The New York Times profiles James Powderly and Evan Roth today. The robotics engineer and Parsons grad formed the Graffiti Research Lab in 2005 as a design studio focused on developing methods of urban communication. One of their recent creations is an oversized tricycle equipped with a video camera, a digital projector, a laptop computer, and speakers. The setup can be used with a green laser pointer to project light graffiti onto different surfaces. "The idea is to put the tools for unfiltered, unsanctioned public expression in the hands of those who might otherwise shy away from grabbing a spray can or a paint marker."

Last night, Eyebeam held their Contagious Media Showdown, "a contest to create the most contagious new piece of viral media," with thousands of dollars of prizes on hand. Starting today, the entries are available for viewing and "voting" on the Showdown site. The winners are determined after three weeks by unique hits, highest Alexa ranking, most blog links, and most hits for a project using a Creative Commons license.
Creative Commons is a public domain content project that is launching in the next two weeks. Some people out there are trying to change this, before the super-powered media conglomerates pass laws making downloading mp3s punishable by death. Just like in Saudi Arabia.
