It's Another Scorching Day, So Cooling Centers Are Open

The heat wave is not letting up, and the city is opening the cooling centers. The Office of Emergency Management says, "Air-conditioned City cooling centers will be open Wednesday as temperatures remain in the 90s. With the heat index expected to climb above 100 later in the week, OEM reminds New Yorkers to take precautions. Stay out of the sun as much as possible. When in the sun, wear sunscreen and a hat to protect your face and head. Remember to check on family and friends as heat can affect people differently. Seniors, young children, and people taking certain medications have a higher risk of heat-related illnesses." more ›

Steamy Weather Continues Today, Heat Index May Surge Past 100

The heat advisory continues today, as today's expected high of 96 degrees coupled with humidity will make it feel miserable. According to the National Weather Service, "A HEAT ADVISORY IS ISSUED FOR NEW YORK CITY WHEN THE COMBINATION OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY IS EXPECTED TO MAKE IT FEEL LIKE IT IS AT LEAST 95 DEGREES FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS...OR 100 DEGREES FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME. TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN POSSIBLE...RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE. Heat Advisory Still In Effect

With the heat advisory in effect for yet another day, the NYC Office of Emergency Management has opened cooling centers once again. 1010 WINS reports, "National Weather Service meteorologist Lauren Nash the weekend weather was part of another heat wave, defined as three or more consecutive days of temperatures over 90 degrees. But she said it won't be nearly as uncomfortable as the four days that cooked the Northeast earlier this month." more ›

City Opens Cooling Centers Today, Tomorrow

Because temperatures are expected to be in the 90s today and tomorrow, the city is opening its cooling centers (find them here; here are some tips on beating the heat). Last week, during the heat wave, the NY Times' Ariel Kaminer visited one of the centers, which seem to be populated by regulars and not many people just looking for an air-conditioned sanctuary. Heat Wave: Cooling Centers Open, East River Swim A Bad Idea

Yesterday was so hot and sticky the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory, which it does whenever the heat and humidity combine to make the temperature feel like 95 degrees or more. The high temperature was 92, and today's expected to get even grosser, with a high of 93 expected. Some combination of heat and mental illness may have driven 27-year-old Joshua Knee to dive into the East River at 72nd Street yesterday; Firefighter Justin McNally, who helped fish Knee out of the swift-moving soup, tells the Daily News, "I think he was just going for a swim." Knee was wearing swim trunks, and is now being held in the psychiatric ward at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell. more ›
