Still No "Lone Wolf" Terrorist Indictment, Lawyers Talking Plea Deal

Still No "Lone Wolf" Terrorist Indictment, Lawyers Talking Plea Deal

Remember Jose Pimentel, the "lone wolf" terrorist the NYPD arrested last year after a tip from a questionable informant? The one whose first lawyer said he was entrapped and whose case the FBI absolutely, to the NYPD's embarrassment, wanted nothing to do with? Well, the Manhattan's DA office is reportedly working on a plea deal for the "stoned squirrel" as you read this, despite the fact they haven't actually indicted him yet. more ›

DA: Mortgage Fraudster Paid Hitman To Kill Pesky Witness

Aaron Hand, already in jail for 8 1/3 to 25 years for his role in a fraudulent $100 million mortgage scheme, is now facing 25 years to life for allegedly trying to hire a hitman to whack a witness who testified against him. Hand's big problem? Like so many hit men these days, the one Hand tried to hire was actually an undercover investigator from the DA's office wearing a wire. The office had been tipped off that Hand wanted somebody dealt with. more ›

Ten Arrested In Chinatown Illegal Rat Poison Sting

6,000 packages of an extremely lethal chemical being sold in Manhattan's Chinatown as rat poison have been seized, and ten retailers have been arrested on state and federal charges. Authorities from the EPA, the city's DA's office, and the state's Department of Environmental Conservation confiscated vials and boxes of brodifacoum, an anticoagulant 61 times stronger than is legal, with the label "The Cat Be Unemployed." A woman who purchased them in the East Broadway Mall last year mistook it for medicine, and lost two-thirds of her blood volume! more ›

DSK Accuser's Meeting With DA's Office Lasted 30 Seconds, Dismissal Was About Credibility

As Dominique Strauss-Kahn prepares to appear in court today for the expected dismissal of criminal sexual assault charges against him, yesterday's meeting between prosecutors and his accuser Nafissatou Diallo was reportedly a curt one. "Nafi, we're going to dismiss the case. You have lied to us repeatedly. We can't win," assistant district attorney Joan Illuzi-Orbon apparently said, according to Diallo's attorney Kenneth Thompson. The meeting "lasted no more than 30 seconds," Thompson tells the Times. more ›

DSK's Accuser To Meet With Prosecutors As Charges Appear To Crumble

Dominique-Strauss Kahn's accuser, Nafissatou Diallo, will meet with Manhattan prosecutors on Monday afternoon for what her attorney describes as a conference "to announce that they're dismissing the case entirely, or some of the charges." Diallo's attorney, Kenneth Thompson, who has been waging a media campaign with his client to pressure Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance to move forward with the sexual assault case, tells the Times, "If they were not going to dismiss the charges, there could be no need to meet with her." Strauss-Kahn is due in court on Tuesday. more ›

Hotel Maid's Lawyer: She'll Sue Dominique Strauss-Kahn

Yesterday, the hotel maid who is accusing former IMF head Dominque Strauss-Kahn of attempted rape and forcing her to perform oral sex met with the Manhattan DA's office to discuss the case. While the Manhattan DA's office believes its case against Strauss-Kahn is on shaky ground enough to agree that he should be free on bail, a lawyer for Nafissatou Diallo the DA's office misinterpreted a recording that supposedly implied Diallo may have been trying to shake down the powerful Frenchman. And not only that, Diallo will also sue Strauss-Kahn. more ›

DSK Accuser Speaks On Camera: "I Never Want To Be In Public, But I Have No Choice"

After remaining anonymous (except in the French press) for nearly two months, the former hotel maid accusing Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault gave a televised interview, just released today, to ABC news. In many ways it paralleled the 3-hour interview she recently granted with Newsweek; speaking of the incident at the Sofitel in May, 32-year-old Nafissatou Diallo uses forceful hand gestures to describe Strauss-Kahn's alleged behavior, and offers a vivid account of her fear in the face of her attacker. more ›

DSK's Accuser Goes Public, Wants Him In Jail, "I'm Telling The Truth"

The hotel maid and Guinean immigrant who is accusing former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault has revealed herself in dual interviews: In a bid to counter suggestions that she was lying and tabloid speculation that she's a "hooker", 32-year-old Nafissatou "Nafi" Diallo spoke to Newsweek about her ordeal in a three-hour session at her attorney's offices in Midtown. "Because of him they call me a prostitute," she says, "I want him to go to jail. I want him to know there are some places you cannot use your power, you cannot use your money." And in an interview with ABC News, Diallo says, "God is my witness I'm telling the truth. From my heart. God knows that." more ›

Alan Dershowitz Wants Video Of His Sister-In-Law's Cycling Death, Please

Famed defense attorney Alan Dershowitz is getting fed up with the Manhattan DA's office. He understands that charges will likely not be placed against the U.S. Postal Service driver who hit and killed his sister-in-law, lawyer and a retired court-appointed referee Marilyn Dershowitz, and that is okay. But he also knows there is a video in existence that may help his family discover who was driving the other vehicle involved in the accident—and he says the DA's office is stopping him at every pass. more ›

Manhattan DA Cy Vance Reminds Us: Cy Vance "Did The Right Thing"

Manhattan DA Cy Vance Reminds Us: Cy Vance "Did The Right Thing"

It appears that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. is gently reminding his constituency why they elected him. The timing—when his office is under scrutiny after the "Rape Cop" verdicts, the Deutsche Bank fire acquittals, the departure of the sex crimes unit chief, and the disintegrating rape charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn—is anyone's guess. But we received an email from Cyrus Vance Jr. earlier today with the subject line "Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance in the news." more ›

Why Cy: Things Get Worse For Manhattan DA's Office

Five weeks ago, a jury found two police officers not guilty of raping an intoxicated woman. Earlier this week, two men on trial for manslaughter for the deaths of two firefighters at the former Deutsche were acquitted. And on Friday, prosecutors admitted that there were credibility issues with the woman who accused international political figure Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault. Defense lawyer Gerald Shargel said of Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance, "I have enormous respect for Cy as a prosecutor, but this is like a series of bad dreams." more ›

Goldman Sachs Subpoenaed By Manhattan DA

Goldman Sachs Subpoenaed By Manhattan DA

After the disappointing setback to the Manhattan DA's office that was last month's alleged rape cop verdict, Cy Vance has set his sights on a much bigger target: the "vampire squid sucking the face of humanity" that is Goldman Sachs. The District Attorney's office today subpoenaed the firm in relation to a recent report from Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. And while some analysts don't think the subpoena will lead anywhere, a source tells the Daily News the office is "very serious" about the case and is "throwing resources at it." more ›

Harlem Street Gang Members Get Hauled Into Court

Harlem Street Gang Members Get Hauled Into Court

Manhattan DA Cy Vance wants you to know he is tough on crime. So tough, in fact, that today he personally went before a judge to read the charges his office is bringing forth against 14 members of the "137th Street Crew," an alleged Harlem gang. "This isn't just about a threat to safety and our streets," Vance explained in a conference earlier today. The crew "targeted children and young teenagers to hold and transport firearms of individual gang members." more ›

Scamming Cabbie Wants To Clear His Name

Scamming Cabbie Wants To Clear His Name

One of the cabbies charged with over-charging his fares is settling in for a fight. Since the TLC didn't seem interested in his claims of a cabal of cabbies plotting to scam their passengers ("I met a series of drivers who decided to rob the public," he told them in September. "They were actually having meetings at my old garage."), Joseph Kastner is planning to fight the charges in court. more ›

Manhattan DA Cy Vance Rolls Up His Sleeves

Manhattan DA Cy Vance Rolls Up His Sleeves

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance is one of the most powerful prosecutors in the country, but yesterday he was in criminal court, trying to help his underlings get through a backlog of over 16,000 cases. According to the NY Times, "Such a backlog leads to significant delays: Last year, the average case in criminal court took 316 days to go from arraignment to completion, he said. The logjam also results in the dismissal of thousands of cases each year that fail to proceed to trial quickly enough. More than 4,800 such cases were dismissed last year in Manhattan, according to court records." more ›

Crane Company to Face Manslaughter Charges

Crane Company to Face Manslaughter Charges

Two years after a collapsing crane killed two workers on the Upper East Side, the crane company’s owner—in addition to an employee and the company itself—is expected to face charges of manslaughter. When two cranes came crashing down in 2008, the Manhattan DA launched an investigation of James Lomma that turned up evidence the machinery wasn’t properly repaired after being struck by lightning. "In answer to the question about how I feel about Jimmy Lomma being taken away in handcuffs, I say it's a start and about time,” said one of the workers' fathers. “It will never bring my son back...but it might finally be the beginning of paying real attention to the safety of workers who risk their lives to feed their families." more ›

DA Investigates Mysterious $750,000 Bloomberg Donation

Bloomberg made so many donations last year he can't even keep track of them all. Something shady is allegedly going on with one of them, a $750,000 contribution to the Independence Party, prompting Manhattan DA Cy Vance to investigate how the money was handled by a top aide and what exactly it was spent on. "We handed the money over to the Independence Party, and they have the full accounting, presumably, of how the money was spent," said Bloomberg's campaign lawyer Ken Gross. "The understanding was that the money was helping go to the party to pay for Election Day expenses such as poll watchers." more ›

Investor/Coke Fiend Accused of Defrauding Friends, Best Man

Friends and clients of real estate investor Adam Hochfelder thought they were buying shares in Lake George's Sagamore Resort and another property in Telluride, Colorado, but instead the money was going up Hochfelder's nose, among other places. The onetime-mogul—who underwent nasal reconstructive surgery because of his coke problem—says substance abuse led him to take over $2.5 million from investors and spend it on debts, private school for his kids, private jets, lawyer fees and expensive trips. He was arrested yesterday, and previously, in 2008, Hochfelder was charged with taking banks, family and friends for $17 million. “The facts of this case speak volumes about the defendant’s character,” the prosecutor said. “He did it with an outstanding level of arrogance and entitlement.” more ›

Cyclist Identified In Fatal Delancey Street Collision

Cyclist Identified In Fatal Delancey Street Collision

The bike rider who was run over by a school bus and killed on Delancey Street has been identified as 35-year-old Fuen Bai. The East Village resident reportedly crashed after hitting a pothole near the corner of Orchard Street and was backed over by the bus. In the days since the fatal collision — for which the driver wasn't charged — Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said his office would look into the incident. Cycling activists have put up a memorial for the biker, which reads:

Though we never met I mourn your passing. My heart broke at the news of the tragic loss of your life on this street. I too ride daily these dangerous streets, and had we met, would surely have had many stories to tell. I hope to see you in heaven and maybe share a ride with you there. I am sure the streets are in much better condition.

No Criminal Charges For Bus Driver Who Killed Cyclist

No Criminal Charges For Bus Driver Who Killed Cyclist

The bus driver who hit and killed a cyclistreportedly while driving in reverse — will not be charged, according to police. "I don't believe that anyone will be charged," an NYPD spokesman told Streetsblog. "The driver remained on the scene. Looks like it was just an accident." Considering that this is Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance's first week on the job, the transit website ponders whether or not this case will be indicative of his office's stance on vehicular crimes. The victim's name has not been released pending family notification. more ›

On New DA's Transition Team: Infamous Disbarred Lawyer!

After Cyrus Vance Jr. was elected to Manhattan DA, his campaign issued a press release noting a 30+ person transition team, made up of other lawyers, union leaders, and others. The Daily News notes the inclusion of Rev. Dr. C. Vernon Mason, best known for advising Tawana Brawley. Mason, who even ran against Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau in 1985, was eventually disbarred for "mistreating poor clients" in 1995; he's currently a deacon at the Abyssinian Baptist church and a NY Theological Seminary faculty member. Vance's team said, "C. Vernon Mason is a well-respected clergy member who cares deeply about his community and the criminal justice issues faced by youth and adults." more ›

Manhattan Finally Gets A New DA

Manhattan Finally Gets A New DA

Cyrus Vance Jr. was elected Manhattan District Attorney last night, giving the borough it's first new DA in 35 years. Of course, the reign of prolific Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau is only ending because the the 90-year-old decided to retire earlier this year (he will to help out with the family farm). Vance, who was Morgenthau's choice to succeed him, told WCBS 2, "I intend to be a strong advocate for public safety, as district attorney. I've spent my entire career working on criminal justice issues, and I'm ready for that challenge." He also recently promised, "Safety on our streets is going to be a very, very important issue for our office." more ›
