Maya Angelou, Cynthia Nixon Phoning NY Pols on Gay Marriage

"Helloooo, this is Dr. Maya Angelou calling. Tell me something: Would you deny your son or your daughter the ecstasy of finding someone to love?" This was the question posed by the Pulitzer prize-winning poet over the phone to State Senator Shirley Huntley, a Queens Democrat who opposes same-sex marriage. It wasn't a pre-recorded robocall; it was actually Angelou, and at first Huntley thought it was a joke, telling the Times, "I said, ‘What?’ I heard the voice, and I said: ‘My God. It is her.’ And that was that."

Cynthia Nixon to Wed in the City?

This past Sunday afternoon Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon was one of many to speak at the marriage equality rally. In front of the large crowd that held the likes of Bloomberg and Patterson, she even got personal, taking a moment to announce her engagement to girlfriend Christine Marinoni. According to the Daily News, the 43-year-old "flashed the diamond engagement ring Marinoni gave her and said, 'It's time already.'" The actress also noted that "In an ideal world, we'd like to in New York, when it becomes legalized. We’re not going to wait forever, but we’re hoping it’s just around the corner...Sometime I think before the end of next summer, but we don’t have a date.”

The season really gets underway this week so a lot of old favorites like The Simpsons, Heroes, and Boston Legal (along with some that shouldn’t be like The Batchelor) are back so you do know what to expect with them.

Swanson: Law & Order called my agent and said that they're doing the Anna Nicole Smith story. They knew I had just given birth a month before and asked, "How does she feel and how does she look?" My agent said, "Well, she's a little heavy, because she just had a baby," and they told him it would work for the story, because the character just had a baby, so she's up a few pounds, too. [Laughs] So after much discussion with [boyfriend] Lloyd, I decided to do the show...

Broadway's big night celebrated two hit shows, both with word "Boys" in the title. "Jersey Boys," the musical about singing group, The Four Seasons, won Best Musical and two actors won Best Actor (John Lloyd Young) and Best Featured Actor (Christian Hoff), and "The History Boys," a play about British education, won Best Play, Best Direction and Best Actor (Richard Griffiths). The speeches were all very heartfelt, touching and classy - Frances de la Tour, who won as Best Featured Actress in The History Boys, graciously thanked the crew and said she felt at home in "New York, New York." LaChanze won Best Actress in a Musical for The Color Purple, and thanked Oprah Winfrey at the very end. And Cynthia Nixon won Best Actress in a Play for The Rabbit Hole, and called herself a theater geek. The team behind The Drowsy Chaperone, the throwback to the 1920s musical, won a bunch of big awards, including Best Book and Best Score, with its Canadian creators thanking America.

We probably should have mentioned this to you before, but with all of the arts going on around town (Fringe to the left of us, Howl to the right!) it just slipped our minds. So here goes. We know you love free movies outdoors (who doesn't?) but most of the time the movies shown in series are of the 'oldie-but-goodie' variety, not that we're complaining considering the recent crop of movies. That is not the case, however, with the final night of the 3rd Annual Central Park Film Festival. What makes this series different from all those other series? All of the movies shown include scenes shot in the "most filmed public park in the world." And tonight the fest closes out with the New York premiere of "Little Manhattan."

The new hit off-Broadway production by the New Group of Hurlyburly is reportedly transfering to Broadway, we are especially glad that we had the chance a few nights ago to see it at the intimate Acorn Theatre at 42nd Street's Theatre Row complex.

At first, Gothamist was surprised such a little kid had her own potty, but apparently 18 months is an appropriate age to start potty training - which means having a potty around the house so the kid is comfortable around it. Who knew? And the FDNY said, "It's no embarrassment when it's an emergency. He [the father] called 911, and it turned out to be the best call he could make." Yes, Gothamist can't help but emphasize that - even when you're 28 and your head gets stuck on a plastic potty.

2004_09_emmycn.jpgAs the news of recent Emmy winner Cynthia Nixon having a girlfriend these past 10 months, after splitting up with her longtime partner and the father of her two children, Gothamist wants to chip in our two cents: We love you and want you to be happy, Cynthia. [We do have a caveat of "happy means not hurting people in a Michael Jackson-Courtney Love-Robert Blake kind of way."] Cynthia has been acting for a long time, and we're better for it. Gothamist has always identified with all of the Sex and the City girls at various points, but Miranda Hobbes has always been our kindred, take-no-bullcrap, tough, reactive, tough on the outside-soft as a marshamallow on the inside spirit.

We were stoked to read in Playbill that Academy Award-winning actress Holly Hunter (.

If it involves movies or television, Gothamist is interested. And if it's the tiniest bit related to the Oscars, then we're all over it. That's why Gothamist has produced a Golden Globes commentary similar to our Oscar commentary from last year. Yes, awards shows are self-congratulatory and ridiculous, and the Golden Globes are not a reliable predictor of the Oscars (which aren't that great anyway but their usefulness as a marketing tool cannot be denied), but it's just become a part of our DNA to enjoy an evening of watching, wondering, and whining.

The Daily News spends a day on set of Sex and the City - the day they happen to be filming at Soho House. The News is quick to point out that even though the girls are fabulous, "" Gawker, who has visited Soho House in less nefarious ways, has this tip about where else in the club SATC filmed.

Gothamist was walking by the American Museum of Natural History and noticed that the Rose Center was lit up. Then we remembered: It was where the screening and premiere party for Sex and the City was taking place.

Following up on stumbling across Sex and the City filming at the Trapeze School downtown, The Sun tells Gothamist that it was Sarah Jessica Parker (as Carrie) who was airborne, with Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall, and Kristin Davis on cheering her on.

For about the 10th or 20th time, it was suggested that I try speed dating, aka 3/6/8 minute dating, aka my greatest fear. Why a fear? I don't know if 8 minutes is enough for my charms to start working, let alone 3 minutes. But it might just be time to face the fear and try something like HurryDate. It'll make a good post, at least.
