ART: The Bronx Museum of Art is getting on board the First Friday bandwagon. They'll be opening their doors every first Friday of the month for free, and add a little something extra each time. Tonight their theme is “Say it Loud! I’m Black & I’m Proud” in celebration of Black History Month. There will be a tribute to the late James Brown, and a showcase of independent artists paying tribute to black music.

Two years ago Michel Gondry brought his film The Science of Sleep off-screen and to the three-dimensional world of Deitch Projects. Good news Gondry fans, he's coming back for an exhibit based around his upcoming film, Be Kind Rewind.

Julia Levy was on the scene for yesterday's Art Parade and filed this report:

FILM: The Fusion Film Festival runs thoughout the weekend. The festival was founded in 2004 by NYU students and aims to "highlight the excellence of female filmmakers within the student body and the industry" as well as to inspire future filmmakers. The event is comprised of student screenplay readings, film screenings and in competition, a Master Class, Industry Screening, Retrospective, Industry Panel, and of course...the after party.

Fashionistas and music snobs descend upon the city over the next week with both CMJ and Fashion Week starting. We'll most likely only be attending the former. Before it begins though, we'll ease into the hectic schedule with a few of the following events...even if we should be resting up for the week ahead.

If you're a fan of street art, tonight's discussion at McNally Robinson (50 Prince St) in Soho might be of interest. Moderated by the husband and wife team behind the Wooster Collective, the online resource for street art around the world, The City as Collaborator: Documenting Contemporary Art on the Street panel will focus on how street art has grown and contributed to the city.

Summer in the city is always a slow period for gallery shows. Like any self-respecting Europhiles, many galleries stop opening on Saturdays and occasionally close all together for parts of August. Many of the big buyers have taken their money and fled the city for cooler pastures and almost all of the big art magazines produce only a single summer issue, so those shows that do go up in July and August often tend to just be group shows of works from the gallery's inventory.

The weekend is here, and unfortunately our run of nice weather has run out. The rains will be coming. Luckily the city is prepared with plenty of indoor activities to enjoy, and if you're not scared of getting a little wet there is some outdoor fun to be had as well.

Something we're thinking of checking out this weekend is Dearraindrop's Riddle of the Sphinx Exhibition over at Deitch Projects (18 Wooster). Dearraindrop are an artist collective out of Rhode Island known for their psychedelic pop culture.

Don't get me wrong- it's not like Gothamist isn't into leather, but these Madonna pictures from the Steven Klein show at Deitch Projects are just silly. At this point, avant garde would be taking pictures of Madonna wearing a business suit- or just having lunch at the Taco Bell.

ryan mcginley loves sacerI was looking through some of the pictures from the Ryan McGinley show, and I couldn't help but notice that about 50% are of the young graf artist Sacer who I used to see running around LES with his on-again-off-again partner Earsnot. From about 2000-2002 you couldn't go to an Alife opening or a Deitch Projects show without seeing them everywhere. It's funny that I never noticed that they had a personal photographer in tow. I can't think of any other graf artists that travel with that kind of entourage. I mean, guys like REVS are way too crazy to have someone tagging along with them, and most of the old school guys aren't living that kind of lifestyle. I'll say one thing for Sacer though- he sure has good hair. Another fact: I'm pretty sure the two of them were the first guys in NYC to consistently use glass etching fluid to catch tags.
