Split Personality Weekend Weather

The clear skies we were looking forward to during the day yesterday finally arrived after midnight and departed around sunrise. Sigh. The sun will make a few brief appearances today but is going into hiding again tomorrow as a cold front begins to push this stubborn high pressure system out to sea.

Cooler Week Ahead

The mercury is making a valiant run into the mid 70s this afternoon. Sunlight in late September isn't strong enough to warm us up all by itself, a helper breeze out of the south is needed to drag warmer air this far north. Here's the catch: The southerly wind is ahead of a cold front which will cool the city down for the remainder of the week.

Finally Less Humid

A cold front passed through the region last night and slowly tagging along behind it is some drier air. The dew point temperature has dropped by ten degrees, making venturing outside a whole lot more bearable. The dry air means sun mixed with clouds and a slight chance of late-afternoon showers as the sunlight heats things up to the mid 80s.

Weatherwise, Friday A "Changeable Day"

This post-Memorial Day weather stinks! Yesterday's high of 61 degrees was 15 degrees below normal, and WCBS 2 reports, "Friday will be a changeable day. There could be some rain in the morning, then possibly some sun will poke through the clouds during the afternoon. The more sun we see, the better chance for strong thunderstorms later in the day as a cold front approaches the area." Yes, more sun=more thunderstorm possibility! WCBS 2 meteorologist Mike Latella explains, "Add sunshine to an unstable atmosphere and an approaching cold front. That is the recipe for thunderstorms." Today's weather will vary—low to mid 70s in the city but in the 60s along the coast. But keep the faith: Saturday will be sunny, with highs in the upper 70s (there is a small threat of a shower late in the afternoon or evening) while Sunday will be partly cloudy, highs in the mid 70s.

Moving Away from the Sun

You may not have noticed, but the Earth was at perihelion yesterday. Today, we're a bit further from the sun. The warm weather won't last much longer as a cold front is crossing the region this afternoon. The front should thin out the clouds, perhaps letting the receding sun to shine for a bit. More importantly the temperature will start to drop. Before the front arrives we should see an unseasonably warm high in the upper 40s.

Record High Yesterday

Before yesterday December was running slightly cooler than normal. A record-tying high of 65 pushed the month to nearly a degree warmer than average and had Williamsburg residents enjoying the simple pleasures of the day without resorting to irony. As seen in today's weather graphic, a cold front arrived yesterday evening, leading to an immediate drying of the air and a gradual cooling.

Another gloomy day today. There's a slight chance of showers but that chance will diminish as the coastal low that has brought all the clouds and drizzle finally begins to move out of the picture. The lingering tropical air will keep the temperature in the mid 60s for much of the day and it won't cool off much tonight.

In addition to cooler weather the other meteorological sign that fall has arrived is the speeding up of the atmosphere. The next couple of days will see a bam bam bam of successive weather systems. A weak cold front came through early this morning to bring us clear skies for the day. With any luck the high will reach the mid 70s this afternoon.

Ignore that last forecast! One storm went left, the other went right and the city barely got any rain over the weekend. The mix of sun and clouds we've seen today should switch over to mostly clouds by late-afternoon as a weak cold front passes by. There's a slight chance that the front's passage will kick off a shower or two, especially over Long Island.

How would you like to enjoy two seasons in one week? Well, you don't have much choice if you're in the city for the next few days. Today will be a sunny and mild summer-like day with a high in the low 80s. While Hanna didn't have much impact Saturday night, the swells from the storm will be generating rip currents today.

Like many of us the atmosphere slows down in the summer. A good example of that slowness is the approaching cold front that is kicking off this morning's rain. It has taken nearly a day to travel from Central New York to the northwestern suburbs of the city. The front will take another couple of hours to move through the city so the showers may stick around until early afternoon. Temperatures will be on the low side this morning but should rebound to a near normal high of 83 this afternoon.

Yesterday's high of 40 and low of 28 was exactly average for Valentine's Day. Today, like all the children in Lake Wobegon, will be above average with a high temperature close to 50 degrees. The reverse will be true tomorrow. A cold front tonight will usher in a quick blast of cooler air. The high tomorrow will only be around freezing. Earlier in the week the front looked like a rainmaker, but we should only see a few clouds tonight.

Whoosh! That's the sound of today's weather. The skies may be gloomy this morning but, whoosh, a cold front will bring us abundant sunshine this afternoon. Along with clearing skies will be a much cooler air mass. Look at those crazy temperature drops across the Midwest yesterday. While our temperature drop won't be as extreme as in Chicago, we expect the proverbial mercury to drop into the mid-30s by the time we go home this evening. With that much change there's bound to be wind. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory through five o'clock. Winds will pick up to between 20 and 30 miles and hour during the day. Gusts of 45-50 mph are not out of the question.
