Now the NJ State Police scandal involving troopers who escorted caravans of luxury cars at extremely high speeds (100-120 mph) has now claimed its first victims. According to the Star-Ledger, the state police "suspended two troopers without pay and reassigned a station commander as the investigation into an unauthorized, high-speed escort of sports cars to Atlantic City last month kicked into high gear." And one trooper is saying car fiend and former Giants player Brandon Jacobs asked for the escort.

NJ State Police Under Fire For Escorting "High-Speed Caravan Of Sports Cars" To Atlantic City
Do you know what the NJ State Police are good at, besides getting governors into nearly life-threatening car accidents (well, when the governors don't buckle up) or flying around governors in helicopters? Escort luxury sports cars at over 100 mph when the drivers really need to get to Atlantic City! There's an investigation into the so-called "Death Race" caravans, one of which included former NY Giant Brandon Jacobs and apparently scared one older driver into nearly driving into a ditch.
Weekend Movie Forecast: Hamlet 2 or Trouble the Water
You know summer's over when the biggest movie opening is Hamlet 2, a Sundance hit about a high school teacher's struggle to save the school's drama program by writing, directing, producing and starring in a zany time-travel musical. (Okay, there's also Death Race, which the Times calls "a supercharged junkyard apocalypse powered by an unabashed relish for brutal comeuppance and a flair for delirious vehicular mayhem.") British funnyman Steve Coogan – you know, the guy who was "always right there with the drugs" for Courtney Love – stars with Catherine Keener and Amy Poehler. Peter Howell at the Toronto Star was not amused: "As much as you want to tell yourself how funny this idea is, it comes across as such only in fits and starts – and mainly from the neglected supporting cast."
Parks Employee Doesn't Brake for Birds
It may have looked like simple joyriding on a Friday afternoon, but the Parks Dept. employee careening around Battery Park near Whitehall St. yesterday afternoon was actually a man on a mission, i.e. to kill as many birds in the park as possible. Martin Hightower has been a Parks Dept. employee since 2005, but was arrested after 911 started receiving calls about a man driving recklessly on a golf cart at the southern tip of Manhattan.
