Gun Necklace Airbrushed Out of Politician's Family Photo

The 14-year-old daughter of City Councilman Bill de Blasio is featured in a nice family photo on the website for de Blasio's public advocate campaign. But don't let her innocent smile fool you—teenage Chiara loves guns, and de Blasio doesn't want voters to know about it. It's been revealed that in the original photo, Chiara was wearing a gun-shaped pendant, which was subsequently airbrushed away when the photo was pimped out for campaign literature. When confronted about the cover-up by the Daily News, de Blasio explained, "Our daughter made a mistake in putting on a necklace that was inappropriate. I made a decision to take it out of any literature and she will not be wearing it in the future." But Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics is troubled, because who knows what else de Blasio is hiding? Are those even his children? Still, Sabat gives Chiara a pass on her gun fetish, because "you never blame a 14-year-old—they all do silly, rebellious things, and I guess that's what it was. She's 14. Who cares?" Well, easy for him to say; he doesn't have to generate news content in August.

Ruth Ades-Laurent, daughter of eccentric vegetable peeler salesman Joe Ades, picked up her late father's torch this weekend, appearing in Union Square to sell off some of his remaining stock of peelers.

Father's Murder Makes Powerful NYU Application Essay

Pity the NYU admissions officer who thinks about rejecting 17-year-old Rena Senisi, whose father was stabbed to death by a stranger in 2007 on his way to buy a carton of milk for his daughter's cereal. Senisi (pictured here with her late father and brother) has written a moving account of that fateful day for her application essay, which was also read at the killer's sentencing yesterday. According to the Post, it describes how she "rushed downstairs to find my dad lying there on the ground moaning. I took his head in my hands, saw a little drop of blood on his chin, and ran upstairs to call my aunt and grandma...It would be an honor, an award, and a break for me from this rough period in my life if I could attend NYU." Horrible and tragic, so it's safe to say she's a lock, because obviously the university's going to want to avoid headlines like, "Heartless NYU Rejects Poor Daughter of Murdered Brooklyn Man." And the killer was sentenced to 22 years in jail.

Former TV producer Julie Horner Lankamp was found dead in her Gold Street apartment Tuesday with "her crying young daughter clutching her legs," as the Daily News sensationally puts it. Relatives say they hadn't spoken with Lankamp since Sunday and police don't know how long the two-year-old had been stranded with her mother's body, which had begun to decompose. Lankamp had a broken jaw, bruises, and dried blood pooled near her nose and mouth, but the city medical examiner doesn't believe Lankamp's injuries were caused by a beating. An empty glassine envelope with cocaine residue was found near her corpse, and investigators say her injuries may have been caused by a fall after a drug overdose. Results of a toxicology report are pending, but in the meantime police are looking to interview her ex-husband, who was arrested at the end of last year "for attacking her with a chair while using their child as a human shield," a source tells the News.

Miguel Matias called 911 yesterday morning to confess to police that he had strangled his daughter. He lied, however, about where he placed her body. The 34-year-old building superintendent told cops that he killed the 14-year-old girl because she wouldn't stop texting or instant messaging a boy, and that he then dumped her body in the woods. When police searched the Bronx building where he worked, however, they found the partially burned body of a girl shoved into the building's basement boiler.

Former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey and his ex-wife Dina Matos McGreevey are making sure they're not letting the best interests of their six-year-old daughter get in the way of their bitter divorce. The publicly feuding pair were back in court yesterday, where they were excoriated by a judge. The McGreeveys split when the governor resigned amidst a sex harassment scandal in which he famously announced that he was "a gay-American.""The hatred you have for...

The daughter of Daniel Malakov, the orthodontist who was killed on a playground by a gunman wielding a pistol with a homemade silencer, has been placed in foster care. The girl's physician mother and her family are suspects in the Queens-man's murder. Malakov was shot in front of his daughter in a Queens playground just six days after he'd gained legal custody of his daughter following a bitter custody dispute. A judge at the Queens...
