[UPDATE BELOW] Over 40 bullets were fired last night in a Crown Heights shooting near the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Park Place, leaving three two people dead, injuring two NYPD officers, and putting a bloody exclamation point on a very violent Labor Day weekend. Police say career criminal Leroy Webster, 32, emerged from a Park Place building around 9 p.m. and opened fire on Eusi Johnson, 29, who was walking with his cousin. Johnson was fatally shot in the neck, and bystander Denise Gay was shot in the head as she sat on her stoop with her daughter. Gay, 56, died from her wounds. more ›

After police surveillance of two robbery suspects turned into a bloody gunfight, leaving four Jersey City police officers and one Port Authority police officer wounded and the two suspects dead, Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey noted that one of the suspects, Hassan Shakur, had a pump-action 12-gauge shotgun "a combat weapon. It's got a stock that's retractable. It had a strap on it where he had numerous shells on it. He was ready to battle." Comey added, "I don't know how many times a big city chief has to stand here and say we need help to stop these weapons from hitting the streets. This weapon is manufactured for no other reason than to hunt man. So we should stop being afraid of the NRA and start being afraid of our own rights." more ›

Earlier this morning, WPIX reports that "an armed black man and woman wearing long robes and black hoodies shot at officers for as of yet unknown reasons at 24 Reed Street in Jersey City." Four officers were wounded—"One of the officers was shot in the leg during the crossfire and another was injured due to shrapnel from a shattered window entering his body"—and authorities conducted a manhunt, with K-9 units and snipers. WPIX adds, "Unconfirmed reports state at around 6:45am the two suspects were 'neutralized,' which may mean they are in custody or dead. They were cornered in a building on the corner of Reed Street and Bergen Avenue, which was first searched and evacuated." The Post has some statements that subway shooting suspect Raul Nunez made after his arrest. Nunez, an illegal immigrant (previously deported for a drug conviction) caught illegally using a student Metrocard, wounded two cops (pictured) with one of their guns and fired at another police officer, who wounded him. Nunez said, "I knew they were cops. They were trying to arrest me. I saw the [officer's] gun, and I grabbed it and went wild. I should have kept shooting, but the other cop shot me and broke my leg." He added, "I wasn't thinking of what I'm doing. I was just trying to do for my kids. I'm illegal." Yesterday, the NY Times pointed out that 400 of the 7,000 people arrested for fare beating have arrest warrants on them. more ›

Lieutenant Gary Abrahall, who wounded a man who shot two police officers and fired upon him on Tuesday, said he wasn't a hero, "The two cops that took the bullets, they're the heroes." He added that Raul Nunez, armed with an officer's gun, "was coming full steam. Right at me. Popping off rounds ... . He obviously knew I was the police." more ›
