"Cookie Man" Leaving City Without Free Vegan Cookie Outlet

Brooklyn musician Scott Alexander, better known as the "Cookie Man," is leaving New York to be with his wife in California. You mean giving out vegan cookies for free from an inflatable couch on the street isn't as rewarding as love? Comedian Dave Keating, who organized Alexander's goodbye-show last night at The Suffolk, told the Daily News, "Damn. He is taking his delicious cookies with him." But Alexander hopes that the West Coast will be as receptive to his baking endeavors. "I'm actually hoping that doing the cookie thing might help me find a job. People seem to be most impressed by me when they see me giving away cookies." more ›

    Stranger With Cookies

    Stranger With Cookies

Who doesn't want free cookies from a complete stranger on an inflatable couch? If the idea doesn't freak you out, then bookmark this Twitter feed, where one seemingly good-intentioned fella updates his whereabouts. Why would you want to know where he is? Because he's going to give you a free homemade vegan cookie! He tells us, "I have been going out a couple times a week, inflating a green couch, giving out FREE COOKIES, and making friends. I'll be out today in Union Square around 4:00-6:00 p.m." If you miss him, you know where to find him next. His name is Scott Alexander, and according to this website, he's got a wife at home, is "a doorman by day and a musician by night." Another blogger recently encountered the cookie man, saying, "everyone knows chocolate chip cookies are a sure way to open hearts-even if they’re vegan. (These really were the best vegan treats I’ve had)." Sounds good to us, even if it is, what he calls, "a reverse promotional experiment" to spread his music. more ›

Stella D'Oro Sale Means Black & White Flight Out of the Bronx

Stella D'Oro Sale Means Black & White Flight Out of the Bronx

Stella D'Oro, the local makers of cookies and breadsticks that you used to be able to take almost anywhere, has been sold and is leaving its longtime home up in the Bronx. Earlier this summer, workers of the Kingsbridge cookie factory were put on a roller coaster ride when a judge ruled in their favor of their yearlong strike only to be told by owners Brynwood Partners that the court's costly decision was prompting a shutting down of the factory. Workers demanded that Brynwood sell Stella D'Oro so that operations could continue and the company complied...only to have new owners Lance Inc inform them the new jobs would be about 500 miles west in Ohio. Following the news, the union released a statement saying, "We weren't wrong in what we did. What's wrong is that the law allows companies to sell off its business in order to avoid a judgment of the law." Well, at least 75 years of baking cookies and a hardfought labor battle aren't all for naught—Lance Inc says Stella D'Oro is "a perfect fit in with the niche brand strategy that we have." more ›

Umami Festival Urges Artists to Play With Their Food
