Pop-Up Thanksgiving CSA Makes It Easier To Be A Holiday Food Snob

Fordham Cracks Down On Community Supported Agriculture

Fordham Cracks Down On Community Supported Agriculture

Fordham University Law student Michael Zimmerman seems like a real sweetheart. When he's not working on the roof garden he started atop of the St. Paul the Apostle Church parish house, he's organizing a C.S.A. (Community Supported Agriculture) group he founded. Besides bringing fresh produce to participating students and faculty, the C.S.A. also donated lots of extra vegetables and fruit to the local soup kitchen. But no good deed goes unpunished by the administrators of higher eduction—Fordham has effectively shut down Zimmerman's C.S.A., prohibiting it from operating on campus. more ›

Farmer's Market And CSA Start At Andaz Wall Street

The Andaz Wall Street hotel, which houses the excellent restaurant Wall & Water, as well as a fastidious cocktail lounge, is bringing back its outdoor farmer's market tomorrow. Operating every Saturday through November from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the market will feature items from local Hudson Valley farms, including fruits and vegetables from Migliorelli Farm, poultry and game from Quattro’s, jams and chutneys from Beth’s Farm Kitchen, cheese and other dairy products from Farm Catskills, and artisanal soaps and breads. And on top of all that, the Andaz is going to be the first hotel in New York City to sponsor a community supported agriculture farm (CSA), through a partnership with Down Home Acres in Ohio. more ›

Parks Dept. Confiscating Bikes Locked by West Side Bike Path

If you rode your bike over to Hudson River Park on Saturday, you might have returned to find it disappeared, depending on where you locked it. As you can see, Parks Department employees confiscated over a dozen bikes that were locked along the West Side bike path. We can't blame Obama for this one. Our source, who asked that we not reveal his name, tells us what he saw: more ›

Truck Farm Still Growing

Truck Farm Still Growing

The Truck Farm got some stready press during the summer months, and the Bed-Stuy blog just spotted it, still spurting out produce even though the days are getting shorter, darker and colder. They report back: "Looks like they had a hearty crop of tomatoes and peppers, along with a couple of other veg I could not immediately identify. I was tempted to pick, but I didn’t!" If one did want to pick at it, however, the Truck Farm is also a CSA of sorts—for just 20 bucks you can get your own little piece of the patch in the Dodge Ram. There's a video intro to the project after the jump, and more info at Wicked Delicate, who created the movable farm. more ›

Ryan Kuonen, Southside CSA

Ryan Kuonen, Southside CSA

While Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) groups are hardly a new development, the recent spotlight on "green" and "locavore" movements have helped CSAs soar to new heights of popularity and availability. One of this year's new CSAs on the block, Southside CSA in Brooklyn, has teamed up with Bridget and Bridge Vineyards to pair vegetable and fruit shares from Orange County with New York regional wine shares. We had a chance to catch up with one of the core members of the Southside CSA, Ryan Kuonen, to learn more about the group and its promise to bring fresh food from local fields to Brooklyn kitchens. more ›

Young Farmers, in Their Own Words, for the Greater Green

Often armed with not much more than unwieldy liberal arts degrees, the mass exodus of 20-somethings from urban areas to farms outside of the city was a much reported story last year; the underlying idea being that growing vegetables from seed to harvest might be more appealing than hitting up the mediabistro classifieds every two minutes during temp job downtime. more ›

A Bounty of Blueberries

A Bounty of Blueberries

Enjoy it folks -- blueberries are in peak season. Although technically they are in season from May to October, they've exploded recently. They're showing up in farmers' markets (here's a map of map of NYC Greenmarkets), CSA shares, and even the New York Times magazine's sunday recipes. more ›
