Last Night's Action: A Perfect Sunday

Last Night's Action: A Perfect Sunday

Giants 24 Jacksonville 21: The Giants sleepwalked through the first half, falling behind 17-6 before waking up and rallying for the victory. The second half was a different story as the defense forced a turnover on the Jaguars first possession which led to a field goal. New York then tied the game thanks to a five-play/88-yard drive and two-point conversion run by Ahmad Bradshaw. Jacksonville went ahead 20-17 with just under six minutes left in the game, but a Manning to Boss 32-yard pass put the Giants on top and a fumble recovery by Antoine Rolle sealed the victory. more ›

Last Night's Action: Two Wins

Last Night's Action: Two Wins

The Knicks won their fourth-straight game, 110-107 over Charlotte, jumping out to a huge lead and then hanging on at the end. And the Nets won in overtime, 107-101, over Atlanta. Brook Lopez had his best game of the season, scoring 32 points to go with 9 rebounds. more ›

Last Night's Action: Nets Win Eighth Game

Last Night's Action: Nets Win Eighth Game

Nets 93 Sacramento Kings 79: While a win would be good news for any other team, it's remarkable news for the New Jersey Nets. For those keeping track, this means that if the Nets can win one more game in their remaining 11, they'll tie the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers' for the most losses in a season (the Nets have lost 63 so far). more ›

Last Night's Action: Do You Believe In Miracles?

Ok, so maybe it isn’t a “miracle” but when you are 5-52, beating Boston in Boston is a pretty special moment. And, after the first few minutes, it looked like they would be heading to another loss as they dropped to a 12-2 deficit. But, they closed out the quarter with a 27-15 run and never looked back. Brook Lopez had 25 points and Devin Harris added 23 as the Nets had their best day of the year. more ›

Last Night's Action: The Nets Win While The Knicks Still Suck

Last Night's Action: The Nets Win While The Knicks Still Suck

  • Nets 103 Charlotte 93: It was the third quarter that did it as New Jersey surged to its fifth win of the year. Devin Harris had 17 points and nine assists while Courtney Lee added 21 points.
  • Chicago 118 Knicks 85: Don't be fooled by any of the trade rumors, the Knicks still can't compete in the NBA. Defense would help as New York allowed the Bulls to shoot 60% and pull down 11 more rebounds. Either way, this looks like another season where the Knicks head to the lottery- too bad they don't own their own pick.

Last Night's Action: 00

Last Night's Action: 00

Milwaukee 114 Knicks 107: Remember when the Knicks started the season 1-9? And remember how they then fell to a season-worst 11-games under .500 at 3-14? Well, they are right back there again after losing to the Bucks Friday night. Nate Robinson got the start, but shot 3-for-12. David Lee turned in another double-double, but his 32 points and 15 rebounds were wasted. The Knicks were once a team in contention for a playoff spot, now there are headed for oblivion more ›

Last Night's Action: Knicks Salvage Finale

Last Night's Action: Knicks Salvage Finale

Knicks 93, 76ers 92: The Knicks do not win often in Philadelphia. In fact, they had lost nine straight games dating back to Dec. 17, 2004. But David Lee's layup with 13.3 seconds remaining snapped that streak and salvaged the finale of a three-game road trip. Those two points were two of 24 by Lee, who was backed by 18 by Wilson Chandler and 17 from Al Harrington. The Knicks made 31 of their 61 two-point field-goal attempts but only five of the 19 3-pointers. more ›

Last Night's Action: Guess What The Nets Did....

San Antonio 97 Nets 85: Brook Lopez had a huge game, scoring 28 points while pulling down 11 rebounds, but he couldn’t do it by himself. Without Devin Harris, the Nets didn’t have anyone to pick up the slack and the fell to Tim Duncan and the Spurs Sunday to drop to 3-34. On the plus side, the 1993-94 Maveircks went 2-39 to start the season, so the Nets are ahead of that pace. more ›

Last Night's Action: No Wins Here

Last Night's Action: No Wins Here

  • New Orleans 103 Nets 99: They came close to another win, actually leading in the final seconds, but Chris Paul hit a layup with eight seconds left to put New Orleans up for good. The Nets had one last chance, but Yi was called for setting an illegal screen to clear a path for Devin Harris.
  • Islanders 4 Dallas 3: Rick DiPietro made it back on the ice, but he couldn’t hold a 2-1 lead. Dallas blitzed the Islanders with 15 shots and three goals in the second period to earn the win.
  • Tampa Bay 3 Devils 0 (Postponed in the second period): Turn the lights back on! A failure with some of the lights at The Rock forced the postponement of Friday’s game. The game will resume at 9:12 left in the second period at a later date.

Last Night's Action: Rangers Showing Life

  • Rangers 4, Panthers 1: Marian Gaborik scores? What else is new? He now has 26, still tops in the NHL. Vinny Prospal's two goals, now those were a surprise. He hadn't scored in 14 games. Chris Drury added the Rangers' first goal as the Blueshirts rolled to their fourth straight win. What's gotten into them? This is the best streak the Rangers have been on since they won seven straight after losing their first game. They play the Islanders for the third time in 11 days on Saturday.

Last Night's Action: A Win Away From Home

Last Night's Action: A Win Away From Home

  • Nets 103, Bulls 101: Devin Harris hit a running floater with 15 seconds left to put the Nets on top to stay. They watched a fourth-quarter lead wilt from 10 and were trailing before Harris' heroics. Brook Lopez continued his dominant second season with 25 points and 10 rebounds. This was the Nets' first road win this season and second win of the season. Yes, it is Dec. 8.

This NBA Season In NY: Just Wait Till Next Summer

This NBA Season In NY: Just Wait Till Next Summer

For basketball fans in New York, the upcoming NBA season is really all about next year. July 1, 2010, to be precise; the exact moment when free agents like LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh hit the market. It’s a strange year because you won’t have much to root for and apart from a few core players; the Knicks and Nets will be willing to trade away players in exchange for cap space next summer. And don’t forget Knicks’ fans, former GM Isiah Thomas traded away the 2010 number one pick for Stephon Marbury, so the draft lottery isn’t a possibility. more ›

Last Night's Action: Wake Up Martin!

Last Night's Action: Wake Up Martin!

  • Nets 111 Detroit 98: They didn’t quit on this one as Devin Harris had a great game and Keyon Dooling poured in 29 points. Technically, they still have a chance at the playoffs, but realistically the season is over.

    Last Night's Action: 'Unacceptable'

    Last Night's Action: 'Unacceptable'

“It’s just unacceptable,” said Vince Carter. Enough said. The Nets lost a 108-99 decision to the lowly Timberwolves, losers of seven straight. Remember that the Nets are theoretically in the playoff hunt and this loss becomes a lot more distressing. The Wolves had lost 18 of 20. Carter had 36 points, but he was basically a one-man show. Devin Harris had four turnovers to go with his 19. more ›

Last Night's Action: A Puzzling Result

    • Nets 115, Knicks 89: Want a sign that Coach Mike D'Antoni is upset with the Knicks? How about some playing time for Demetris Nichols and Cheikh Samb, two players on 10-day contracts? In the second and third quarters, the Nets lit up the scoreboard for 70 points -- they made 16 of 22 shots in the third -- and they did all this without All-Star Devin Harris. Vince Carter had 29. Keyon Dooling, starting in place of Harris, had 17 points. After a disastrous four-game swing through the west, the Nets got the final game of this road trip in the win column. Despite wearing green St. Patrick's Day uniforms a day late, the Knicks had no luck, making two of 15 three pointers. Al Harrington had 21 points.
    • Hurricanes 4, Devils 2: Even Martin Brodeur needs a day off every once in a while. He had started 10 consecutive games since returning from his biceps injury -- and set the NHL wins record in the process. Kevin Weekes is no Martin Brodeur. Who could blame the Devils for being emotionally drained after celebrating their goaltender Tuesday in New Jersey and then traveling to Raleigh, N.C., for a game the next night? Zach Parise and Brian Gionta had the goals in the loss.

Things Getting Ugly for the Nets

Things Getting Ugly for the Nets

Every day brings more bad news for the Nets, losers of 12 of 16 after a 121-96 loss to Denver on Monday. Devin Harris didn't play with a sprained shoulder, and Sean Williams got arrested for allegedly staring an altercation at a Denver area cell-phone dealer. Nice. The Nets lost the four games of this five-game road trip against Western Conference teams. They play the Knicks on Wednesday. The Nets now trail New York by half a game and sit in 12th place in the Eastern Conference, two games out of a playoff spot. more ›

Last Night's Action: Not Enough in Cleveland

Last Night's Action: Not Enough in Cleveland

    • Cavaliers 98, Knicks 93: Only the Lakers have beaten the Cavaliers in Cleveland this year. So the Knicks didn't have that great a chance of knocking the LeBron James gang's home record to 28-2. The tough part about this game? James, who had three triple-doubles in his past four games, didn't even play that well. He had 19 points but only shot three free throws and went 9-of-17 from the floor. Al Harrington's 26 wasn't enough for the Knicks. Nate Robinson had 20 but went 1-for-5 from 3-point range.
    • Clippers 107, Nets 105: Normally losing to the Clippers is bad enough. But losing on a last-second 3-pointer after seeing an All-Star point guard leave the game just adds injury to insult. Devin Harris departed with a sprained shoulder and not even Vince Carter's 41 points could save them. The Nets have lost 11 of 15.
    • Rangers 4, Flyers 1: What struggling power play? The Rangers entered this contest having converted on zero of their previous 12 man-advantages. Playing the Flyers for the second straight day, the Rangers got power-play four goals, including two from Sean Avery in eight chances. Avery also drew two penalties. As Avery continues to get under the skin of opponents, he keeps making the Rangers better.
    • Islanders 4,Blackhawks 2: How about Peter Mannino? He made 40 saves in his first NHL start to give the Islanders another win. Mark Streit scored twice on the power play.

    Last Night's Action: Close....

    • Orlando 105 Nets 102: Once again, New Jersey came close to beating an elite team from the Eastern Conference and once again they didn’t pull it off. The Nets had the lead heading into the fourth quarter and they had chances to pull off the upset, but they couldn’t convert. Devin Harris had 25 points in the loss.

Last Night's Action: Shutout No. 100

Last Night's Action: Shutout No. 100

    • Devils 3, Flyers 0: Martin Brodeur is eager to make up for lost time on his march toward records. Sunday's win over the Flyers saw the goaltending legend pick up his second shutout in three games since returning from a biceps injury. That means he has 100 of them in the regular season, three shy of Terry Sawchuk’s mark of 103. He is four victories shy of tying Patrick Roy for the all-time lead in that category. Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Gionta and Johnny Oduya had the Devils' goals.
    • Hornets 99, Nets 96: Devin Harris had 26 points and 14 assists, but his six turnovers proved critical in this loss. The Nets held a one-point lead with a minute to go, but Harris had his pocked picked by Chris Paul in a play that led to the go-ahead basket. The Nets, who had their two-game winning streak snapped, also got 26 from Vince Carter.

Last Night's Action: New Coach, Same Result

Last Night's Action: New Coach, Same Result

    • Maple Leafs 2, Rangers 1 (SO): If John Tortorella is the Rangers' savior, he will need more than one game to prove it. The Rangers failed to score in the shootout as they dropped this game to a team below them in the standings. That group of clubs is growing smaller by the day. Wade Redden, one of the players vilified for underachieving under Tom Renney, had the Rangers' only goal.
    • Penguins 1, Islanders 0: This game is not going in a time capsule. The first goal was scored 57 minutes, 32 seconds into the game. The Islanders had 21 shots overall and four in the third period. And this was against a Sydney Crosby-less Penguins team.
    • Magic 114, Knicks 109: Nate Robinson may have gotten the better of Dwight Howard at the slam dunk contest two weeks ago, but Howard had the last laugh Wednesday. He only had 24 points and 21 rebounds. If only Eddy Curry had been there to put a body on him. Robinson did have 32 points in 36 minutes, but the Knicks aren't going to win too many games in which their opponents shoot 51 percent from the floor and attempt 38 free throws.
    • Nets 111, Bulls 99: This hasn't been a bad two-game stretch for Devin Harris. He had 42 -- including 19 in the fourth quarter -- after a 39-point effort Monday. Even the people most impressed with the deal that brought him to New Jersey didn't think he'd be able to take over games this soon. He did just that in the final period. Even if the Nets don't make the playoffs this year, they can take solace in the emergence of a true star not named Vince Carter.

    Last Night's Action: Fantastic Finishes

  • Nets 98 Philadelphia 96: Devin Harris hit an amazing three-pointer at the buzzer to snatch a victory away from Philadelphia. With no timeouts, the Nets inbounded the ball with 1.8 seconds and Harris had to toss up a one-handed prayer from halfcourt. Somehow it went in and Harris ended up with 39 points and an amazing end to his night.

Last Night's Action: A Blowout for the Knicks

Last Night's Action: A Blowout for the Knicks

    • Knicks 127, Raptors 97: Nate Robinson is calling it the "funnest basketball of his career." Luckily his on-court skill exceeds his grammatical ability. He had 26 to go along with a career-high 32 from Wilson Chandler and a measly 24 from David Lee. The Knicks never trailed, led by as many as 38 and have now equaled last season's win total of 23. They did all this with Chris Wilcox dressed but on the bench. Larry Hughes was in street clothes and ineligible to play since the players sent to Chicago have yet to clear their physicals. The two teams meet again Sunday in Toronto.
    • Wizards 107, Nets 96: Things are not as rosy for the Nets. They lost to the lowly Wizards one day after making no moves at the trade deadline. Vince Carter, too expensive to swap, had 17 points. Devin Harris had 26 points and 10 assists. For reference, Washington improved to 13-42 with the win. The Nets aren't world-beaters, but they should take care of the Wizards at home.

Last Night's Action: Extension of Domination

Last Night's Action: Extension of Domination

    • Spurs 108, Nets 93: The Spurs have the Nets' number, that much is clear. Tuesday's win was the 13th straight by San Antonio over New Jersey. Brook Lopez can feel good about his 18 points, but he did allow Tim Duncan to dominate the game to the tune of 27 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Matt Bonner's mini explosion to start the third quarter took much of the suspense out of this one. Vince Carter had 25 points and Devin Harris had 21.
    • Warriors 144, Knicks 127: Teams should not score 127 points in regulation and lose. But that didn't happen with the Knicks on Tuesday. They allowed the most points in any NBA game this season en route to their fifth straight loss. Don Nelson plus Mike D'Anonti will always equal a shootout. Al Harrington had 22 in the first-half but just 24 overall in his return to Golden State.
    • Kings 4, Islanders 3 (SO): Yann Danis got beat once in the shootout, but that was one time too many. The Islanders blew leads of 2-1 and 3-2. At least the Kings are as hot as any team in the NHL. Doug Weight, Tim Jackman and Andy Hilbert scored for the home team.

Last Night's Action: At Least The Nets Won

Last Night's Action: James Follows Bryant

Last Night's Action: James Follows Bryant

    • Cavliers 107, Knicks 102: Kobe Bryant put up 61. LeBron James didn't quite equal that with his 52 points, but he did have a triple-double. The man many hope will be a Knick in two summers added 11 assists and 10 rebounds, including a last-second board to give him the first 50-point triple-double since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The Knicks became the first team to allow back-to-back 50-point scorers since 1962. The good news? The Knicks led in the third quarter and came within one point multiple times in the fourth. The bad news? The Boston Celtics visit the Garden on Friday. What will Paul Pierce do in the third act of the Knicks' hell week?
    • Nets 115, Wizards 88: The beauty of this game: When the standings are examined at the end of the year, this one will count just like any other win. Forget the Wizards played with only eight guys -- and that the Wizards stink. Devin Harris had 26, the Nets shot 61 percent from the floor. This is the Nets' third win in a row.

Last Night's Action: Nets Grounded vs. Hawks

Last Night's Action: Nets Grounded vs. Hawks

    • Hawks 105, Nets 88: At one point this game was tied at 61. Then the Hawks backcourt took off. Devin Harris (20 points) and Vince Carter (18 points) combined to make only 11 of 31 shots. Joe Johnson (an All-Star) and Mike Bibby did their work well. Even Atlanta's Flip Murry had 23 points. Just as the Nets seemed as if they were making progress, they have stumbled again. This was their eighth loss in nine games and third straight.
    • Devils 4, Penguins 3 (OT): Break up the Devils! Or at least take away Jamie Langenbrunner. He has scored overtime winners in two straight games. He also tied the game with 31 seconds left in regulation. The Penguins are probably seeing him in their sleep. The Devils trailed by two at the 8:01 mark, but Brendan Shanahan scored on the ppwer play to bring it to one. Pittsburgh finished with only 16 shots. Announcer Mike Emrick was honored before the game.

Last Night's Action: Robinson Makes A Statement

Last Night's Action: Robinson Makes A Statement

    • Knicks 112, Hawks 104: Who knew Nate Robinson had the 10th-most popular jersey in the NBA? He did, apparently. He put up 20 points in the fourth quarter and led the Knicks to another win at home. David Lee had another double-double and so did Chris Duhon, who dished out 11 assists. Wilson Chandler had 12 points off the bench. His adjustment to that role appears to be going well.
    • Raptors 107, Nets 106: Devin Harris had his shot. He got a wide-open 16-footer at the buzzer but it was to no avail. His counterpart, Jose Calderon, had 17 points and 11 assists. The Nets blew a nine-point lead after one quarter and a four-point lead at halftime.
    • Penguins 6, Rangers 2: Sidney Crosby's return was not good news for the Rangers. Pittsburgh simply has New York's number. In the last eight games, the Blueshirts have lost two games in regulation. Both have come against the Pens.

  • Last Night's Action: Good Ending to a Bad Trip

Last Night's Action: Good Ending to a Bad Trip

    • Knicks 101, Hornets 95: Picking the Knicks to go 1-3 on this four-game road swing would have ben a popular position. Most would have thought they had the team to take care of Oklahoma City but not one to down Houston, Dallas or New Orleans. But an upset in the Big Easty saved an 0-4 trip that started with a disaster in Oklahoma City. They almost blew a 14-point lead late. David Lee had 24, Wilson Chandler had 19 and Al Harrington had 20 off the bench. Next up is a home-and-home against Washington.
    • Nets 103, Thunder 99 (OT): Devin Harris returned but the Nets needed overtime to beat the lowly Thunder. Harris had 17, but rookie Brook Lopez had 31. The Nets started the season 5-12 at home but are now 9-12. They're also .500 on the season at 19-19. Given the low expectations they faced this season, they have to be happy to be mediocre.
