Dan Dickinson let us know some interesting news from the world of anime. An upcoming Japanese anime series, RED GARDEN, will be set on Roosevelt Island. Apparently it's about kids who go to a high school on Roosevelt Island - and we guess hijinks will occur (we have a very poor understanding of Katakana - if someone who knows Japanese better wants to translate, we'd love that) - maybe they will involve stuck trams. As far as we knew, there is no real high school on Roosevelt Island - just PS/IS 217 which goes through the 8th grade (Roosevelt Island high schoolers go to Manhattan or Queens).
Coming Soon: Anime Roosevelt Island!

Explore Roosevelt Island
Cool stuff: The 92nd Street Y/ Makor has a Roosevelt Island Hike this Sunday. As per the 92nd Street Blog, Roosevelt Island is more than just the decaying old hospital, the Island once had the "city’s main prison, a smallpox hospital, a disease research laboratory, an insane asylum, a fort and a lighthouse." There are some new development planned for Roosevelt Island (great midtown views!) but the movie Dark Water took the depressing approach to living there.
Inquiry at Roosevelt Island
Roosevelt Island, pop. 10,000, is in the news again. The small town in the middle of the big city, one of the great urban planning "eh-steps" (not quite a misstep, but close), was last seen in the news scaring Jennifer Connely in "Dark Water." But now its got a political scandal, or the makings of one, to call its very own.
Roosevelt Island Gets the Star Treatment in Dark Water
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Batman Begins is awesome and War of the Worlds is better than expected. But if you want to experience a part of New York City many don't usually get to and want to feel appreciate your apartment (go Schadenfreude!), Gothamist recommends Dark Water. We had been curious about this film for a while, and though we fare poorly at even slightly scary films, we were too tempted by seeing how Walter Salles would film this forgotten part of the city.
The Dark Water Trailer
Gothamist saw the trailer for the new Jennifer Connelly movie, Dark Water. Basically, she finds an apartment (with the help of John C. Reilly, a fellow tenant) in what looks like one of those huge NYC apartment buildings that are so big and nondescript, they look like projects, and moves in with her daughter, even though the elevator is freaky. She proclaims it perfect, but, of course, that's when the scary stuff happens: Leaky ceiling that reveals a flooded apartment above her - that hasn't occupied! Read the description at Yahoo Movies, and see the trailer at the Touchstone site. What Gothamist wants to know is hasn't she seen Panic Room? Or even Duplex? Buying a living space in NYC is never charmed - especially not when you're in a movie written by the same guy who wrote The Ring. Gothamist chortled our way through the trailer, but we might see it - IMDB says it filmed at Roosevelt Island and there seem to be some cool aerials of the city.
