Last Night's Action: Reversal of Fortune

Last Night's Action: Reversal of Fortune

  • Blue Jays 2, Yankees 1: The Johnny Damon-in-center experiment didn't go well Tuesday. He misplayed a ball by Marco Scutaro -- he's a Yankees-killer -- that turned into the go-ahead double as the Yankees wasted a rare strong start from Darrell Rasner in the opener in Canada. After Bobby Abreu's double scored Damon in the first, the Yankees didn't get anything going. Rasner went 6 2/3 innings against a mostly impotent Blue Jays offense, but he'll take it. The Yankees cannot take losses like this, though.

Last Night's Action: The Rare Laugher

  • Twins 4, Yankees 2: Darrell Rasner made one mistake -- allowing a fourth-inning three-run home run -- but that cost him. Why? Because his offense didn't show up -- again. The Yankees put forth a non-effort against Twins starter Kevin Slowey. One of their two runs scored on a strikeout and a wild pitch. That capped a 3-7 road trip that has made the Yankees reconsider their playoff chances. More bad news? No. 4 starter Dan Giese left with an injury after pitching in relief.

    • Angels 12, Yankees 6: Ivan Rodriguez got cheered on his way up to his first at-bat. Then he struck out, and surprisingly got booed on the way back. The real boos should have been for his handling of starter Andy Petttitte, who had trouble getting on the same page with his catcher all night. The lefty allowed two three-run homers in the third inning, and the rout was on. Xavier Nady did homer and the Yankees helped their run differential by scoring three in the ninth inning, but that doesn't matter in the long run. The Angels own the Yankees, and, now that everyone considers the team from Los Angeles of Anaheim the best one in baseball, New York has the misfortune of playing it nine more times. more ›

Last Night's Action: Maybe Wagner Isn't So Bad

Last Night's Action: Maybe Wagner Isn't So Bad

  • Yankees 8, Twins 2: Darrell Rasner finally pitched well. Yes, the Twins lineup is not great, but Rasner's recent pitching deserved the same description. Bobby Abreu, who has been impersonating a corpse for much of the season, hit a go-ahead homer in what ended up as the Yankee's sixth straight win. The Yankees are playing better despite missing Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui, but how much longer can that last?

  • Pirates 12, Yankees 5: Darrell Rasner didn't have it -- again -- and the Yankees lost to the Pirates for the first time since the 1960 World Series. Of course, the teams had only played each other six times since. Bill Mazeroski hit that infamous home run. The Yankees have no choice but to stick with Rasner, their No. 4 starter, but the righty needs to limit the home runs. He allowed two on Tuesday. Some early double plays -- one by Derek Jeter, one by Bobby Abreu -- cost the Yankees early chances against Tom Gorzelanny. LaTroy Hawkins continued to ask for his release struggle by allowing four runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Last Night's Action: Thank You Carlos!

Last Night's Action: Thank You Carlos!

    • Mets 5 Arizona 3 (13 innings): They simply couldn’t afford to blow this one. Up 3-0, thanks to a brilliant start from Mike Pelfrey, the Mets lost their lead when Billy Wagner served up a three-run dinger in the ninth to Mark Reynolds. Reynolds’ home run came on a full count, with two outs and right after he appeared to get hit by a ball in the foot. But, he was not awarded first and instead he hit a home run that could have absolutely destroyed the Mets if they had lost the game. more ›

    Last Night's Action: 2-1 Is A Bummer

But, the offense couldn’t help him. They got ten hits, but they couldn’t string them together to create scoring chances. Unfortunately, the Yankees best scoring chance was aborted by a horrible call from the umpire. With two on and two outs in the eighth, Giambi was punched out when the home plate umpire said he swung at a pitch that he clearly checked his swing on. The umpire didn’t ask for help and the Yankees’ arguments went for naught, just like their night. more ›

Last Night's Action: Dodging a Bullet

  • Twins 5, Yankees 1: Darrell Rasner turned in his worst outing of the season -- the first that wasn't a quality start -- as the Twins took the third game of a four-game series in the Metrodome. The Yankees' best chance came when a Bobby Abreu liner hit Nick Blackburn in the face. Blackburn would be OK, but the Yankees weren't. They didn't do too much else. They trailed from the beginning -- Minnesota scored twice in the first -- and looked like they were looking forward to the trip back to New York. Too bad they have another game Monday.

  • Orioles 6, Yankees 1: Darrell Rasner allowed only one run in six innings -- a homer to nemesis Nick Markakis in the sixth -- but left with the Yankees trailing, 1-0. By the time the seventh inning was over, the score was 6-0 and Rasner was assured of his first loss of the season. But that burden need not be shouldered by him alone. The Yankees' bats didn't do anything against Baltimore lefty Garrett Olson five days after destroying the lefty. more ›

    • Yankees 8 Orioles 0: Alex Rodriguez hit two home runs, only one that counted, and the Yankees cruised to an easy victory for the first time in ages. Rodriguez hit a home run in the third and then clearly hit a ball off the yellow staircase in right in the sixth, but the umpires ruled the ball was in play and he had to settle for a double Considering what happened Sunday night with Carlos Delgado, isn’t it about time MLB adopted replay? more ›

    • Yankees 5 Detroit 2: It’s only two starts, but Darrell Rasner has given the Yankees exactly what they needed, quality pitching. Rasner was impressive on Saturday, holding one of the more dangerous lineups in the league to only two runs and four hits over six innings. Most importantly, he didn’t beat himself, issuing only one walk. more ›

    • Pittsburgh 3 Rangers 2 OT: In the end it was another weird bounce that brought a close to the Rangers’ season. Last Night's Action: Apple Gets a Workout

  • Mariners 3, Yankees 0: By the time the Yankees return to New York, Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabrera and Robinson Cano could all be on milk cartons. They combined to go 0-for-11 as Jarrod Washburn shut down the Yanks. Abreu's struggles are the most concerning since he's the best hitter among the three and he hasn't walked in over 50 plate appearances. Darrell Rasner pitched well except for a two-run homer allowed to Seattle catcher Kenji Johjima. They'll need rookie Matt DeSalvo to help them stop their two-game skid Saturday.

Last Night's Action: Rookie's Start Ruined

  • Giants 9, Mets 4: Mets pitching put up plenty of zeros -- except in the fifth inning. That's when the Giants, aided by not one but two Bengie Molina homers, scored nine runs off Mets starter Oliver Perez and reliever Lino Urdaneta. Perez looked good otherwise and wasn't helped by the umpiring or a bad error by Damion Easley. The lefty still could have used better damage control.

  • Braves 3, Mets 2: Remember when the Mets couldn't beat the Braves? Oh, that was only two seasons ago? Those times may be back, at least in the first week of the season. After rocking Atlanta on Friday, the Mets lost two straight, including this one Sunday. Aaron Heilman takes the blame on this one -- he allowed two runs in the eighth to squander Orlando Hernandez's start.
