Miguel Matias called 911 yesterday morning to confess to police that he had strangled his daughter. He lied, however, about where he placed her body. The 34-year-old building superintendent told cops that he killed the 14-year-old girl because she wouldn't stop texting or instant messaging a boy, and that he then dumped her body in the woods. When police searched the Bronx building where he worked, however, they found the partially burned body of a girl shoved into the building's basement boiler.

Yesterday, over a hundred people - made up of "fans, reporters and photographers" - waited outside the Frank E. Campbell funeral home, where the body of actor Heath Ledger had been kept since ME's autopsy. Ledger had been found dead in a SoHo apartment by his masseuse and housekeeper on Tuesday afternoon. The cause of death is inconclusive, but he had a number of prescription drugs in the apartment, many of them to aid sleeping (he had been described as looking tired recently and even told interviewers he had trouble sleeping after filming The Dark Knight).

Mayors from around are in the middle of the three-day Climate Summit being held at the Essex House. And Mayor Bloomberg took the time to explain why mayors must lead the effort to address environmental issues. The NY Times reports that Bloomberg strayed from his prepared remarks and said:

The world really is looking to these cities for leadership. You’re not going to get this from other government bodies. You’re going to get it from the mayors of the world and the cities of the world, where they have to make decisions, and the consequences of their decisions are visible within hours or days. We are the ones that can take this world ahead.

Bloomberg also took time to toot the PlaNYC initiative. Mayor Ken Livingstone, who implemented congestion pricing in London, told him, Can I just give you one word of warning?" Mr. Livingstone said during a news conference in Central Park. "There may be one or two people who will predict doom and gloom. Ignore them."

The Seattle Mariners are in town for a four-game stand against the hometeam Yankees, but Seattle's relief pitcher Julio Cesar Mateo may be asked to stick around or eventually be invited for a longer stay. Something transpired following the Mariners' win over the Yankees Friday night that resulted in Mateo's wife at St. Vincent's hospital, where she arrived bleeding and received stiches in her mouth.Police wanted Mateo to surrender himself to Manhattan's midtown north precinct house to discuss the circumstances regarding the fight he had with his wife early Saturday morning. According to WCBS News, he did so after going missing for several hours and not reporting for Saturday afternoon's game in the Bronx. Eventually he surrendered himself to the precinct house that was expecting him. He left that precinct in handcuffs, arrested by the NYPD, although the exact charges are still unclear. The Seattle Mariners organization wasted no time in distancing itself from an alleged wife-battering player. Mateo has been demoted to the minors as of yesterday.

Last night, the family and friends of Sean Bell were joined by hundreds for Bell's funeral in Queens. Bell was killed during a chaotic confrontation with police officers last weekend. The Reverend Al Sharpton spoke during the service. From the Daily News:

"We must give Sean a legacy, a legacy of justice, a legacy of fairness, not a legacy against police. We don't hate cops. We don't hate race. We hate wrong. We dislike wickedness in high places."

An envelope filled with a white powder was delivered to former President Bill Clinton's West 125th Street office, causing the two floors of the building to be shut down yesterday afternoon. Most of the building was evacuated, but eleven people were quaratined as the police, fire department, FBI, Secret Service and Homeland Secuirty descended to the scene. A source told the Daily News, "An aide opened the envelope, and she went ballistic," when white powder fell from the manila envelope. It turns out the white powder was non-toxic and harmless, but the envelope did have a "rambling diatribe" inside.
