New Yorkers Spend A Frightening Amount On Halloween

New Yorkers Spend A Frightening Amount On Halloween

New Yorkers love Halloween, sure, but we didn't realize how much until the New York City Economic Development Corporation told us. Would you believe that New Yorkers spend approximately a quarter billion dollars on Halloween costumes/candy/cards/decorations every year? That is a lot of candy, candy corn bagels, and costumes! more ›

Are The Chelsea Market's Halloween Decorations Too Scary?

The Chelsea Market has their annual Halloween decorations up, and not everyone is happy about it. This year's display shows gruesome scenes featuring zombie babies chewing on body parts and red-eyed demon children, which some parents find too traumatizing for kids. (But this is the same stuff they had last year!) One 34-year-old mom told CityRoom, “I think it’s completely inappropriate to have a zombie baby chewing on a human hand and a zombie child that’s the same age as my child." But what do the kids think? At least three kids, aged 4 to 8 years old, all thought that the display was, and we quote, "Cool!" more ›

The Most Amazingly Decorated Lawn Is On Staten Island

The Most Amazingly Decorated Lawn Is On Staten Island

Something special is going on at 724 Todt Hill Road on Staten Island, even if the neighbors aren't particularly happy about it. Scouting NY hopped the ferry and got some shots of this lawn ornament job that would put many Roadside Attractions to shame. The work is that of homeowners Walter and Alla Shchegol, who have been at it since 2006. A comment thread on SILive.com shows that neighbors despise the statue-saturated space, calling it a roadside distraction. But at least it isn't dolls? It could always be dolls! more ›

Santa And His Reindeer Burn Down Brooklyn Building

Santa And His Reindeer Burn Down Brooklyn Building

Right after the FDNY warns us about fires started by holiday decorations, a three alarm fire has destroyed a rowhouse in Brooklyn. The cause: Christmas decorations! Along with the building at 201 Menahan Street, two other rowhouses were damaged. The fire took place last Thursday at 6 p.m., according to BushwickBK, with neighbors claiming that an inflatable Santa Claus and a mechanical reindeer hanging on the door were to blame, they were allegedly put up a week prior, and connected with extension cords. more ›

Brooklyn Family's $300,000 Christmas Lights

Brooklyn Family's $300,000 Christmas Lights

You could buy a whole new house for the amount of money one Brooklyn family spent on Christmas decorations. According to the Daily News, the Seddio family in Canarsie has been brightening up the neighborhood with their annual display since 1963. They're giving Clark Griswold a little competition, with 250,000 lights, dancing reindeer, elves and talking Santas; this year they added a wreath with 11,000 lights to the roof of the house. Think you can see it from space? more ›

Urban Haunted Houses Emerge

Urban Haunted Houses Emerge

Halloween is right around the corner, and while everyone's getting their best Sarah Palin costume together, others are adorning their houses with creepy crawlers and such. NYMag takes a look at one UES residence that AMNY recently posted some shots of, saying the haunted townhouse belongs to independent financial adviser Richard Medley, his wife, and teenage kids. The tradition has been going on for four years, and they say they get mixed reactions from neighbors (some people don't even like apartment doors being decorated). Have you seen any decked out Halloween houses this season? Send us a photo at tips(AT)gothamist(DOT)com. We're sure there's some good stuff popping up in Greenpoint. more ›

Humbug Co-Op Sues Festive Tenants

A Gramercy Park co-op board is suing the residents of one of the building's units for dressing up their interior door with holiday decorations. Richard Belza and his roommate Andrew Meehan have been decorating their apartment door for holidays like the 4th of July, Halloween, Christmas Valentine's Day, and Easter. Belza is a floral designer and has a knack for decorating, so he doesn't understand why he is being sued.
