Crazy Eddie Electronics Stores Making Insane Comeback

A Brooklyn entrepreneur has purchased the trademark for Crazy Eddie, a Northeast electronics retail chain famous in the '80s for its irritating, low-budget ads, which featured DJ Jerry Carroll hyperventilating about the store's "insane" sales. (Watch below.) The company went bankrupt in 1989 after the U.S. Attorney in New Jersey busted brothers Eddie Antar and his nephew Sam for fraudulent business practices.

There will never be another advertising campaign, national or local, quite like the Crazy Eddie ads in the 1980s. And even though seeing them gives us a slight heart attack each time (and inspires us), this Christmas ad does seem to capture the frenzied spirit of the holidays. Everyone should have an oversized candy cane defend him- or herself against snowballs while claiming "We will not be undersold!"

Ooh, finally we move to the "Handwriting Analysis" portion of the Astor spat! There were accusations of her son Anthony Marshall making 104 year old Brooke Astor wear tattered nightgowns and sit on a couch reeking of dog pee and being cheap with her medical care. Then there was the odd sale of her favorite painting. And of course allegations that her estate was being mishandled.

Holy cow - the Daily News reports that the trademark and Internet domain for Crazy Eddie's is for sale. On eBay. And while the News notes its bid was at $16,100, it's now at $16,300. The company that owns the trademark and domain wants $800,000, which would be a truly insaaaane price. If you go to crazyeddie.com, you'll find out info about the auction, classic Crazy Eddie commercials, and the history of Crazy Eddie. And we had never seen that really long Saturday Night Fever-inspired commercial (Crazy Eddie Fever)! That was what has been missing from our life!

- One woman fell during the feeding frenzy, and shoppers just stepped over her. Another was crying. One petite lady stood on top of a chair so she could grab at a silk shirt that was too high, while throwing the rest of the batch down to her friends. A group of moms even brought a stroller along just to pile clothes in it. Gothamist only wishes that Stella or whichever high fashion designer H&M selects next (Nicholas Ghesquiere? Roland Mouret? Alexander McQueen?) do a Crazy Eddie style commercial, ending with "...and the prices are INSANE!"
