A group of 20 Long Island Costco workers claimed their $201.9 million Powerball jackpot yesterday in front of the store that most say they'll continue to work at. The 8 women and 12 men decided to accept their winnings in a $106 million lump sump, which is around $70 million after taxes, or $3.5 million apiece.

Man Offers Costco Deliveries To UWS, UES
Have you dreamed of buying 3-liter bottles of olive oil from Costco, but you can't because you're not a member and don't have a car? Well, City Room found a service run by Michael Eberstadt, who owns the Rack and Soul bbq restaruant, called BigBoxDeliveries which will bring bulk items to folks on the Upper East and Upper West Sides: "The customer and Mr. Eberstadt split the savings from shopping at a Costco. To make it worth his time, his share has to be a minimum of $40." He explains he doesn't have much overhead since he has a truck and points out, "There are certain things you need in bulk. That is what I am hoping to provide: cases of Gatorade, Tide." But he admits his wife, a white-collar defense attorney, "thought it was the stupidest thing she ever heard of."
Ex-Cop Sues Bumble Bee Tuna for $100K After Choking on Bone
A retired NYPD lieutenant is suing Bumble Tuna and Costco after choking on a bone that turned up in his tuna fish sandwich two years ago. In May 2007, Bob McKenna was eating lunch at home on Staten Island when an inch-and-a-quarter-long curved fishbone that was mixed into the tuna got lodged in his throat. He tells the Daily News, "I was choking on that bone for more than a minute. It felt like forever." After "nearly blacking out," McKenna managed to cough it up, but that was only the beginning of what court papers describe as "permanent and emotional pain and suffering."
Missing Burglar-Chasing Dog Found!
On Tuesday, Kola, a one-year-old pit bull mix, had successfully chased away a burglar who attempted to break into her family's New City, NY home. When her owners came home, they discovered a "window was broken" and "muddy footprints in the house." Nothing was taken but Kola, who was rescued from a dog-fighting ring and adopted by the Rosen family earlier this year, was missing! And the Rosens were especially worried since Kola has an infected leg and needs medication. Last night, the pup surfaced in NJ. Someone found her tied to a pole at a Costco and took her to a shelter, where Mitch Rosen ID'd her and took her home.
Is Costco Coming to the UWS?
Is Manhattan ready to buy in bulk? The NY Sun is reporting on a Costco store possibly moving in to Manhattan's Upper West Side, between 59th and 61st streets. Not everyone is embracing the idea, and local officials, labor unions and the community "may block the outlet from opening at a time when New York consumers could use the access to the lower prices available at the discount chain." One major point for the opposition is raised by City Council member Gale Brewer, who says, "I assume you need a car to go to Costco, and I thought we were promoting public transportation and bicycles and greening." Transporting the bulk items is one problem, but do most New Yorkers shopping for discount products in bulk even have room in their apartments for gigantic jars of pickles and vats of mayo? Probably not. The last attempt Costco made to move in, 8 years ago, was thwarted by the community.
Price of Rice Makes Shoppers Think Twice
The cost of rice has shot up dramatically in recent months, and some analysts say a domestic shortage is on the horizon. The price increase is part of an alarming trend that’s seen the cost of flour rise 13 percent, milk 10 percent, eggs 30 percent and soon – make sure you’re sitting down – beer 10-15 percent.
