Ah, Spring. The weather feels fresh, the trees start to bloom and the free outdoor music events around the city start trickling out. This week saw the release of the Central Park Summerstage lineups, which is one of the best and longest running summer music series in town. Always a treat, this year is one of the most impressive, with a list of shows that seem too good to be free. The artists span from the indie elite (Vampire Weekend, Santogold and Battles) to the more contemporary selections like Los Lonely Boys, Sharon Jones, Mavis Staples. Check out the entire lineup here, as well as some of the benefit shows announced so far. Go Summer!

After GBH announced that Courtney Love was to play a free show at Hiro Ballroom, the biggest question besides what she'd sound like or how badly would Hiro screw up the crowd control, was what type of raucous scandal would Love cause during the set. Would she be trashed? Would she get into a fight? Would she show at all? Well, to the pleasant surprise of any real fan, the show went on without a hitch, and Love played a solid set of some old favorites as well as a bunch of new songs, many of which were co-written by professional hitmaker Linda Perry. Check out Freshbread for some pics (like the one above), and Ephemerist and Productshop for some more reviews.
Although the mass media informs us that our nation was monolithically united around last night's final Sopranos episode, we believe a small pocket of dissenters were tuned into CBS, where the 61st Annual Tony Awards were broadcast over the span of three hours. We know from The Playgoer’s pithy live-blogging that there were big musical numbers by each of the nominated musicals, a (“thankfully”) drunk Eddie Izzard and an appearance by American Idol sensation Fantasia Barrino belting out a song from The Color Purple.
We're sort of over the Colbert vs The Decemberists publicity stunt, but it aired last night - and it was pretty hilarious. There were appearances by: Henry Kissinger, the New York Times Anthony DeCurtis, Jim Anderson, Eliot Spitzer, Peter Frampton and Apples in Stereo's Robert Schneider (Stereogum has the lyrics to his song from the show last night). No Colin Meloy, though...Colbert said, "The rest of the band is back in Portland probably growing hemp and trying to find the most pretentious rhyme for "salamander". I'll save you guys some time, it's "coriander"."
This was not a very happy week for the -ist network as one of our own,
• Chris Ott starts verbal slapping match with The Decemberists Colin Meloy.
As we stated before, there is far far more to CMJ than our little series of parties. Over 1000 bands were in town last week, and while nobody could possibly catch them all, the idea is to see as much as you can and maybe discover a few new favorites. Rather than scrape together a drab roundup of the day by day, we decided to award certain aspects of CMJ for making a mark on the 2006 marathon. Here we go...
Not that you were asking, but we know you wanted it. The obligatory Best of '05 List. We chose to list off the Best NYC Shows in 2005. We compiled this list after closely surveying and consulting...ourselves. Here are our Top 11 NYC Shows of 2005. That's right, we said ELEVEN.
When the Summerstage lineup was announced last spring, one show clearly stood out from the rest. To have three of the most popular indie-pop bands playing the same bill at Central Park was as much a Seth Cohen dream come true as it was for Gothamist. Naturally, we were there.
Will the real Neil Diamond please step forward?

The Decemberists
The logo on their website still says Summerstage '04, but the benefit concert lineups scream of '05 (or '95, rather). That's right, SummerStage is back and tickets go on sale this Saturday at noon (is drinking at the shows still illegal?) Our mind is sort of blown that we'll be seeing Ben Gibbard and Colin Meloy in the same place, at the same time...so we're going to go fan ourselves while you look at the schedule and ticketing info after the jump...
Yesterday we gave you the Fever and today it's the Decemberists Colin Meloy. Last night we headed over to the late show at the Fez to see him perform his own songs along with some Morrissey tunes. Due to the fact that this was a solo show, the images aren't very plentiful, but we've included captions and a video clip!
Hyper-important must-see event of the month, first:
Time to start the new year off right, by seeing live music and not being left out on the cold cold sidewalk listening to your favorite songs echoing down the snow-filled street. This month there are a lot of hyped up bands coming our way. We are mainly talking about the Arcade Fire, if you don't have tickets we don't know what to tell you. If you're good at haikus you could try this contest. We'll also be having some ticket give-a-ways for some shows this month, and maybe MAYBE there will be an Arcade Fire one. But in the meantime, here are some tickets on sale that you can still buy:
