Paramore Arrives One of our favorite albums of the year is by these girl-fronted teenage pop-punkers, and they were in town this week to headline their largest local show yet at Roseland Ballroom. It was the last show of a massive national tour, but you wouldn't know it seeing front woman Hayley Williams running around stage with the rest of her band. Paramore may not win any originality contests, but they've got more fire and...

The city of New York is mourning the death of Brooke Astor. The philanthropist, who died yesterday at age 105, had channeled millions from her husband's fortune into a numbers of institutions and organizations - from Carnegie Hall to small community groups across all boroughs. The NY Times obituary makes a very good point about why the $195 million she donated through the Astor Foundation was so important: "Although the foundation was not large compared with powerhouses like Ford, Rockefeller and Carnegie, its contributions often served as seed money: others followed, knowing that if Mrs. Astor had given her seal of approval to a cause, it was worthy of support."

If you're itching for some baseball during this season's All-Star break, and hate the Yankees too much to endure a rebroadcast of last night's premiere of The Bronx is Burning, The New York Sun recommends an HBO documentary on the Brooklyn Dodgers that will premiere tomorrow night. "Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush" chronicles a decade of seasons (plus one) for the team and the borough it belonged to, from 1947 to 1957.

Ah, summer in New York: hot-dog contests, fireworks, the beach, and, don't forget, a stolid steamy blanket of humidity that greets all who dare to step outside their freon fortresses. But summer in the city needn't be all about sweating through the wet-dog daze.

Certainly you've heard of Flight of the Conchords by now. The music-comedy duo that scored their own HBO series after cracking up millions worldwide are playing Gramercy Theater tonight in front of a sold out crowd. Didn't get tickets? Yeah, neither did we. But the two chaps were kind enough to give us a Zune as a consolation prize for you, so now at least you can laugh out loud on the F train while watching their show.

Bruni doubles up this week, visiting both Pera in midtown and Dennis Foy in Tribeca. Each restaurant receives one star and the summation that they're worth stopping by if you're in the neighborhood. At Pera, the grilled meats stand out, though Bruni warns, "Stray far from 'tradition' and you risk disappointment, or at least boredom." He likes Dennis Foy's "French-inflected" food, particularly the gnocchi and the crab tian. Calls the restaurant "a worthy but low-wattage addition to the New York dining scene."

Just the other day we drooled over an Urban Lobster menu, wishing we'd had the funds to dine on delicious king crab legs and lobster. If you've done the same, then this is the contest for you.

Meat Loaf and Broadway sort of seem like a match made in heaven, or perhaps hell would be more appropriate, as he is taking his Bat out of Hell albums and bringing them to life on the Great White Way. The one-night-only concert, aptly called "Bat Out of Hell on Broadway", will take place November 2 at New York’s Palace Theatre.

Sure, the a Hawaiian Tropic Zone Restaurant in midtown is hot - its grand opening was so crowded it had to be shut down and its waitresses wearing bikinis while serving food and drink. But if you thought the waitresses wore bikinis because they couldn't afford more clothes, think again. It turns out that many of the waitresses are women who win Hawaiian Tropic contests across the country and were given the chance to strut their stuff and sling the hash in the city. The Post reveals that there's basically a Hawaiian Tropic dorm where most of the women live:

The Texans live with eight other recruits in two three-bedroom pads in an eight-story walkup on the Upper East Side owned by Dennis Riese, who owns the Hawaiian Tropic Zone with PM nightclub honcho Adam Hock.

Carl Lennertz is a true publishing insider, and he's got the blog of the same name to prove it to prove it. On the HarperCollins blog, he shares details about both the business of bookselling, as well as random news of contests, poetry, credit card advice, memories, and other miscellanea, or, in his words, "books, music, movies, the big picture, and absurd rants." A thirty-year veteran of the book industry, the 53-year-old Long Island native has worked at various bookstores, as well as Book Sense, Knopf and Random House, before landing at HarperCollins, where he serves as VP of Independent Retailing.

This week we took a chance. For our wine tasting group, the theme was wines of Northern and Central Italy, and instead of going big, we went small—really small. We knew we would be up against big Barolos and robust Amarones. We suspected many of the wines would cost over $75 a bottle; ours was less than $25. Bite my tongue for saying this, but bigger isn’t always better, and when it comes to wine (and apparently hot dog eating contests) sometimes the little guy comes out the victor.
