In the Bronx a heroic dad of two young girls was stabbed to death by a group of vicious teens Friday night, while attempting to protect the 16-year-old son of a friend. The teen had been involved in an altercation between two rival groups earlier in the day, and after night fell prowlers came back looking for him. “I’ll hang with you,” 26-year-old Orlando Salgado told the teen, according to the AP, but the thugs stabbed him twice and ran. "For saving his life, we're going to take yours now," one of the attackers allegedly told him.

Coming This Spring to NY: Jobs!?
This spring the city's hiring freeze may finally thaw. According to a new study lots of New York businesses say they’ll take on new employees in the coming months. Sixteen percent of the 18,000 companies surveyed said hiring was in the cards; that’s 4 percent more than last quarter. NY1 says just nine percent will make job cuts, down from twice that much in the previous count. We'll believe it when we see it, but stats say construction workers will find sites-a-plenty. As for finance, that industry's still on lockdown.
Crane Company to Face Manslaughter Charges
Two years after a collapsing crane killed two workers on the Upper East Side, the crane company’s owner—in addition to an employee and the company itself—is expected to face charges of manslaughter. When two cranes came crashing down in 2008, the Manhattan DA launched an investigation of James Lomma that turned up evidence the machinery wasn’t properly repaired after being struck by lightning. "In answer to the question about how I feel about Jimmy Lomma being taken away in handcuffs, I say it's a start and about time,” said one of the workers' fathers. “It will never bring my son back...but it might finally be the beginning of paying real attention to the safety of workers who risk their lives to feed their families."
Brooklyn Shop Caters to Lady Laborers
Bearing a window display of brightly colored hard hats and Rosie the Riveter posters, a new-ish Prospect Heights store sells gear for female construction workers and the ladies of the MTA, FDNY and NYPD. "I couldn't walk into a regular store and get anything that was comfortable or fit. Dealing with oversized gear is dangerous, so I had a vision," said Deidre Douglas, who opened the store a year ago. Now, in the small but growing world of female laborers Woman Up! is making a name for itself as the place to get the goods to do the job.
