As the Gang Green prepares for their game against the Ravens tonight, bombastic coach Rex Ryan continues to talk a big game (and presumably continues to give his epic pep talks). "Everybody expects us to be a great team, and we expect to be a great team ourselves," he told ESPN. But sports critics have a lengthy list of tips on how the team should accomplish that. Steve Serby of the Post says of a possible winning season:
Jets Get Ready To "Lead The League In Wins"
Pats Fan Sues For Giants Stadium Manhandling
All the bad blood between the Jets and Patriots must be making a lot of vampires pretty sick right about now. A woman has filed a lawsuit claiming that some particularly raucous (or fiercely loyal, depending on how you view it) Jets fans harassed her family at a game because her 14-year-old daughter held up a sign that read "I Love Tom Brady." Didn't they know they were walking into a bear trap with that one?
Darrelle Revis, Jets Reach Contract Agreement
After saying that the team was moving forward without their star cornerback on the roster, the Jets came to an agreement with Darrelle Revis, who sat out Gang Green's training camp during his contract holdout. After midnight, Revis Tweeted, "I'm comin home baby!!! Revis Island LET'S GO," and "it not has only been hard on u guys but it has for me too. I just want to tell yall that I'm sorry for this process and I can't wait to get back on the field."
Jets Moving On Without Darrelle Revis
With Darrelle Revis still holding out against the Jets in order to become the league's highest paid cornerback, and the team forced to cut their roster to 53 people, the New York Jets are moving on without Revis on the active roster. But the Jets aren't saying much. GM Mike Tannenbaum said, “Darrelle’s not here and we’ve planned accordingly. We’ve said that all along that, organizationally, we have to move forward. We’re playing Baltimore in a little over a week, and that’s what we’re prepared to do.”
Ryan's Hope: For Revis Island Drama To End
The Jets' star player, cornerback Darrelle Revis, has been a holdout at training camp for 11 days and the war of the words between his camp and the Jets continues as well. On Tuesday, Revis's agent called the Jets "blatant" liars (the Jets claim the agent refused to let Revis have dinner wtih owner Woody Johnson), so now coach Rex Ryan is offering this plan: Just everybody come to training camp in Cortland, NY! "This is what I would like to have happen: Everyone put their cards on the table. Have Darrelle come here with anybody he wanted and we’ll have Mr. Johnson here. This is the way I would handle it: We’ll call off practice and we’ll have our whole team here and meet. That way there’s no he said/she said or whatever. Let’s just get the thing done. Let’s work it that way."
Making the Call: Locals Make Risky Secondary Upgrades
Darrelle Revis is outstanding, but he can't guard everybody. That much and more was evident in the AFC Championship Game, when the Jets lost to the Indianapolis Colts when Peyton Manning used his stable of receives not guarded by Revis to turn a Jets lead into a comfortable Colts win.
Jets Thinking Super Against Indianapolis
Their fans wrote them off. Their coach said they were out of the playoffs after a late-season loss. Yet with a win in Indianapolis against the Colts, the Jets can advance to their second Super Bowl in franchise history and their first since the 1968 season.
Jets to Face High Powered Chargers Air Attack Out West
This is the game to stop the doubters. If the Jets can go into San Diego and take down the Chargers in Sunday's AFC divisional playof they have to be acknowledged as a true force. Right now, they're only a cute story. Sure, they have beaten the Colts when they lay down, and they have punished Cincinnati two straight weeks. But now they draw the Chargers, who have won 11 straight games and have the best passing attack in football.
Last Night's Action: Jets Back Up Ryan's Words
- Jets 24, Bengals 14: An early touchdown deficit and a road atmosphere didn't stop Mark Sanchez and the Jets in their wild-card playoff win against the Bengals. Shonn Greene and Thomas Jones had rushing touchdowns and Sanchez found Dustin Keller for a long passing score to set up a date in Indianapolis or San Diego next weekend. Darrelle Revis did his job on Chad Ochocinco -- except for a few dubious penalties -- and the Jets defense took advantage of an erratic Carson Palmer. Two missed Bengals field goals also helped. But head coach Rex Ryan said his team should be the favorite for the duration of the playoffs, and the Jets looked like the better team on Sunday.
Jets and Bengals Meet Again, This Time in Playoffs
After taking a must-win game against the Bengals at the Meadowlands last Sunday, the Jets travel to Cincinnati for a rematch in a wild-card playoff. The Bengals may have lain down last week, but they'll be trying all out as they battle the Jets. Remember this: The last time the Jets played a team against a team trying 100 percent, they lost to the Falcons, who had nothing to play for.
Believe It Or Not, Jets Are in with Win
Despite Rex Ryan's premature dismissal of his team's chance at the postseason, the Jets will qualify for the playoffs with a win Sunday against Cincinnati. Ryan said the Jets were "obviously out" after a disgusting loss against the Falcons two weeks ago, but he was mistaken. If the Jets win Sunday in front of a national TV audience against a team that may be resting its starters, they make the playoffs. If they don't, they're out.
Ochocinco Talks Smack About Jets, Fireman Ed
With the their playoff hopes still alive, the Jets face off against the Cincinnati Bengals during Sunday Night Football. And things are already lively, thanks to Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco.
Jets Out to Salvage Pride, if Nothing Else
At 4-6, the Jets are not on the path to the playoffs. At this point, their season is all about making themselves feel better for next year and after that. That's why the debate over a starting quarterback is misplaced. Why sit Mark Sanchez now? Rex Ryan may talk a lot, but he's not silly enough to bench the man the team drafted to be a franchise quarterback.
Jets Try to Back Up Their Words on Field
A Jets beatdown of the Texans, a Patriots escape against the Bills and Rex Ryan's new attitude have the Jets in a chipper mood as they prepare to face the Patriots at home Sunday. Kerry Rhodes, who said the Jets wanted to "embarrass," not simply beat, the Patriots, is especially excited for the game. As if this rivalry needed any more juice.
Giants & Jets Send 13 to Pro Bowl; Start Bickering Now
Eli Manning will be in the same Pro Bowl as his brother Peyton. History is made! (But how does Matt Ryan feel about Eli's inclusion?) The Giants will send six to Hawaii, including both punter Jeff Feagles and placekicker John Carney. Combined age? 86. Their vaunted defense will have only one representative in Justin Tuck. That seems funny. The Giants' stellar offensive line did get some love. Guard Chris Snee will start, and center Shaun O'Hara will be a reserve.
Last Night's Action: Favre Wins Debut
- Jets 20, Dolphins 14: They didn't make it look easy, but the Jets took down the Dolphins to get the Brett Favre era off to a solid, if not resounding, start. Favre, came out of retirement and got traded to the Jets from Green Bay, threw two touchdown passes. The first, to Jerricho Cotchery, was a well-executed play on both ends. The second, to Chansi Stuckey, was not. On a fourth-down desperation play, Favre simply heaved the ball toward the end zone and was lucky that it was not picked off. Favre then had to watch from the sideline as Miami's Chad Pennington threw for more than 150 yards in the fourth quarter and almost led the game-winning drive throwing to stalwarts such as Anthony Fasano and Greg Camarillo. But then Darrelle Revis intercepted Pennington in the end zone, and the game was over. This week, the Jets play at home against the Patriots, who will be without Tom Brady, who is likely done for the year.
- Mets 6, Phillies 3: Averting the disaster of a three-game sweep, the Mets salvaged the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader and the finale of a three-game series against the rival Phillies. Thanks in part to Johan Santana's 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball, the Mets now lead them by two games with 19 to play. Carlos Delgado had two homers -- again -- and also singled in two runs in the first. His resurgence has been noteworthy, but this rumblings of his earning consideration for the MVP award is a product over-excitement. How quickly Mets fans forget how much he stunk until June (and how much great Albert Pujols has been). The news was not all good; Billy Wagner could be done for the year.
- Across the way in Flushing, Serena Williams won her third U.S. Open title by defeating Jelena Jankovic in straight sets. She also took over the No. 1 ranking in the world with an impressive performance in a well-played match. That said, would it kill the women to play a deciding third set once in a while? It hasn't happened since 1995, when Steffi Graf was still roaming the courts.
- Mariners 5, Yankees 2: Fourth place? Get used to it. The Yankees fell to the lowly Mariners again Sunday, losing two of three in the Pacific Northwest. Mike Mussina stayed stuck on 17 wins after taking the loss. His bid for 20 is the only thing worth following these days.
If the Jets Play and No One Watches...
As admirable as the Jets' effort has been during the second half of their lousy season, don't count on it staying there the final two weeks. Sunday's game against the Titans will mean nothing to them -- though Tennessee needs to win it to have any shot at the playoffs -- and who knows if the Jets will be motivated after their grudge match with the Patriots last week. Their season right now is about watching young players like Darrelle Revis.
Jets Can't Get Out of Own Way
What better symbol for the Jets' season than cornerback's Darrelle Revis' collision with safety Abram Elam? Revis, going for an interception against Buffalo's Lee Evans, instead got a mouthful of his teammate and a great view at the Bills receiver's march to the end zone. That score clinched Buffalo's 13-3 win in the Meadowlands on Sunday. The Jets have now lost twice to the Bills and have fallen to 1-7. Their only win came against the Dolphins, but the NFL will still insist that it counts.
Jets' Problems Run Deep
Chad Pennington gets all the attention, but the Jets' problems run deeper than the quarterback position. Eric Mangini said as much during an unusually open news conference following the latest Jets debacle, a 38-31 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday. Pennington looked fine in the first half, throwing two touchdowns to Lavaranues Coles. In the second half, the rest of the team's wheels fell off at once. Kenny Watson tore up the Jets' rush defense. When the Bengals did go to the air, Darrelle Revis, the rookie cornerback and a No. 1 draft pick, got called for two pass interference penalties. Nick Manigold, the center, botched a snap. On the last meaningful series, Pennington had an interception returned for a touchdown.
Mangini, Jets Deal With Greater Expectations
Life's easier the lower you keep everyone's expectations. Bill Waterson once had Calvin impart that wisdom in the comic strip, and the Jets are about to find that out as well. Last year, Coach Eric Mangini worked wonders to get the team into the playoffs and created a situation where media and fans will be looking for more. Don't be surprised if the team doesn't improve upon last year's results.
The Locals Get Defensive At The Draft
The Jets and the Giants took very different approaches to the draft on Saturday, but when the day was over, both had primarily upgraded their defenses. Five of the six selections made by the locals were defensive players and both teams hope they addressed some key needs.
Giant Troubles
What is going on with the Giants? They cut three starters before free agency began and have so far only replaced one, their idiot coach seems to think it is acceptable to compare himself to Hitler and fans may got stuck with paying for PSL's in the new stadium.
