Two Rikers Island corrections officers have been charged with covering up a brutal assault on an inmate in 2009. 49-year-old Victor Rodman, who has been part of New York's Boldest for almost a quarter century, allegedly visited another guard, 43-year-old Michelle Hubert, in July of 2009 when a fight broke out between inmates. Investigators tell Newsday that Rodman broke an inmate's nose and caused permanent vision loss in one eye. "These defendants are charged in a disturbing inmate assault and cover-up, betraying their integrity and the city's trust in them," the city's Department of Investigation's commission Rose Gill Hearn said.

Goldsmith Feels Bad Bloomberg Is Getting Blamed For Supporting Him
Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg defiantly stood by his decision not to disclose that Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith resigned in early August because Goldsmith had been arrested for domestic violence a few days earlier in D.C. Bloomberg said, “I make no apologies for either the fact that Mr. Goldsmith has left city service, or for treating the Goldsmith family with basic decency as he left." Then Goldsmith spoke out later in the afternoon, releasing a statement to the NY Times, "As a former employee, I , not the mayor, should have more fully disclosed the reasons for my resignation. I thought the immediacy of my resignation mooted the need for further explanation. I was wrong. The lack of a fuller disclosure I now regret as I regret loss of my public service career and the intrusion my children have experienced... I regret the criticism of the mayor for his support of my family."
Bloomberg Not Sorry He Covered Up Ex-Deputy Mayor's Domestic Violence Arrest
Mayor Bloomberg made his first remarks about former Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith's resignation due to a domestic violence arrest in D.C.—and not his crappy Blizzageddon response, as most assumed. And in true Bloomberg fashion, those remarks were defiant...like kayaking-during-Hurricane Irene defiant. He told reporters this morning, "I make no apologies for either the fact that Mr. Goldsmith has left city government or for treating the Goldsmith's family with basic decency."
UFOs Are From Mars, Cover-Ups Are From Mount Vernon
You've got to hand it to the Men in Black; within 48 hours after an alien spacecraft's confirmed broad-daylight contact with New York City, the lamestream media has swiftly regurgitated the government's cover-up story, and the local tabloids are pushing an official explanation that the wondrous spaceship was merely a cluster of balloons. Yesterday we were told that the ship was actually balloons released from a publicity event in Times Square; now we're supposed to believe that it was a bunch of balloons from an engagement party in Mount Vernon. And they've even gotten an entire elementary school to play along!
Report: NYPD Covered Up Rookie Cops' Assault On Cabbie
It sometimes seems like no good deed goes unpunished when it comes to the NYPD: Officer Adrian Schoolcraft was hounded and discredited for coming forward about quotas in the force, and several off-duty cops have gotten away with drunk driving cover-ups. Today the Village Voice reports on another such cover-up, which took the reputation and dignity away from one diligent police officer.
Ex-Boyfriend Pleads Guilty To Killing NYPD Criminologist
Queens DA Richard Brown announced that the ex-boyfriend of a NYPD criminologist who was found dead in her Sunnyside apartment last year pleaded guilty to her murder. Gary McGurk, 24, told a judge yesterday, "I struck the victim Michelle Lee in the head with a hammer" four times, and, when asked what his relationship was with her, he answered, "Long-time friends, you honor."
After Years Of Denial, LI Man Admits He Killed Wife
Two years ago, William Walsh hung posters and made tearful pleas for help in finding his missing wife Leah. Now, after claims that his confession was coerced, he has pleaded guilty to her murder: In court yesterday, Walsh told a judge that he strangled her in a rage as they were arguing about a affair he was having, saying, "I put her in a chokehold. I covered up my actions after the fact. I wish I hadn't done any of it. I am truly sorry."
Family Claims NYPD Cover-Up In Bar Brawl Shooting
The family of a man killed by cops during a Cypress Hills bar brawl are alleging a police coverup. The brother of a man was shot and killed by undercover cops is demanding that the NYPD release surveillance video that allegedly shows the 43-year-old Kevin White pointing a gun at officers moments before his death.
Accused DWI Cop Could Face 7 Years, Family Calls Cover-Up
Yesterday a grand jury voted to indict NYPD Officer Andrew Kelly on charges of second-degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated in an accident last month that killed a woman who was trying to hail a cab. If convicted, Kelly faces up to seven years in prison. Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes says that Kelly, 30, will also face trial on other charges, including speeding.
Year After Murder, Staten Islander Admits He Killed Ex
Yesterday, Thomas Paolino admitted to killing his ex-girlfriend—concocting a plan to cover it up in the process—and dumping her body in NJ's Pine Barrens. Paolino, a 20-year-old who lived in Staten Island's Tottenville section, has been in custody since being arrested in April 2008 for the murder of Jessica Tush. Though Tush and Paolino had broken up, police suspected that Paolino lured her into his car by offering to drive her to the site where a friend recently died in a car crash. After killing Tush, Paolino used her phone to text one of her friends with "A black man is following me." However, the friend was suspicious, because the text message addressed her by her full name, not a nickname. The Staten Island Advance says Paolino apparently agreed to a plea deal—23.5 years in prison— because of the weight of the evidence. Tush's mother said, "I'm not happy with the 23 and one-half years. He'll only be 39 years old when he can get out," but appreciated the work of NJ prosecutors. She added, "The outcome doesn't change for us. My daughter is dead, so it didn't matter whether we went to trial or not. I just didn't want to see him walking."
Signs Of Kings County Hospital Staff Cover-Up In Patient's Death
A year after a 49-year-old woman died in the psychiatric waiting room at Kings County Hospital, the Department of Investigations has issued a report that says, "Discrepancies were uncovered that called into question the accuracy of the medical records created by certain Kings County Hospital doctors." In other words, hospital staffers—doctors and nurses—falsified records and lied to investigators about the care that Esmin Green received.
"The Ultimate Pain a Family Can Endure"
Yesterday, the father of Leah Walsh, the woman killed and dumped off a Long Island highway, was too upset to speak at her funeral; the Daily News reports that Howard Hirschel asked Rabbi Abraham Eckstein to read his words, "This is the ultimate pain a family can endure. We've all heard the expression, 'Live one day at a time.' I'm trying to live one minute at a time... Although I know my children knew that I loved them dearly, I should have hugged them more. I say to all of you, if you have children, give them a big hug for Leah - and another for me."
William Walsh Also Being Kept in Solitary Confinement
There's something eerily similar about the cases of David Steeves and William Walsh, the two big murder stories that came out of Long Island this week. It should be a strange enough coincidence just in there being two high profile instances of men killing their wives in such close proximity. But add to that the fact that both men admitted their crimes to police only to then claim that the confessions were coerced and now reports today that both have been put into solitary as part of their incarceration. Authorities would not say why Walsh has been separated from the rest of the prison population, an action usually taken for medical, psychiatric or safety reasons. Newsday also reports that "at the Rockville Centre home of Leah Walsh's parents Friday, friends stopped by to express their condolences as the family gave candy to trick-or-treating children."
Police Say Walsh Was Spotted During Elaborate Cover-up of Wife's Murder
The Nassau County police revealed details in how William Walsh's story fell apart during questioning. Walsh, who had emotionally pleaded for his missing wife's return on Monday, was arrested for her murder on Wednesday.
