-Rangers 4 Devils 2: Maybe all the Rangers’ defense needed was the return of Darius Kasparaitis. Benched since the start of the season for conditioning issues, Darius was put back into the lineup on his 34th birthday and played a solid game in the New York victory.
This is a game that may come back to haunt the Rangers later in the season. Facing Buffalo, which was two points behind them in the conference standings, the Rangers came out flat and played a sloppy game falling 2-1 to the Sabres. The news was not all good for Buffalo’ which lost their leading scorer, Tim Connolly’ to a knee injury after a hit by Darius Kasparaitis that some felt was a dirty play.
In the mid-90’s it was the best local rivalry we had. Both teams were among the NHL elite and ferociously battled each other whenever they met. Then the Rangers fell on hard times and the Devils kept wining. Last night the two teams squared off at the Garden and when it was over New York had beaten New Jersey 3-1 and snapped their nine-game winning streak.
