16-48 Month Prison Sentence For Driver Who Put Bloomberg Aide In Vegetative State

In February of last year a 22-year-old Bloomberg aide, Erinn Phelan, was struck by a 1993 Acura Legend after pushing a friend out of the car's path. Phelan remains in a vegetative state but today, at least, her family saw some justice served against the woman who was driving the Acura, 30-year-old Frances Jasmin. "You must be punished in the most-severe way, but it hardly seems adequate," Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Joseph McKay said before imposing the maximum sentence of 1 1/3 to four years behind bars for the class D felony of leaving the scene of an accident. The judge also recommended that her driver's license be revoked forever. more ›

Woman Wins $125K From City After NYPD Refused Her Insulin

A diabetic woman who was caught smoking pot in the Lower East Side has won a $125K settlement from the city because police refused to let her administer insulin after her blood sugar rose to dangerous levels in lockup. Cops at the Seventh Precinct confiscated 30 year-old Jaime Rutkowski's glucose meter and her insulin, and only called EMTs after her blood sugar rose higher than three times the normal level. "Any endocrinologist will confirm that this is enough for a Type-1 diabetic to go into shock, slip into a coma, and die," her attorney tells the Post. Rutkowski was treated at Bellevue for the October incident, and discharged from police custody. more ›

A Bronx woman who was standing in a parking space on East 14th Street in order to save the spot for her boyfriend is now in a coma after an argument over parking turned violent. Police tell the Post electrician Oscar Fuller became unhinged last Friday night around 11:40 p.m. when Lana Rosas, a petite 25-year-old, refused to let him park his white minivan in the space. The family of deliveryman Tian Sheng Lin, who has been declared brain dead after being struck by a texting teenage driver, says they're not ready to take him off life support yet. His daughter told ABC 7, "I hope he could wake-up because we still need him." But the family's lawyer, whom they hired to sue 19-year-old driver Nechama Rothberger, says the situation looks grim. He told the Daily News, "It would take a miracle, but the family is still hoping for recovery." Harry Martinez allegedly returned to his parents' Bushwick apartment early Saturday morning, where the thugs chased him up to the roof. Two men have been sentenced to two years in prison each for participating in a brutal beating that left a Binghamton University student in a coma and damaged relations between the United States and Serbia. Edin Dzubar, 25, and Sanel Softic, 22, apologized and pleaded guilty to felony assault for kicking Bryan Steinhauer during a Binghamton bar in May 2008 that left the Brooklyn-native in a coma for months, according to the Post. Their sentencing comes after the alleged primary assailant, 23-year-old basketball player Miladin Kovacevic, fled to Serbia to avoid trial in the United States. One Arrest Made in Brutal Beating of Pratt Student

Detectives from the 88th Precinct have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with last week’s assault on Eddy Sanchez, a 22-year-old Pratt architecture student who is still in critical condition in a medically induced coma at Kings County Hospital Center. The suspect, Eugene Adams, is charged with assault, robbery and criminal possession of stolen property. A police source tells The Local Adams resides at 1100 Bedford Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, three long blocks east from the site of the August 4th attack at Grand and Lexington Avenues in Clinton Hill. After releasing surveillance footage of teens attempting to use Sanchez's ATM card at a bodega, police tracked down Adams through a tip called in to the Crime-Stoppers hot line, (800) 577-TIPS. According to ABC News, as many as four other teens may have been involved in the attack, but no other arrests were immediately made. It's being reported that the suspects beat Sanchez after he refused to give them money, and one of the assailants used a crowbar. more ›

Last week, a 22-year-old Pratt student was robbed and brutally beaten at Grand and Lexington Avenues in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill section. Eddy Sanchez had been walking towards to the Pratt campus around 10 p.m. last Tuesday night when, WCBS 2 reports, five teens surrounded him—"They demanded money, and when Sanchez initially refused, the suspects punched and kicked him into submission, and took what they wanted." A man who is a stock broker by day and cab driver by night is in a coma for the third consecutive day after being brutally beaten up at a Harlem gas station Saturday night. Bekoe Adigun-Bomani was punched in the head at the BP gas station on West 125th Street by an assailant who drove off in a silver Nissan. A surveillance tape has been unable to assist police in tracking down a suspect. Adigun-Bomani's mother told NY1, "I can't bear to see my son laying there with tubes all over, fighting for his life. So, that person, whoever you are, we are going to find you. We won't give up because we are a strong family." The last few days have been a tragically unlucky stretch for the taxi industry with the livery cab driver in Staten Island killed in a hit-and-run and a cab dispatcher in the Bronx shot dead outside his apartment. more ›

A 41-year-old man was arrested in a hit-and-run incident that has left a 9-year-old girl in a coma. Saturday night, Nacirema Brown had run into Rockaway Avenue when a tan Nissan Maxima hit her. Witnesses told the girl's mother the driver got out of the car to yell, "You stupid little bitch!" before driving away.
