Shanghaiist's Dan Washburn was in town for a day with his fiance, Bliss, and we met up with them for some breakfast at Cafe Gitane. Afterwards, he said he wanted to get a shave and a haircut, so we sent him over to our favorite Italian barbershop, the Hair Box on Spring Street (off Sullivan). We've been going there for years-- a haircut is $14, and a shave runs about $12. We're talking an old school shave here-- straight razor, stunning closeness, no nicks. The best thing to do is get the hair cut and shave combo-- it comes with a hot towel, and takes about thirty minutes. Despite the improbable (and slightly perverted?) name and modernist plastic interior, the Hair Box is the real deal-- an old New York City barbershop with one of those striped poles outside. Check it out today.
