A 30-year-old woman was killed yesterday morning when a SUV driven by her boyfriend hit a guardrail and flipped on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn. According to police, Kareem Dupass, 34, was speeding when he lost control of the Ford Explorer near the Flatbush exit around 5 a.m. Amanda Marty died at Brookdale Hospital, and Dupass was charged with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, DWI, reckless driving and speeding. more ›

The 16-year-old driver who crashed into a car, tree, fence and house, killing a 13-year-old passenger will be charged as an adult. Eric Hakimisefat only had a junior license, which does not allow him to drive without an adult, when he was driving in the Midwood section of Brooklyn on Sunday. The owner of a building site at 791 Glenmore Avenue in Brooklyn was acquitted of manslaughter for the death of an Ecuadorean day laborer who died when a wall collapsed at the site in 2008. The NY Times reports that owner William Lattarulo "hired an architect to draw plans and an engineer to do periodic inspections. But rather than relying on a professional to complete the job, he chose to do it himself, and made an incorrect measurement that led to the collapse." Maximum Sentence Of Six Months For Driver Who Killed Man

The 19-year-old driver who hit and killed a 47-year-old man at a Staten Island bus stop pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide and will serve a maximum of six months in jail. Joseph Catrama admitted he ran a red light and was speeding when he turned from Seaview Avenue onto Capodanno Boulevard last February, lost control of his 2008 Hyundai Sonata, and pinned Nathan Pakow between the car's bumper and metal post displaying bus route information. According to the Advance, Catrama will be stripped of his drivers license and will face a minimum of five years probation. "This plea guarantees that the defendant is held accountable for his actions and avoids the uncertainty of a jury trial," said a spokesman for the Staten Island District Attorney's Office. more ›

Manslaughter Charge For 16-Year-Old Driver

The 16-year-old who fatally struck a man waiting for a bus in Bensonhurst was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and speeding, according to the Daily News. Stanislaw Zak, 65, had been on Bay Ridge Parkway and 18th Avenue when a Mazda driven by Dervish Nivokazi apparently came speeding down the road. Nivokazi first hit a Toyota and then hit Zak, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Nivokazi, who was treated for minor injuries and only had a junior license, was driving without a licensed driver—junior license holders are explicitly prohibited from driving after 9 p.m. in NYC. more ›

3 Charged in Binge-Drinking Hazing Death of Queens Teen

Three fraternity members have been charged with criminally negligent homicide after intensive hazing left a 19-year-old SUNY Geneseo student from Queens dead. Arman Partamian was found dead at a banned frat known as "The Pig House" after a three-day drinking binge. The accused Pig House members (ages 20 and 21 respectively) were seen ordering Partamian to drink more as he drunkenly jumped around a bonfire. An RA called 911 and reported, “The Pigs were forcing these individuals to drink entire bottles of alcohol around the fire, and they were, like falling over and vomiting and just, extreme, like hazing." In addition to the hazing accusations, one of the trio is facing charges for tampering after allegedly taking a fraternity jersey off of Partamian's unconscious body before cops arrived. The DA in the case said, "We've learned that many of the off-campus fraternities have been operating illegal drinking venues. They call them 'open parties,'...(They) pay $5 and get a cup and then drink without limitation." more ›
