87-Year-Old Fatally Shot In Coney Island Crossfire

An elderly woman taking a walk outside her building was killed by a stray bullet yesterday afternoon in Brooklyn. Witnesses tell WCBS 2 that they saw 87-year-old Anna Surman "feeding cats in the courtyard at Surfside Gardens, where two of the buildings house seniors." The Daily News reports that Surman was hit around 4:50 p.m: "'Me shot, me shot. Someone shot me,' Surman screamed, recalled Neyla Andreyeva, 71, a neighbor. Bleeding heavily from a wound to her neck, Surman collapsed on the concrete and was taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where she died a short time later." Residents are upset with the growing violence, with one telling the NY1, "Another day out here I guess. There's been several shootings happening for the past week, three days out of the week. It's happened like almost everyday," while a community activist told WCBS 2, "We don't understand all the nonsense that is going on with the guns, but it really needs to come to a close." The police, who will be reviewing surveillance footage, seek two gunmen who were spotted fleeing the area.

Teen Caught In Sheepshead Bay Crossfire

Yesterday afternoon, a Brooklyn teenager was shot while entering her Brooklyn apartment building. According to the Daily News, the 17-year-old was "shot once in the back by a gunman aiming for another man...The thug was trying to shoot a young man running inside 3023 Avenue X, part of the Nostrand Houses, when the .22-caliber bullet struck the 17-year-old girl outside her first-floor apartment door." Friends say she was returning home from the store and that she is a student at Sheepshead Bay High School (which is across the street). Her injuries are not life-threatening. And, early on Sunday morning, a man fired into a crowd on a Bronx street; one person was injured and the shooter is still at large.

Yesterday afternoon, around 4 p.m., a 63-year-old woman was shot in the leg near 112th Street and Third Avenue. WABC 7 reports, "Police say the 63-year-old victim was shot once in the leg by a bullet intended for another target." While the victim did not have life-threatening injuries, unfortunately daylight shootings with bystanders caught in the crossfire are not uncommon: Last month, two 60-something women were shot when they stepped out of a building on St. Nicholas Avenue and West 113th.

The family of Carol Simon is grieving after she was killed while walking on Eastern Parkway near Bedford around 5:30PM on Saturday. Simon, a 35-year-old nurse's assistant, had been on her way to take her son to swimming lessons when an argument between two men became violent and one pulled out a gun.
