Tom Hanks In Talks To Play Daily News Legend On Broadway In 2013

In 2010, the NY Post was up in arms over the possibility of Wolverine playing Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and columnist Mike McAlary on Broadway—while Hugh Jackman may possess "the most intense swishing" ever seen on the Great White Way, they scoffed at the notion of him being able to play a heavy-drinking man with hair on his chest. But it seems the play has traded up—the Post reports that Tom Hanks is now in negotiations to make his Broadway debut in 2013 by playing McAlary in a new play by Nora Ephron. more ›

Daily News' Mike Lupica Explains Why BFF Ray Kelly Should Run For Mayor

It's no secret that Mike Lupica has scrawled his name and Ray Kelly's into a heart onto the ole' sycamore on the Daily News' playground, and today the columnist tells us all why Kelly would make such a fantastic mayor of New York City. "Some of the people polled say Kelly doesn’t know enough about issues beyond crime or terrorism," Lupica writes, "But there happens to be a good reason for that: Kelly has spent the last decade fighting crime and terrorism in his current job." So, that means we should give him a pass on the whole, "no other experience other than fighting crime or terrorism" thing? more ›

Fake Weed Terrifies Reporters! Senators! Lazy Parents!

Synthetic weed's demonization in the media continues—harsh! Already despised by Senator Schumer and blamed for everything from teen suicides to hospital visits, the totally legal "incense" today gets the front page treatment from the Daily News in a "STORY EVERY PARENT SHOULD READ." Oh noes! Just one puff and your spawn will turn into the (fictional) narrator in Go Ask Alice. more ›

Juice-Slinging New Jersey Nudie Bar As Sad As It Sounds

Juice-Slinging New Jersey Nudie Bar As Sad As It Sounds

Beating out a forlorn Frutopia machine in an Idaho parking lot and an abandoned lemonade stand in Florida, an all-nude strip club in Sayreville, New Jersey that only sells non-alcoholic beverages is officially the World's Saddest Juice Vendor. Club 35, which doesn't sell booze so its dancers can remain completely nude, recently lost a NIMBY court decision that would shut it down. Their lawyer vows to appeal, and the Daily News gets the money quote on the spot's possible closing from "a man in a mechanic's uniform." "I work so many hours it's hard to meet people. Without this I would be lonely." more ›

In response, New York Times Company Vice President and Assistant General Counsel George Freeman has written a letter to NYPD spokesman Paul Browne condemning the actions of the police and requesting an "immediate meeting" with Browne and Commissioner Ray Kelly. It is signed by representatives from the New York Post, the Daily News, NBC, the Associated Press, and Dow Jones among others. more ›

Daily News Calls Out Two Impostor Daily News Journalists At Occupy Wall Street

After an initial period of indifference, the media—both professional and amateur—have swarmed Zuccotti Park to cover the Occupy Wall Street protests. Most are sincere, while a few show up with the goal of poking fun at the demonstrators. But yesterday two men brandishing a video camera and a microphone approached attendees in the park for interviews, telling them they were with The New York Daily News. A Daily News employee snapped their photo and confronted the impostors. more ›

NYPD Orders Photo Of Cop Responsible For Ticket-Fixing Probe Removed From Website

After the police officer who was at the genesis of the NYPD's ticket-fixing probe—who had his picture posted online, started receiving death threats—authorities have taken notice. According to the Daily News, Internal Affairs detective Randy Katakofsky's picture was posted on Thee Rant, a message board for current and former NYPD officers, and at least one user thought Katakofsky should kill himself. The department then asked the website to remove the photos and messages, and met with Katakofsky to ensure his safety. Currently, there's a "What Happened to the Det Katastropy Thread?" on the site. more ›

Daily News Reporter: Kids, MTA Fare-Beating Will Ruin Your Life

Al Capone. Jeff Dahmer. Ted Kaczynski. All subway fare-beaters.* Put aside the fact that jumping the turnstiles is cheaper even if you're caught, and that folks from all walks of life pass through an open emergency exit every now and then. Cheating the MTA is a gateway to a life of inequity and sorrow, or so implies the Daily News' Pete Donahue, who interviewed a 17-year-old freeloader. more ›

The photographers, David Handschuh, Todd Maisel, Debbie Egan-Chin, Andrew Savullich, Susan Watts, and Ken Murray, offer their memories of the day—from the chaos to the unnerving silence after the buildings collapsed—with their photographs, many of which are extremely graphic (Handschuh remembers how people started jumping, Maisel describes body parts falling from the sky). more ›

Daily News Offers Bull Poop Wall Street Front Page

After the NY Post compared the stock market's volatility to a hooker's panties on its front page, the Daily News is now wading into the muck. Literally, with a photograph of the Bowling Green bull statue's butt next to a worker sweeping the ground and the word "CRAPS!" underneath. Well, the Dow did fall 519 points yesterday... but couldn't the News have just Photoshopped the bull's balls blue? more ›

Graffiti Artist Tells Us Crackdown On Subway Graffiti Doesn't Mean A Thing

Graffiti Artist Tells Us Crackdown On Subway Graffiti Doesn't Mean A Thing

Today, the Daily News, in typical anti-street art fashion, published a story declaring a "crackdown on train graffiti vandals paying off, thanks to team of ex-cops." They patriotically applaud the dedicated NYC Transit Eagle Team for fending off the "old-school graffiti vandals" (who they believe can open the door to "bad guys intending to do much worse"). But one of these old-school graffiti vandals told us the whole thing is a bunch of baloney. more ›

The Dark Side Of Bingo

Earlier this year we got nostalgic for the game of bingo and found some spots where we could play across the city. But little did we know that the game had a dark side. Today, the Daily News explores the seamy underbelly of bingo, where "younger, often unemployed" players are gambling away their life savings in order to make ends meet! more ›

Parks Dept Shamed Into Ruining Fun At Coney Island Pier

Parks Dept Shamed Into Ruining Fun At Coney Island Pier

After the Post shamed the Parks Department into resupplying Coney Island's toilet paper coffers, the Daily News seems to have had the same effect when it reported on Monday that kids were "risking their lives" by diving off the Steeplechase Pier at Coney Island. Reporter Michael Daly details the pier's transformation from a dock of impunity to "a border crossing in cold-war Berlin" in the span of a single day. "A dozen uniformed sentries and an emergency vehicle" were on site to keep the pier off-limits to everyone but fisherman. One 47-year-old man whose efforts to relax on the pier were rebuffed, said he remembered diving off the pier when he was 12, "the same summer he was introduced to the ways of love." Great, give them another reason to dive off the pier. more ›

NY Post Rumored To Raise Price Of Priceless Newspaper

The price of perfection is about to be raised ever so higher: according to Adweek, the NY Post is raising the newsstand price of the paper a quarter, to 75 cents, next Monday. The secret initiative came with its own mandate from the higher-ups to put out better stories to offset the change in price: “The boss himself has put the order out that [the paper] will be even greater than usual. He’ll be looking for what is there and what is lacking. So, please, pull some good ones out of your bags of tricks,” said one memo to the reporters. more ›

Reporter Witnesses Bloody Rikers Visitor Beatdown

Reporter Witnesses Bloody Rikers Visitor Beatdown

Witnesses claim that a corrections officer got into a shouting match with a visitor at Rikers Island yesterday, then beat him to a pulp and arrested him. Which leads us to one simple rule for guards: if you feel that you absolutely must assault a visitor at Rikers, try not to do it in front of a Daily News reporter. more ›

Untrustworthy Principal: Textbooks Are The "Soup De Jour"

Untrustworthy Principal: Textbooks Are The "Soup De Jour"

There's a certain type of bitter nerd who takes extreme pleasure in proving that they are smarter than their teachers. Based on an article today where they lace into a principal with terrible grammar, we take it that the Daily News was one of those nerds. Not that they don't have a point however: Principal Andrew Buck of the Middle School for Art and Philosophy wrote an incoherent, rambling mess of an email to staff, defending his policy of not providing textbooks. But, who the hell expects coherency from an art and philosophy manager! more ›

Daily News Got Scoop When Cuomo Aide "Accidentally" Called

Daily News Got Scoop When Cuomo Aide "Accidentally" Called

New York Magazine has a critical look at Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo's campaign—basically, how Cuomo isn't doing much campaigning at all and letting Republican candidate Carl Paladino's gaffes do all the work for him. And there's an interesting explanation on how the Daily News got that quote from Cuomo—after being mocked by Paladino, he asked his staff, "If a guy says you have no cojones, how do you punch him back, call him an a--hole?" It turns out one of Cuomo's aides called a Daily News reporter. more ›

Daily News Reporters Find Stealing Buses So Easy

And in the case of Trailways buses, well, the keys are waiting for you! more ›

Now you can see a video ("this documentary or something," according to Stiller) of that trip below, including Stiller reminiscing in the back of a car, and the surprising (and sweet) meeting with the home's owners. more ›

Daily News Editor Martin Dunn Steps Down

New York Daily News editor-in-chief Martin Dunn announced he is stepping down today. He told Media Decoder (which characterized the news as "unexpected") that he will be spending time with his family and taking care of his wife, who has cancer, "She has an illness that is going to take us many months to get over, and I want to spend as much time as I can with her. The demands of running a tabloid newspaper in a city with a tabloid war are enormous. And if you can’t spend every ounce of energy doing that then unfortunately you don’t feel as though the paper is getting the best of you." more ›

Rush & Molloy Retire Gossip Column

The Daily News' longtime husband-and-wife gossip team, George Rush and Joanna Malloy, are ending their column today and say good-bye, "Among the people who may not mourn the column's passing are Alex Rodriguez (we wrote about his alleged affair with Manhattan madam Kristin Davis), CNN's Jeffrey Toobin and Citigroup's Richard Parsons (we discovered they'd both fathered love children), Tiger Woods (we revealed mistress Cori Rist and a pair of ladies who allegedly tried to shake him down after a three-way) and Bernie Madoff (whose wife, Ruth, reportedly learned of his extramarital affairs here)," adding, "Thanks to all you tipsters, snitches, snoops and spywitnesses. You know who you are." Former Page Six gossip Frank DiGiacomo will head the News' Gatecrasher column this summer. more ›

Sassy! more ›

Mort Zuckerman Is Too Busy To Run For Senate

One day after former Tennessee Congressman Harold Ford Jr. announced he wouldn't run for Senate, real estate billionaire and Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman also bailed out of the race. Unlike Ford, who claims he quit to avoid an ugly primary, the 72-year-old said he won't run because he's too busy with family and business obligations: "[I]t is very difficult to see how I can devote the necessary time to either a campaign, or to working in Washington, if I were to win." more ›
