On Friday, the website for Columbia's student newspaper, the Columbia Daily Spectator, went down amid "some serious internal - and possibly legal - drama going down." Now it seems like its online editor went rogue, to protest the editor-in-chief and managing editor, and "decided to take the website down until the demands put forward by the managing board members were met." Kids today!

CB9 Votes Against Columbia's Manhattanville Plan
On the heels of its land use committee's vote last week, Community Board 9, which represents West Harlem, voted to oppose Columbia's ambitious plans to develop a 17-acre area in West Harlem. However, as the Columbia Daily Spectator explains, CB9 did offer "ten specific conditions" that Columbia must agree to before the community board will give their approval.
Good News, Bad News for Columbia
It's a mixed bag for Columbia today. The school was probably happy to find out that it ranked 9th in U.S News & World Report's latest top college ranking issues, but it's no fun to learn that its billion-dollar Manhattanville project was rejected by a community board committee.
Video of the Day: Columbia's Walk Out War Protest
Yesterday, a couple hundred Columbia students walked out to protest the war, and CTV News has video, and you'll see protesters chanting for troops to be removed as they march on and around campus (apparently there was free hot chocolate during the cold day). Interestingly, the Columbia College Democrats removed their support for the walk out "in part because of disagreements over whether to call for divestment," according to the NY Sun.
To Drink, Perchance, While Underage at Columbia
Gothamist was reading the Columbia Daily Spectator, trying to recapture our youth (we are getting OLD), when we stopped at this headline: "New Policy Will Hurt Columbia Fanbase." Forget what the new policy is... Gothamist was surprised that Columbia's sports team actually had fanbases. There are alumni, yes, but fans? In our day, Gothamist would call them "fellow students." Anyway, the new policy is that Columbia is not allowing tailgating at football games, and making the legal drinkers buy beer from a new designated concession area. Hey, anything to put more money into the endowment! Here's some advice from Gothamist: Become a part of your dorm's house committee, getting the funding and throw illicit parties in the basement.
Bless Us For Our Animals
More about the blessing from the Columbia Daily Spectator. And the Daily News tries to play both sides, with an article about adopting pets from shelters and one about designer dogs, like cockapoos and schnoodles. We love schnoodles, but if you're thinking of getting a pet, go to a shelter first - there are some great animals who need homes there! And for information about pet adoptions in NYC: New York City Animal Care and Control. Plus Gothamist's animal archives.
