Big Papi Interested In Playing For The Yankees

Big Papi Interested In Playing For The Yankees

With General Manager Theo Epstein having jumped ship for the woeful Chicago Cubs, the Red Sox have completely imploded since they collapsed down the stretch of this past season. With everyone in Boston collectively freaking out all at once, the team looks set for a complete overhaul. It's so bad, David Ortiz, one of their biggest sluggers of the past decade, is fed up with all the drama...and thinking outloud about the possibility of joining the Yankees. more ›

Jay-Z Suing David Ortiz Over Club Name

Jay-Z Suing David Ortiz Over Club Name

Rapper/entrepreneur/club owner/Yankees fan Jay-Z, along with his business partner, is suing Red Sox star David Ortiz. In a lawsuit filed yesterday in Manhattan Federal Court, the two claimed Ortiz named his Santo Domingo nightclub after Jigga's 40/40 chain of clubs (which are located in NYC, Atlantic City and Vegas). MyFox5 reports that Ortiz's club, called Forty-Forty, is allegedly named after hitting 40 homers and stealing 40 bases in one season. The lawsuit states, "David Ortiz is fully aware of Plaintiff's Manhattan 40/40 club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions before he opened his Infringing Forty/Forty club." more ›

Last Night's Action: Yankees Finally Win Against Sox

Last Night's Action: Yankees Finally Win Against Sox

Yankees 13, Red Sox 6: It may have taken nine games for it to happen, but the Yankees finally beat the Red Sox this season. The Yankees had dropped eight straight to Boston before winning last night in The Bronx. It was the most lopsided start to the season series since 1933 when the Yankees won their first nine games against the Red Sox. The Yankees tagged Sox starter John Smoltz for 8 earned runs, 7 of which came in an 8 run 4th inning. Billy Traber didn't do much better in relief, giving up 5 more runs to the Yankees. Joba Chamberlain, shaky in his 5 innings of work, allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 7 walks. more ›

David Ortiz And ManRam Are On 2003 Steroid List

David Ortiz And ManRam Are On 2003 Steroid List

The Curse of the Bambino has got nothing on steroids. The New York Times has revealed two more names that appear to be on the 2003 list of 104 major leaguers who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs—David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, both of the Boston Red Sox at the time. The list is the same one that dragged A-Rod's off-season through the mud this February when he was outed as testing positive. While names on it continue to trickle out, its legal status is being fought over in the courts. The Times says multiple lawyers connected to the litigation "spoke anonymously because the testing information is under seal by a court order." There is no word on what specific drugs were tested. When Ramirez tested positive for a banned substance in May, he defended it as a fluke stemming from a recent prescription. Ramirez and Ortiz were at the heart of a Boston lineup that led the team to its first World Series victory in over eighty years in 2004, and then another in 2007. more ›

Yanks Try to Bury Ortiz Called Shot Contest

Yanks Try to Bury Ortiz Called Shot Contest

Unless the Yankees turn things around, this summer's All-Star Game and the surrounding festivities will be the last time the current Yankee Stadium enjoys a national stage. If Major League Baseball has its way, one of the lasting images could be David Ortiz's attempt to hit a home run where a fan said the Red Sox slugger would. more ›

Red Sox Jersey Removed from New Yankee Stadium

Red Sox Jersey Removed from New Yankee Stadium

Leaving no potential curse to chance, the Yankees had the Red Sox jersey (allegedly) buried in cement at the new Yankee Stadium removed with great fanfare in front of press yesterday. The David Ortiz jersey, buried by a Yankee-hating construction worker, was found thanks to a $50,000 excavation in the future behind-home-plate restaurant. more ›

Concrete Proof of Red Sox Jersey in New Yankee Stadium

Concrete Proof of Red Sox Jersey in New Yankee Stadium

The Bronx-born Yankee-hating and Red Sox-loving construction worker who buried a Red Sox jersey in the new Yankee Stadium has given photographic evidence to the Post proving it's no tall tale. "Gino" explained, "As I stuck it in, I said, 'The Yankees are done for the next 30 years.' I only put a 30-year curse because I'm 46 and in 30 years I'll be dead, and I won't care if the Yankees win then." more ›

Surprise! Or not. A-Rod Named AL MVP

Surprise! Or not. A-Rod Named AL MVP

In news that isn't coming as a surprise to anyone, Alex Rodriguez, the former and probably future Yankees 3rd baseman, was named the American League Most Valuable Player today. It was the third time Rodriguez was named the MVP, winning previously in 2003 with the Rangers and in 2005 with the Yankees. This past season, A-Rod set career high marks in runs scored (143) and RBI (156). He also led baseball with 54 home runs... more ›

Shea Pay Day

Shea Pay Day

Holy Cow! We actually didn't even know that VitaminWater was made in Queens until Coca-Cola decided to buy the company for $4 billion. The Queens-based owners weren't the only people getting a fat pay-out from the purchase. David Wright, the Mets third baseman who endorses the product, accepted a small slice of equity in the company in lieu of payment last year. Now Wright's small stake in the company is worth $20 million.

Days after inking what would turn out to be his most lucrative endorsement deal, Wright told The Post he opted for an equity stake over a cash payment because "I believe in the company." more ›

Last Night's Action: Yanks Start a Streak

2007_05_redyankeee.jpg

  • Yankees 6, Red Sox 2: Chien-Ming Wang didn't have his best stuff, but he still held himself together long enough for the Yankees to take the opener of this critical three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Alex Rodriguez homered for the third straight game, and the Yankees are back within single digits of the Red Sox in the American League East after winning their second straight game. Jason Giambi also hit a long blast. The offense is starting to come around. It wasn't going to stay at the levels of the recent road trip forever. more ›

Last Night's Action: Avoiding the Hole

Last Night's Action: Avoiding the Hole

  • Mets 6, Nationals 2: Washington's so bad the Mets almost don't deserve credit for beating the Nationals in extra innings. But the win counts just the same, and it came thanks to the two hitters who are supposed to do damage: Carlos Beltran and David Wright. Castoff starter Jerome Williams held the Mets hitless or 5 1/3 innings -- and almost hit a home run -- but the Mets recovered in time. They'll play the rubber game Sunday.

    M-V-Poor

    M-V-Poor

Derek Jeter didn’t win the MVP award yesterday. That isn’t a huge surprise because there was another worthy candidate, David Ortiz. The problem is, he didn’t win it either, Justin Morneau did and once again the baseball writers have messed up. more ›

Round One to the Red Sox

Round One to the Red Sox

The Yankees acquired Mike Myers to get out lefty batters. He has made a career of doing that and through twenty-three games had not allowed a run this season. Unfortunately, he had not faced the best lefty in the American League and when he did, David Ortiz hit a three-run homer to propel Boston to a 7-3 victory. more ›

    MVP to A-Rod

    MVP to A-Rod

No Championship? No problem! Yankees fans can say they have the MVP on their team. Alex Rodriguez won the American League Most Valuable Player award yesterday over David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox yesterday in a vote that not only pitted a the Yankees against the Red Sox, but a position player against a full time designated hitter. Rodriguez received 331 total points to Ortiz's 307. The two players received 16 and 11 1st place votes respectively with Vladimir Guerrero picking up the final one. more ›

The Empire Does Not Strike Back

The Empire Does Not Strike Back

...It just lays down and loses four straight games to its biggest rivals. In the span of four days, the Yankees managed to lose four games to become the first team in baseball post season history to be up three games to none and lose a seven game series. Gotta give credit where credit is due, the Red Sox have guts and they pulled off a miraculous series of wins. The biggest comeback and the biggest collapse in baseball history. You have to wonder though, where did the Yankees vaunted comeback ability go? Where did Mr. Everything/Mr. Clutch/Mr. Captain Derek Jeter go? He hit .200 with one extra base hit. Nothing quite like a lead off man who doesn't set the table. more ›

Big Papi Wins it 2nd in a Row for BoSox

Big Papi Wins it 2nd in a Row for BoSox

So much for going to bed early. Sixteen hours after the end of their last game, the Yankees and Red Sox met up again for game 5 of the AL Championship Series and for the second night in a row, it went to extra innings. Last night, however, the game ran into the 14th inning and was the longest game time-wise in postseason baseball history at 5 hours 49 minutes. more ›

Red Sox "Walk Off" to Force Game Five

Red Sox "Walk Off" to Force Game Five

Now, all Boston needs to do is win 3 more, something that doesn't appear all that likely since no team in baseball history has comeback to win a 7-game series after a 0-3 deficit. Compounding that, and some little curse thing, the Red Sox have a taxed bullpen and Curt Schilling's ankle is in bad shape. Oh, and Pedro Martinez has the Yankees as his daddy. more ›

Four and a Half Up, Two Weeks to Go

Four and a Half Up, Two Weeks to Go

Game one of the series came down to the 9th inning, where Mariano Rivera failed to close the game and the Red Sox eked out a 3-2 win. Rivera's performance Friday, was very un-Rivera like, and was his 4th blown save of the season. Saturday afternoon, Jon Lieber nearly no-hit the Red Sox as the Yankees rolled 14-4. Derek Lowe was horrendous, giving up seven runs in less than two innings of work. Lieber didn't give up his first hit until David Ortiz's home run in the 7th inning. Mike Mussina, not to be outdone, was also lights during his start on Sunday. In his 7 innings on the mound, Mussina only allowed 1 run and 7 hits. Pedro Martinez was hit by the Yankees, and hit often, continuing his team's losing ways against the Yankees when he pitches. After yesterday's performance, the Red Sox are a mere 11-18, including the playoffs, with Pedro on the mound. more ›

    Yanks Sweep Sox

    Yanks Sweep Sox

The Yankees came into the series with a five and a half game lead over the Red Sox, by the first pitch on Thursday night, that lead was seven and a half games. It was a must win game for The Red Sox and their ace Pedro Martinez took the hill. Pedro picked up where he left off last year. After Gary Sheffield disrupted Pedro's focus by calling for time, Pedro plunked him with the baseball. After that, you could almost feel the air turn into the crisp October air this game deserved. more ›

    Red Sox Fumble; Yankees Roll

    Red Sox Fumble; Yankees Roll

Despite three solo home runs by Johnny Damon in the 1st and 3rd and David Ortiz in the 6th, the Red Sox could not hold off the Yankees. Derek Lowe's sinker was done in by the poor play behind him (errors on Nomar Garciaparra and Kevin Millar), the power in the Yankee bats, and speed on the base paths. more ›

Yanks Win After Two Losses at Fenway

Yanks Win After Two Losses at Fenway

Yesterday, the Yankees finally beat the Red Sox at Fenway, taking the 3rd game of the four game series, 7-3 (box score). Paul Quantrill got the win, after bailing out starter Jose Contreras in the third inning. A well rested Derek Lowe got the loss, giving up seven runs in 2 2/3 innings. Despite the victory, one has to wonder if it was the Yankees that performed well, or if it was the pitching of Derek Lowe. more ›
