Yikes: The Buffalo Police Department released this video of an 18-year-old man being struck by a hit-and-run driver, and it's pretty intense. It shows Victor Jerez and two other men walking in the street; they see a car coming, so they rush to the sidewalk. But the driver comes barreling onto the sidewalk, hitting Jerez and sending him flipping through the air.

Proposed Law: Catch Drivers Going 5 MPH Over Speed Limit
Did you know that a Staten Island Assemblyman co-sponsored legislation that would have cameras capture drivers who go 5 miles over the speed limit? According to the State Island Advance, "Violators convicted of traveling between five and 10 miles per hour more than the posted speed limit will be charged a $50 fine. Driving between 10 and 30 mph above the limit will result in a $75 fine that doubles to $150 for speeders who exceed 30 mph."
"Vicious" Pit Bull That Mauled LI Woman's Face On The Loose
A 62-year-old woman was seriously injured by two pit bulls yesterday on Long Island, and police are now warning locals to stay inside. Victim Sashi Sharma was bitten by the dogs on her face, head, legs and arms, mangling her left arm badly. She was able to call 911 and scream that she was being mauled; police shot and killed one of the dogs, while the other escaped. "This dog is vicious," warned Detective Lt. Kevin Smith of Nassau County Police.
Politicians Worry About Paladino's "Violent" Talk
Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino is famously straight-talking. But does that make him dangerous? Well, yes, according to former Senator Alfonse D'Amato (R) who told WCBS 880, “He is dangerous, at the least, he is mean spirited and he tries to divide people."
More Danger Lurking At Brooklyn Bridge Park

Report: Nearly Three Traffic Violations Per Minute At Busy Intersections
After studying four intersections for 38 hours, Transportation Alternatives, the bicycling, walking and public transit advocacy group, has released a report with suggestions for the NYPD on reducing "the most dangerous driving behaviors." Some of the findings: "Traffic law violations occur three times every minute (157 times an hour) per intersection" and "On average, each intersection had 24 Failure to Yield violations per hour. Failure to Yield is the second most frequent human factor in causing motor vehicle crashes."
Two Arrested in Violent Greenwich Village Muggings
Police say they've arrested two men in connection with a recent crime spree in the West Village, which left one woman with a broken jaw and other residents of the quaint neighborhood feeling terrorized. An NYPD source tells the Post that Adam Temple, 21, of Hampton Place in Brooklyn, and Anthony Lindsay, 30, of Park Place in Brooklyn, were arrested late last night. The two are suspected of perpetrating violent muggings which targeted mostly white women; in each incident the victim was approached from behind by two males, hit and then mugged. Last week City Council Speaker Christine Quinn sent an email to residents warning them to remain alert and to beware of "strangers asking for directions."
Assaults, Muggings On the Rise West Village
Maybe not anymore; the unidentified victim says that when she noticed her two assailants walking toward her down the block, even "from a distance, I felt like they didn't belong. I had a strange feeling." She believes one of the men had a gun. "They pushed me to the ground... I crumbled pretty easily because I thought it was a gun... I started screaming, 'I don't know what you want. I'll give you whatever you want. They continued to punch me.'" Thankfully, she was able to get her hands on her mace and sprayed the thugs in the face. They made off with her earrings, and she got taken to St. Vincent's with a broken jaw.
Queens Blvd Bike Lane? Cyclists Say Yes, DOT Says No
A team of twenty brave (or crazy) cyclists recently took part in a nighttime group ride along Queens Boulevard, that twelve-lane traffic artery affectionately known as the Boulevard of Death. Wearing reflective vests with "Share the Road" printed on the back, the so-called "bike pool" gathers monthly to remind drivers that cyclists also use the dangerous boulevard, where 22-year-old Asif Rahman, a photographer and aspiring hip-hop artist, was killed by a truck earlier this year. The Times tagged along with the cyclists, who are calling for a bike lane on the boulevard. Queens Councilman James Gennaro agrees it could accommodate one with minimal impact on traffic, but the DOT has no plans to install it. As Alex Vasiliev, a 66-year-old Ukranian livery cab driver puts it, "Bicycles need a lane, but cars do not need bicycle lane."
Smokin'-Hot Grass in City Parks Could Get You Burned
The artificial turf being used to replace natural grass in NYC parks has been pointed out as a source of unhealthful emissions, but it's also just plain hot. The Daily News dispatched reporters with thermometers to five City parks with artificial grass and found that urban athletes had more to fear than ill-fitting footwear when it comes to blistered feet.
Over two mildly warm days last month, The News took surface temperature readings at five synthetic fields across the city accompanied by NYC Park Advocates, a group that has been critical of the fake grass.more ›
Pit Bull Helps Scare Off Potential Attacker
Following a string of horrific attacks by pit bulls on civilians, one pit bull has actually turned hero. In an incident that occurred early Thursday morning, a stranger punched his way through the half-gated window of a young woman's bedroom in Rockland County--across the Hudson River and a few miles north from NYC. The assailant, apparently intent on raping the woman, climbed onto her bed and proceeded to punch her in the face several times.
Some Rides at Coney Island Unsafe, Inspector Says
An amusement park ride inspector warns that some of the rides at Coney Island are so dangerous they should not be open for business. Last summer a man died after surgery to heal vertebrae fractured on the Cyclone, but the rides now targeted by “amusement-safety consultant” Walt Reiss don’t include the famous wooden roller coaster.
