to support their weight. more ›

Dyker Heights Lights 2009 in Photos

It it's December, it must be time to visit Dyker Heights, that Brooklyn neighborhood famous for its transcendent Christmas light displays. The spectacle draws onlookers from around the world, and was immortalized in a truly hilarious documentary called Dyker Lights, which takes a priceless "behind-the-scenes" look at the predominantly Italian-American families during preparations for the annual festivities. (PBS will be broadcasting Dyker Lights again this year on Christmas Eve and Christmas day—it's not to be missed.) more ›

Macy's White Bike Valentine Display Oddly Familiar

Macy's White Bike Valentine Display Oddly Familiar

Hmm, where have we seen white bikes like this one before? Oh yeah, they're locked up in cities across America to mark locations where cyclists were fatally run over. Nothing like the memory of blood-stained asphalt to make you want to run out and buy a pretty white dress. In a boneheaded move reminiscent of DKNY's failed fashion week bike-vertising, Macy's is now utilizing what appear to be replicas of the sadly familiar Ghost Bikes in their flagship store, as part of an adorable little display called "My Funny Valentine." more ›

(It airs again on PBS Thursday night!) more ›

Bergdorf Goodman's Creepy Holiday Windows

As far as holiday window displays have gone this year, Bergdorf Goodman may take the Christmas cake for their design. Sure, it'll frighten children, and possibly even adults, but the holidays can be a scary time. Bergdorf's is just keepin' it real, kids. Wally G explains that the display is titled Calendar Girls; as for the aesthetic "David Hoey and his window design team drew inspiration for the theme from the dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History. The 58th Street windows, as well as those of the men's department across the street, featured fanciful anthropomorphistic depictions of leisure-time activities." more ›

Times Square Brightens Up With 17-Story Walgreen Sign

Drab and dreary old Times Square is finally going to get some razzle dazzle starting tonight when a massive 17,000-square-foot, three-sided diagonal LED sign is turned on at 1 Times Square, right where the New Year's ball drops. Designed by D3 LED to promote the Walgreen's flagship location—not to mention other publicity-deprived corporations like Kraft, Johnson & Johnson, and Colgate—the "spectacular" display runs off almost 30 computers and uses 12 million energy efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Within the sign are 13 big plasma screens displaying "coordinated, dynamic content." You are powerless to resist! more ›

Betelnut Girls as Art

If you happen to see a young Asian woman sitting in a display window basking in a pink neon light sign that reads: "All Your Nut Needs," don't be too alarmed. Gossip Girl Goes Retail

Gossip Girl Goes Retail

Gossip Girl is officially back, with their new season premiering last night. There were British lords, Hamptons parties, people who aren't rich getting looked down upon by people who are rich (as well as other cookie cutter plot devices), and a number of puns involving Chuck Bass's name. Now, to insure an absolute takeover, the show has stepped off the small screen and invaded the windows of Henri Bendel. Racked reports on the 5th Avenue display, noting, "By our count, it looks like the display features two Blairs, one Serena, one Little Jenny Humphrey, and one dark-haired other girl." Give them one more season and they'll be slumming it with their own H&M designs. Bendel's has been one of the many NYC locations used in the show--it was where Dan spied Serena in the very first episode! more ›
