As we mentioned last week, the first annual Meet the Breed event—featuring 160 purebred breeds of dogs and 41 purebred breeds of cats—was held at the Javits Center. And people weren't able to walk a foot without in any direction without saying, "Awwww." Enjoy these photographs by Katie Sokoler.

Time for an awwww break! Five peregrine falcon chicks were born atop the towers of MTA bridges! The MTA says that three were born at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, while the Throgs Neck and Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridges each welcomed one chick. Some details about the fuzzy birds, which are 3-4 weeks old (their talons are already the size of an adult human hand!), from the MTA:
To counteract the dreariness of the weather, we bring you exciting news about some of the Central Park Zoo's newest residents: Three baby lambs!
Start your "awww"s now: The Bronx Zoo released a photograph and video of one of its newest addition: A baby Matschie's tree kangaroo! The joey was actually born on July 4 last year, but since they are delivered in an embryonic state, they crawl back into their mothers' pouches for another 39-41 weeks. This little guy started exploring his home in the Jungleworld exhibit this week, with mom Arboroo nearby. In this video, you'll see him emerge from Arboroo's pouch!
A Sussex spaniel named Ch Clussexx Three D Grinchy took the top prize at the Westminster Kennel Club's 133rd dog show last night. Nicknamed "Stump," the 10-year-old canine's competition was a giant schnauzer (working group), a brussels griffin (toy), an Irish deerhound (hound), standard poodle (non-working), Scottish terrier (terrier) and a puli (herding). But he impressed Best in Show judge Sara Brewster Tietjen, who said, “He’s just everything that you’d want in the breed, and I couldn’t say no to him.”
As you know, the Westminster Kennel Club is holding their 133rd annual All-Breed Dog Show, but did you know that 2008 Best in Show winner, Uno, helped light up the Empire State Building in its honor? His little award-winning paw switched on the purple and yellow lights at 10 this morning. Now he's not only the first beagle to win Westminster, but also the first beagle to get this ESB honor. Oh Uno, what can't you do?
The Bronx Zoo animals have been frolicking in the city's first substantial snow. Here are some photos of the furry ones, including a few shots of the adorable snow leopards. (You're welcome.) In other Bronx Zoo news: José the beaver is back for the holidays, after a year-long hiatus; they say he's even "chomped down his own Christmas tree."
Like a scene out of My Dog Skip, a boxer and Shar-Pei mutt on Long Island named, ahem, Bentley drove his owner's van into a coffee shop last night. When 60-year-old Bryan Maher went into Cool Beanz in St. James to sign up for a slot on their open mic night, he left the engine running in order to keep the pooch warm. Perhaps thinking the D was for "Doggie," Bentley then put the car into drive and crashed it into the coffee house, cracking its window and breaking some of the furniture out front.
We don't know much about this Japanese cat, except that we love him (or her). You go, you crazy diet-something-box-loving cat! (Reminder: today is kitten and cat adoption day in Williamsburg.)
Today was the sort of day rain dates were made for. After getting washed out yesterday, Tompkins Square Park had plenty of autumn sunshine for what is claimed to be the country's largest dog costume parade. Thousands of dollars in prizes including six iPods were given away to the owners of the winning dogs.
The best part of Halloween is unequivocally being able to dress your pets up in costumes without being dubbed "crazy." This weekend some totally normal humans will be showing off their costumed canines in Brooklyn's Fort Greene Park at the 10th annual Great Pupkin Dog Costume Contest. Get there at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday if you want to register your pup, and shortly after if you want to be a spectator. Wonder how many John McCanine and Bark Obama outfits there will be!
We have wondered why people put their cats on leashes and it seems the only answer is "Why not?" Today, the NY Times' City Section confirms that answer, with a charming article about Corcoran broker Court Hassinger whose Abyssinian Radar enjoys constitutionals around the Upper West Side.
On a recent trip to Prospect Park, The City Birder saw more than just nesting birds. While walking home on Park Drive near the Meadowport Arch, he noticed a young squirrel walking directly into 3rd Street.
Another heartbreaking tale of animal abandonment reached our inbox this weekend, but this one could have a happy ending. Here's the story:
While walking my dogs this afternoon I found a cat with magical green eyes, a cat that looks to be a housecat, who has lived her entire life safe and cared for, suddenly now abandoned on the New York winter streets in her cat carrier with the door open left to die.Continue reading "Abandoned Cat Needs Home"
It may not be sweeps months, but WCBS 2 had a segment about a 12-week tiger cub who got a CT scan at a Long Island animal hospital. It's way easier on the eyes than the "woman who had a coat rack stuck in her face" story. Simba, a Siberian tiger at an Ohio zoo, was going to be put to sleep because she had a very bad sense of balance and could possibly...
A woman who used to volunteer at the BARC cat loft has a great tale of a kitten she met on the Queensboro Bridge one morning while running. His name is Jeff Bridges.Jeff Bridges is the kitten I found while I was running over the Queensboro Bridge Thursday morning. How the hell he got on the pedestrian walkway of the bridge–a long, long fall on the right, eight lanes of traffic on the left...
The Post has another article about Patrick Moberg and his flower-girl Camille Hayton today. What's new to report on the two-some since they are apparently, really, for real, turning off their spotlight now? Well, not much. The two shared the B train to Brooklyn after appearing on GMA yesterday and got some underground recognition (one straphanger hollered, "You are my favorite story this year."). Beating out an awww-struck ABC anchor Chris Cuomo as their most...
Sometime before 8 this morning, Patrick Moberg and Camille Hayton introduced themselves to Good Morning America viewers, Diane Sawyer and hopeless romantics everywhere. The Subway Cyrano met up with his mystery lady last night for dinner, where they said they "clicked." Hayton suggests the subway moment was serendipitous because she wouldn't have been on it (going to a friend's place) if her house hadn't just burned down. Moberg is compared to a Hollywood leading man,...
After making a big, illustrated statement on his website yesterday about not speaking another word about his underground love, too precious for the press -- Patrick Moberg talked to the New York Post. People read that newspaper Patrick! And word is the Blackbook employee who found her is going to be on Good Morning America tomorrow. Could Patraussie be next up to hit the small screen? (UPDATE: both are confirmed to be on GMA tomorrow!)...
Well, that didn't take very long. Turns out New York's Subway Cyrano, Patrick Moberg, has found his lady love. Or rather, Blackbook outed her as one of their very own interns. Patrick apparently got a tip from a friend of hers prior to that, and updated his website with a big 'ol "FOUND HER!" illustration. A little about the girl: she's an Aussie, her apartment burned down a few days ago, and she's currently on...
People are having mixed reactions to Patrick Moberg's simple quest in trying to find the girl of his dreams. It's really working some folks up that he's attempting to track her down through more creative ways than, say, Craigslist. Well, we approve, but we too were left wondering why oh why he didn't just speak up on the subway that fateful day, when she was right there before his very eyes. He explains: Do you...
With Craigslist becoming ever-increasingly creepy, this smitten young man has gone and purchased his own URL to find the girl he ogled on the subway last night. NYGirlOfMyDreams.com has a simple mission, it's "skinny, tall, not insane" creator would like to meet the the "fancy-braided, rosy-cheeked, journal writing" girl he saw on the the 5 train at 9:30pm last night. And if it doesn't work out, we're sure he has that URL for at...
