Renderings: Welcome To Williamsburg Park, OSA's New Outdoor Venue

Earlier this month the Open Space Alliance was looking for design proposals for the 50 Kent space, which will now host the concerts that used to be held a few blocks over, on the Williamsburg Waterfront by The Edge (and at McCarren Park Pool before that). Now they've started up a Facebook page, and earlier today posted a few renderings of what the space will look like come summer. Needless to say, the neighbors complaining about the new location have lost this battle, but expect more come summer. more ›

Radiohead Skips NYC, But Maybe Getting Home From Newark Won't Kill You?

Radiohead Skips NYC, But Maybe Getting Home From Newark Won't Kill You?

Once again, our precious Radiohead has bypassed Madison Square Garden in favor of, uh, greener pastures in New Jersey. The last time the greatest band in human history performed in an arena conveniently located for important, time-pressed New Yorkers, it was 2006 at Madison Square Garden (their impossibly-sold-out Roseland shows in November don't count, and we're not counting Occupy Wall Street either). A number of east coast tour dates were announced today, and the closest Radiohead will get to NYC is the Prudential Center in lovely downtown Newark. PATH train, here we come! more ›

OSA Wants Design Proposals For New Williamsburg Waterfront Concert Site

OSA Wants Design Proposals For New Williamsburg Waterfront Concert Site

Last time we checked in with the Open Space Alliance's summer concert series on the Williamsburg Waterfront, they were battling neighbors who wanted them out of the area. Last summer a few locals were traumatized when they mistook nitrous-huffing Widespread Panic fans in the streets as a zombie apocalypse—after that, they pushed for the OSA to make changes with the concert series. The OSA's solution was to move to a new site... about two blocks away. All has been quiet since, and now the OSA has announced they're looking for design proposals to build out the new site, so it would seem they won. more ›

Video: Andrew Bird Debuts New Album, Break It Yourself, At The Bell House

Andrew Bird will release his twelfth studio album, Break It Yourself, next month—and last night, the insanely talented multi-instrumentalist performed the record in its entirety at The Bell House for the first time. "I knew this was going to be a fun one to play live," Bird noted during the enthralling 90-minute long concert, which also included a couple of songs from his back catalog (the always uplifting "Tables and Chairs" and "Effigy") and a pair of Handsome Family covers. Tickets for the surprise show, which was announced just a day earlier, appear to have landed entirely in the hands of Bird's fans, who soaked up the new sounds with hushed awe. It's rare to encounter such an attentive crowd at a rock club—from bar to stage the entire room was all ears, and Bird seemed more relaxed and comfortable than we've ever seen him before. more ›

Kraftwerk Concert Ticket Company Explains "Debacle," Scalpers Asking $42K

Kraftwerk Concert Ticket Company Explains "Debacle," Scalpers Asking $42K

The CEO for the company that "handled" the "selling" of Kraftwerk tickets for the "group's" run of eight "performances" at MoMA has apologized for yesterday's debacle, in which basically "nobody" got tickets for the intimate shows. (And if you did score tickets, please STFU, ja?) According to a letter posted on the ShowClix website, CEO Joshua Dziabiak freely admits "we failed many of you." Will he resign over the scandal, then invite disgruntled Kraftwerk fans to publicly stone him to death? No. But he's real sowwwwy! The letter explains: more ›

Penn Station ALERT: Phish Fan Threat Level Raised To Orange

Penn Station ALERT: Phish Fan Threat Level Raised To Orange
             + 1 more

Beginning yesterday and continuing through Sunday morning, the Phish fan threat level has been raised to orange in a ten block radius surrounding Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. Commuters using Penn Station are strongly advised to consider alternative means of transport, as the streets and sidewalks are nearly impassible due to dreadlocked trustafarians offering heady nugs for your extra. As an alternative, travelers bound for Long Island are advised to take the subway to Atlantic Terminal and transfer to the LIRR there for eastbound, non-phatty service. more ›

Williamsburg Waterfront Concerts To Be Debated, Again, Tonight

Williamsburg Waterfront Concerts To Be Debated, Again, Tonight

Two weeks ago, it was proposed at a community board meeting that the waterfront concerts held by the OSA in Williamsburg be moved... two blocks from the current location. The proposal was to appease neighbors, who are complaining about the summertime concerts and overflow of attendees into the streets in their neighborhood. After all, it's all fun and games until nitrous-huffing zombies are outside of your window. more ›

After Neighbor Complaints, Williamsburg Waterfront Concerts Will Move... Slightly

After Neighbor Complaints, Williamsburg Waterfront Concerts Will Move... Slightly

Change was in the air following one woman's account of nitrous-fueled zombie hippies taking over her block after a Widespread Panic concert on the Williamsburg waterfront this summer. Last night a Community Board meeting was held to address the location, and it seems the Open Space Alliance (who host the concerts) and CB1 have come to an agreement: future events will be held a couple of blocks away, at a vacant lot on Kent and North 11th Street. more ›

For those not down with Shaggy 2 Dope or Violent J, Gathering of the Juggalos is the annual festival for fans of the Midwestern horrorcore rap duo Insane Clown Posse, or ICP. Going eleven years strong, this year's four-day Gathering was at Hogrock, IL, and our intrepid photographer Kiernan was in the thick of it. Brace yourselves for a wasabi-snorting contest, a dude getting punched in the junk as punishment, lots of face paint and Faygo, Faygo, everywhere. more ›

Flashback: Music Fans Crowd The South Street Seaport, Circa 1973

Sometime around 1973, concerts started taking place at the South Street Seaport at what looks like Pier 17 (which still houses concerts today). The caption on this photo—which was taken in June of 1973—reads, "Folk singing and dancing has found a new home at the South Street Seaport on the East River near Brooklyn Bridge. Enthusiastic crowds gather several times a week during the summer to enjoy the show and the music, view the harbor boats, and breathe the sea air." more ›

Bon Iver At United Palace: A Schizophrenic Search For The Truth

Bon Iver At United Palace: A Schizophrenic Search For The Truth

We've spent the better part of three years carefully avoiding Bon Iver, not for any particular reason than pure stubbornness. When someone is hanging from every streetlamp in town proclaiming how essential and earth-shattering an artist is, there's a certain pleasure one derives from ignoring them. Besides: you never get let down if you never buy in. But one of the benefits of having a completely unfounded distaste for Bon Iver is that we went to last night's show at the United Palace with open ears, besides a cursory listen of Justin Vernon's first effort, For Emma, Forever Ago and Bon Iver's recently released self-titled LP. What follows is a conversation between a Lover and a Hater. more ›

Bad Deals: Ticketmaster Teams Up With Walmart

JellyNYC's Chris Goldstein Talks Rock Beach, Being Misunderstood

JellyNYC's Chris Goldstein Talks Rock Beach, Being Misunderstood

This summer Jelly has left their longtime home of Williamsburg, cut ties with the Open Space Alliance, dropped their Pool Parties series, and secured the Aviator Sports Complex for six free events way out in south Brooklyn, adjacent to the Rockaways. Dubbed Topman Presents Rock Beach, the all day events feature music, food, booze, Slip 'n Slide and dodgeball. This Sunday will be Rock Beach's second run, with Death Grips, Miracles Club Night Manager, and our personal favorite Bass Drums of Death. Jelly's jack-of-all-trades Chris Goldstein talks to us about Rock Beach, the geographical nuances of Brooklyn and Queens, Shirtless Tom, and why the Pool Parties are dead and gone. more ›

Welcome To The Future: Meet Pollee, The Women's Urinal

Welcome To The Future: Meet Pollee, The Women's Urinal

Ladies, are you tired of watching the men's Porta-Potta line flow freely like pent-up urine after two craft beers before a Dave Matthews encore? A Danish design company believes it holds the answer to the long restroom queues that women have to endure in public places via their Pollee line of women's urinals. The three versions of the urinal—Shy, Topless, and Naked, which all display different degrees of privacy—debuted at Denmark's Roskilde Festival (which seems to be THE place for peeing technology) last month, and while we don't speak Danish, the reviews seem to be positive! more ›

We've compiled the best of the season, from the all-out, flip-flop destroying extravaganzas to the more intimate evenings under the moon. more ›

"Real Brooklynites" Demand Fewer Williamsburg Waterfront Concerts

"Real Brooklynites" Demand Fewer Williamsburg Waterfront Concerts

Here we go again! Community Board 1 (more like Complaining Board 1, eh?) is trying to strong arm the Open Space Alliance into cutting back on the number of outdoor concerts they're holding on Williamsburg's waterfront this summer. Last night the board's parks committee voted to limit the number of large-scale concerts at East River State Park, by cancelling five shows and reducing capacity from 6,500 to 5,000 people. That's a nice wish list, but it ain't happenin'. more ›

Williamsburg Locals Still Want Concert-Going Kids Off Their Lawn!

Williamsburg Locals Still Want Concert-Going Kids Off Their Lawn!

The members of Community Board 1 may have voted unanimously against concerts on Williamsburg's waterfront, but they are still going to happen this summer thanks to a little contract that was already signed by the OSA and the State Parks Department. That isn't stopping that CB1 crew from yammering on about the nuisance the shows create, however. According to the Brooklyn Paper, the locals want the concerts to produce less noise, and less trash. more ›

[UPDATED] Community Board Votes To Ban Concerts On Williamsburg's Waterfront (But They're Happening Anyway!)

[UPDATED] Community Board Votes To Ban Concerts On Williamsburg's Waterfront (But They're Happening Anyway!)

[UPDATED BELOW] Last night one part of the Williamsburg community rose up against another, possibly more "social" part of the Williamsburg community. This all went down at the CB1 meeting, where much of the night was spent discussing that proposed moratorium on all new liquor licenses in the area (more on that later). The shocker came at the end of the meeting, however, when community board members voted unanimously to ban all concerts from the Williamsburg Waterfront! more ›

Are Cameraphones Killing Concerts?

Are Cameraphones Killing Concerts?

Did you hear about that guy in Los Angeles whose Natalie Merchant concert vibe was harshed by that dude and his cell phone? No? Well, he's just one poster boy for the masses who want technology turned off at concerts, and today the Wall Street Journal stage dives right into the controversy—because if video killed the radio star, couldn't camera phones kill a concert? more ›

Rikers Inmates Sentenced To... Summer Concert Series

Did We Stumble Upon The New JellyNYC Outdoor Venue?

JellyNYC—perhaps fed up with the politics and their "fake non-profit" overlords hassling them at their home-away-from pool, AKA the East River Park Police State—are on the cusp of announcing a new summer concert series. (Yes, the Big Show will still go on at the state park.) There aren't a lot of details yet, but it sounds like they're trying to get back to their roots of laid-back semi-DIY free shows. more ›

She & Him Take Governors Island For Free 4th Show

Despite the blazing heat, droves of people rode the ferry to Governor's Island yesterday to hear She & Him, their performance being part of the free "Gone to Governors" concert series this summer. The enormous line at the Battery Maritime Building Manhattan departure point proved a bit of a hassle; the advertised four-minute travel time from there to the island turned to twenty-some minutes. more ›

Williamsburg's Pool Parties Announced

Williamsburg's Pool Parties Announced

The Pool Parties are just about a week away, and the lineup has finally been announced... maybe. Here's what the schedule allegedly looks like; it was posted yesterday but the organizers at Jelly then wrote something about "the person posing as one of us, the elusive non-existent 'hacker' and the fake line up." What? Anyway, we happened to see a confirmed lineup earlier this week that looked very similar to this, so there's a pretty good shot it's what you'll be hearing at the Williamsburg waterfront this summer: more ›

The Drake Effect: More Seaport Concerts Canceled

The Drake Effect: More Seaport Concerts Canceled

In unsurprising news, the Seaport has canceled more concerts planned for Pier 17 this summer following last week's disastrous show, which was thrown by Paper magazine and included performances by rapper Drake and pop stars Hanson. The magazine had more shows planned for the summer season, including one by Ke$ha, which have now been canceled. more ›

Legal Scalping Law To Run Out?

Legal Scalping Law To Run Out?

">allowed legalized scalping to take place over the past three years is due to run out this Saturday, and it is looking more and more unlikely that it'll get renewed. Back in 2007, the bill was introduced to try to bring the scalping market into the open and regulate it more easily. But the hold up now is because of paperless tickets, which is favored by Ticketmaster because it boxes out brokers by requiring a ticket's original buyer to verify his or her identity at the box office. Paperless ticketing gives more control over to companies like Ticketmaster, while making it harder for consumers to resell tickets. Pols such as Richard Brodsky want more control over ticket prices, and are against the measure: “Proponents of this often call it a free market. But permitting unfettered resale is an attack on the free market.” more ›
