Chimp Shooter Tells Gruesome Tale; Explains PTSD Claim
A therapist told Officer Frank Chiafari to "politely decline" when asked to tell the awful story of the day Travis the chimp mauled Charla Nash in CT, ripping off her hands and face, but recently he made an exception. According to the officer—who's been denied Workers Comp for a PTSD claim after shooting the animal—it all started with a "humorous-sounding" call across the radio early last year. “[It] came over as ‘monkey attacking someone,’" he told the Times. But as he drove to scene he thought “Wait a minute, that’s Travis.” He'd met the "friendly" chimpanzee before: Travis's owners had a towing company and would sometimes bring him along when police called them to move vehicles. Chiafari pulled up he saw what looked like a pile of clothes. “Then I realized it’s a human being,” he said. “It was all ripped apart.” That's when Travis began bashing the window of his cruiser.
NY Businesses Eye Greener Pastures in NJ, CT
NYC businesses aren't the only ones threatening to leave for NJ—it turns out businesses all over the Empire State are threatening to leave for NJ and Connecticut! The NY Times looks at how NY is "Vulnerable to Poaching in Recession". While NJ and CT governments are offering nice deals, the Times adds, "some officials and business executives say the Paterson administration, reeling from a number of recent missteps, has been too poorly managed to respond effectively." One example: Pepsi, whose headquarters are in Purchase, was hoping that the Paterson administration wouldn't expand the bottle deposit requirements for non-carbonated drinks...only for Governor Paterson to expand the program and put a tax on non-diet sodas: "Now Pepsi is weighing a searing response: moving the headquarters of the Pepsi Bottling Group and more than 1,000 jobs, from Somers, in Westchester County, to Connecticut, which has been dangling a roughly $30 million incentive package."

The Post reports that owner Sondra Herold, 70, was having trouble containing her pet Travis: The Stamford police said that Herold "gave him Xanax in tea to quiet him, but the chimp grabbed the keys to open the kitchen door, went outside and started banging on car doors to indicate he wanted to go for a ride." So Herold called friend Charla Nash for help.
