Inside Granduca, Flatiron's New Sicilian Eatery

Inside Granduca, Flatiron's New Sicilian Eatery

Granduca di Sicilia, a new Italian ristorante, brings old world charm—and classic Southern Italian specialties—to the Flatiron. New York has no shortage of pizza, but Granduca rises above with its Sicilian pies hot out of the wood-burning brick oven and seafood pastas like capellini with sea urchins and bottarga. more ›

Pies 'N' Thighs Benches: Innocent Resting Spot Or Illegal Rowdy Peace Destroyer?

Pies 'N' Thighs Benches: Innocent Resting Spot Or Illegal Rowdy Peace Destroyer?

Insanely popular southern comfort BBQ restaurant Pies 'N' Thighs is in trouble with the Community Board that oversees Williamsburg. The restaurant is currently up for a liquor license renewal, but the board is threatening to withhold its recommendation for the license, all because of some benches the owners installed on the front exterior of the restaurant. No food or drink is served on the benches, but the Community Board is playing hardball with the restaurant... because we certainly can't have people sitting outside and talking on the Southside of Williamsburg! more ›

Torrisi Italian Specialties Guys Eye Tavern On The Green

Torrisi Italian Specialties Guys Eye Tavern On The Green

The owners of the hot and trendy restaurants Torrisi Italian Specialties and Parm are among the restaurateurs sniffing around the dessicated corpse of Tavern on the Green, which the Parks Department showed off to potential operators today. "We’re taking it all in," Torrisi co-owner Zalaznick told City Room during the tour this morning. "The question is how casual they’ll let the restaurant be. It used to be a pretty formal place." During the tour and Q&A that followed, the Parks Department let it be known that they do indeed want the new iteration of Tavern to be casual and accessible. The city is spending $10 million to renovate and shrink it, and the Wall Street Journal reports that Assistant Parks Commissioner Betsy Smith made it clear that the new Tavern should be "a moderately priced restaurant" that's not as "fanciful and glitzy as before." more ›

Inside Lady Gaga's Papa's Italiana Trattoria Joanne

Inside Lady Gaga's Papa's Italiana Trattoria Joanne
             + 0 more

According to our research, Lady Gaga is a recording artist whose ubiquitous song "Poker Face" makes some people want to blow their brains out just to get it unstuck from their heads. Her fame and wealth have escalated to such a degree that even people genetically associated with her attract media attention. For example, Joanne Trattoria, a "neighborhood" restaurant on the Upper West Side, might have gone overlooked if the owners weren't Gaga's parents (and if the keywords "lady gaga" didn't get even more clicks than a story about "Snooki Kim Kardashian Rehab Kitten Daily Show Sex Tape"). So here's a look inside Joanne, you monsters. more ›

Check Out Whitehall, The Latest From Owners Of Highlands, Mary Queen Of Scots

Check Out Whitehall, The Latest From Owners Of Highlands, Mary Queen Of Scots

The space formerly occupied by kitschy ice cream parlor Sweetiepie (where you could choose to dine inside a birdcage, if you're into that sort of thing) has been completely transformed into Whitehall, by the team behind Mary Queen of Scots and Highlands. The interior design is inspired the post-war utilitarian aesthetic of old London parks and train stations. As you can see, there is a lot of tile and reclaimed this and that, including park benches and old mirrors. The modern-industrial angle is softened by warm lighting and comfortable banquettes, plus a lot of gin. more ›

Inside Caffè Storico, The New-York Historical Society's New Gem Of A Restaurant

Last month The New-York Historical Society—the oldest museum in New York City—completed a $65 million renovation to its Upper West Side home. And this weekend, the Society flings open the doors to its new restaurant, Caffè Storico (Italian for “historic”), operated by restaurateur Stephen Starr, the guy behind Buddakan and Morimoto. The first thing you'll probably notice are all that pretty Chinese and 19th century European porcelain and Staffordshire china (all from New-York Historical Society’s collection) adorning the walls. Also striking: a giant marble slab formed into a cicchetti bar, where small plates are prepared and served. As you can see, it's a bright, airy room replete with dazzling chandeliers, high ceilings, and cheery yellow banquettes. more ›

Fancy New Gastropub The Fulton Features Flat Screen TVs Hidden Behind Mirrors

Fancy New Gastropub The Fulton Features Flat Screen TVs Hidden Behind Mirrors

Hidden behind a ghastly pile of construction supplies and other debris resulting from the DOT ripping up Fulton Street, you'll find the deluxe new gastropub The Fulton, which opened last week. The guys behind "upscale" sports bar The Ainsworth have teamed up to create a clubby environment where hedge fund bros can bring their dates on game night. The gigantic space is divided into a bar area and a separate dining room up a couple of steps, and both areas feature tufted leather banquettes and plenty of flat screen TVs cleverly disguised behind mirrored glass and antique picture frames. more ›

Must Have: The Anchovy Tartine At Beaumarchais

We make no secret about our anchovy obsession over here—most Saturdays you'll find us hovering at the Bon Chovie booth at Smorgasburg, where the fried anchovies will rawk your world. If you share a similar anchovy passion, you should add Beaumarchais, a French brasserie in the Meatpacking District, to your anchovy bucket list. Chef David Diaz recently launched a new fall menu, and there's one particular item on there we keep dreaming about. more ›

Isa, Latest From Freemans' Owner, Open In Williamsburg With Roof Garden
             + 1 more

One of the most fashionable new restaurant openings of late summer is Isa, the new rustic chic Williamsburg venture from Taavo Somer, owner of The Rusty Knot, Freemans restaurant and Freemans Sporting Goods. (Not to be confused with Freemans Sporting Gifs.) Freemans' decaying beauty (reclaimed wood, distressed everything, taxidermy) has been hugely influential in downtown restaurant design and in Brooklyn, so his new joint on the corner of Wythe and South 2nd Street fits right in. The restaurant, which grows some of its produce on the roof, has been "soft open" for friends and family for over a month now, and now it's popping for real. Be prepared to wait for a table, contemplatively stroking your beard. more ›

Where To Take Your Dad For A Fantastic Father's Day Meal

Father's Day is this Sunday, and he's sick of your thoughtless ties and formulaic George Foreman grills. So take your pops out for something nice this year—a proper meal. After all, he's the one who taught you to open a beer bottle with your teeth and sent you off to prom with a tear in his eye (and condoms in your wallet). Here are our picks for some dining deals around town; call the restaurants for reservations. more ›

Padless Miscreant Waiters Use "Memory" To Diners' Dismay

Padless Miscreant Waiters Use "Memory" To Diners' Dismay

Just as your server doesn't barge into your cubicle to tell you that you should be using more Outlook reminders so that you won't forget those pointless meetings you attend, restaurant patrons probably shouldn't demand that their servers take their order with a pen and pad. Today's Post describes the practice of waitstaff memorizing their customers' as "all the rage," and describes the effects of such lawlessness on diner psyche, as one tells them "Every time a waiter doesn't write anything down I think three things: One, she or he is definitely going to forget. Two, since when does being a good waiter mean having a steel-trap memory? Show me the pad! And three: I feel anxious." Wait, could you repeat those last two? We weren't listening. more ›

Check Out Eataly's Big New Rooftop Beer Restaurant, Birreria

Don't call it a beer garden! The management of Birreria insist that even though their handsome new rooftop oasis atop Eataly is producing three cask-conditioned ales right there on the 15th floor, the establishment is most certainly not a beer pub. When it comes to the menu, "we're not just throwing out some staples," the management emphatically declared at last night's media preview. The full menu is still "under construction" but we're told chef Alex Pilas will be serving "rustic Northern Italian cuisine" influenced by the country's Austrian neighbors. more ›

Foie Gras Cappucino, Edible Flowers Abound At Mr. Robata

You may get a sinking feeling as you approach Mr. Robata, the new Japanese restaurant on Broadway, in the north end of the theater district—you'll find it located next to a souvenir shop and directly next door Flash Dancers, "A Gentleman's Club." Not a promising location (depending on what you're into) but behind its doors awaits a little oasis of sophisticated Japanese cooking. To start, you may consider the Foie Gras Cappuccino? more ›

Books for walls? Now we've seen everything! And so will you if you step inside David Bouley's long-delayed Japanese restaurant Brushstroke, which puts 12,000 boring old (recycled) paperbacks to good use as the walls in the bar/lounge. Who will be the first sake-bombed customer to idly pull out one of the books and bring the entire restaurant crashing down? Well, first it has to open; after years of anticipation, the restaurant (menu below) is finally expected to officially debut on April 20th (thought it's in "soft-open" mode now). more ›

Inside Saint Vitus, The Big New Place To Drink, Eat, Rock Out In Greenpoint

"Finally, Greenpoint has a real fucking ROCK BAR!" declare the owners of Saint Vitus, the new 2,500 square foot bar, eatery and venue opening in Greenpoint next week. Owned by a group of guys who've been behind the bar at places like Bar Matchless, Lil Frankies and No. 7, Saint Vitus (named for a Black Sabbath song that is itself named for the nervous system disorder) was a social club, then a plumbing school in a past life. Now, as you can see from these photos, designer Matthew Maddy (Weather-Up, Anella, The Box) has transformed it into a seductive party destination. more ›
