Gothamist would expect Chicago area sports teams to wear special green uniforms just because it's a city that dumps green dye into their river (our rivers can be greenish, thanks to other factors). But when we were checking out the Knicks' website, we learned that the Knicks will wear green uniforms for the first time, thanks to special sponsor, Tourism Island. And while Gothamist thinks this is lame, we understand why the Knicks undertook the sponsorship, beacuse if they ever needed the luck of the Irish, it's tonight, as they will be playing the first place Detroit Pistons. There will be other Irish tie-ins, like the entertainment, food specials (corned beef?), and giveaways, but we're pretty sure that most fans will be drowning their sorrows in beer so they forget the loss.

The Spurs are led by Tim Duncan, their multi-talented Center. Duncan has been the MVP of both NBA Finals he has been in and is currently averaging almost 25 points a game in the playoffs. Duncan had been hobbled earlier in the playoffs with an ankle injury, but he increased his scoring in each round of the playoffs and will have had ten days to rest by the time the Finals start on Thursday.

The Nets led for most of the game, but were overcome in overtime, when there were outscored 12-3. Richard Hamilton led the Pistons with 37 points and Richard Jefferson led the Nets with 27. The Pistons managed 16 blocked shots in the game. Tayshaun Prince had a great game, scoring 18, and added 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 blocks.

Related: Congratulations to whatevs, as his Detroit Pistons defeated the L.A. Lakers for the NBA Championship. Gothamist has yet to send whatevs the spoils from the bet we had for the Eastern Conference finals (because we're still waiting for a new shipment of Gothamist t-shirts!), but let it be known that Gothamist's stance is that the Nets were the second best team in the league this year, given that the Nets took the Pistons to 7 games, whereas the Lakers were defeated in 5. [Scientific calculations on determining the Nets' second-bestness from JW]

Last night, the Tampa Bay Lightning won The Stanley Cup, defeating the Calgary Flames 2-1 in the 7th game of the NHL Finals. Led by Ruslan Fedotenko's two goals, the 12 year-old Lightning franchise won its first championship and is the first team formed in the 90's to win the Cup. There is nothing quite like a 12 year-old team winning The Stanley Cup, a trophy awarded for 111 years making it the oldest trophy in sport. The Calgary Flames franchise is also relatively young, starting in 1980 when the Atlanta Flames moved north. The Flames were attempting to become the first Canadian team to win the Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993.

The Detroit Free-Press' Mitch Albom marvels at Veal, calling him a "big, chunky redheaded bench player"; the Times notes that Scalabrine, though unlikely hero, isn't the best defensive player. Plus, the Star-Ledger on Scalabrine's hot hand. And the Gothamist-Whatevs bet on this series. Game 6 is tomorrow night in East Rutherford.

With the New Jersey Nets and Detroit Pistons face-off in second round the NBA playoffs being one of the most exciting match-ups (well, before game 1, at least), Gothamist and Whatevs have decided to have a friendly wager. If the Nets win, Whatevs will send over some Vernors Ginger Beer, some music from Detroit (Motown, MC5; no ICP, please), and a t-shirt. If the 'Stons win, Gothamist will send over from salt water taffy from Atlantic City, music from one of the Garden State's great musicians (the Boss, Frank Sinatra, Jon Bon Jovi), and a Gothamist t-shirt. May the best team win, obvs.

With improvements on both the Nets and Pistons, both teams know that this series will be different than last year. The Pistons acquired Rasheed Wallace at the trade deadline this season and went 20-6 after he joined the team. In their one game since the Wallace trade, the Pistons beat the Nets, 89-71. That game ended the Pistons' record-setting streak of holding opponents under 70 points at 5 games, which the Pistons were not happy about. The Nets were fouling in the final moments of the game to get the ball back and scored a basket with 1.1 seconds left to give them 71 for the game.
