Debbie Harry And Lady Gaga Talk About NYC Nightlife Inspiration

Lady Gaga and Debbie Harry discuss their New York City nightlife roots in a new interview with each other, and unsurprisingly Blondie's got a much cooler social muse. She says her song "Mother" is "about the club that was originally called Jackie 60. A lot of people went there, like Leigh Bowery. It was such an important part of my life—for entertainment, for joy, for friends, for distraction, for creativity. When it closed, I just felt so lost. I think the only time that I felt more lost was when Andy [Warhol] died, and it was just 'Oh, my God. Wow. What do I do now?'" more ›

Was Blondie Almost Abducted By Bundy?

Today that old story of Debbie Harry nearly getting abducted by Ted Bundy is making the rounds again, with The Sun running a few quotes from the singer. Stereogum points to the Snopes page which retells the entire story, then picks it apart and declares it to be false. In a 1989 interview, Harry told a newspaper: more ›

Deborah Harry, Recording Artist

Deborah Harry, Recording Artist

Debbie Harry's internationally known as the smart, cool and sexy front woman for pop/punk sensation Blondie, but when it comes to her solo career she prefers to be thought of as Deborah. The slight but significant name change might imply a conservative shift in tone, but her latest album - the first in fourteen years - finds her as vibrant and upbeat as ever. Bad Brains was one of the last bands to take the stage, a short video of that is below, and we expect a lot more video (of the last nights with Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, et al) will be showing up as the day goes on. more ›

controller.controller in...

Toronto's controller.controller have been garnishing critical praise here in the states and fueling dance frenzies north of the border for the last couple years but are only now making their second trip to New York. With their highly infectious melodies from female lead vocalist Nirmala Basnayake they prove that they are more than just the latest band to jump on the dancepunk bandwagon. Recalling the best of female rock vocalists from Debbie Harry to Chrissie Hynde, Nirmala's voice alternates from anxious and angry to pure sonic tenderness as the four boys behind her laydown seriously solid songs of punishing rhythm and dueling angular guitar work. Bust out your dancing shoes because with their nonstop four-on-the-floor disco beats and raging basslines, you won't be able to stand still for long. more ›

Turn Up That Soundtrack

Turn Up That Soundtrack

Gothamist loves movie soundtracks. Paying attention to them has led us to learning about new composers or new artists, whose own albums we realize we must rush out to buy. French critic and film director Olivier Assayas loves the music in movies too and he's programmed a series at BAMcinmatek of his favorite film soundtracks called "I Can Hear The Guitar: Selected by Olivier Assayas," which begins today. more ›
