Getting to Meadowlands Worse Than the Jets Game Itself

Getting to Meadowlands Worse Than the Jets Game Itself

You would think NJ Transit would learn their lesson after that nightmarish mob scene which ensued after a U2 concert at the Meadowlands almost exactly one year ago. Could it be they just don't care that thousands of people have to grind together like livestock being herded toward the train platform, where there are too few trains to accommodate the crowd? Judging by the hellish accounts from commuters trying to get to and away from last night's Jets game, they just can't handle it. more ›

Chaotic First Day Of School For Bus-Less Students

Chaotic First Day Of School For Bus-Less Students

With the NYC 2010-2011 school year's arrival yesterday, students got to experience the Department of Education's decision to cut busing for 7th and 8th graders firsthand. Most of the affected student live on Staten Island, where it was a real mess. One mother of a student at Totten Intermediate School told the Staten Island Advance, "We got there an hour before classes started because we knew it was going to be a nightmare. We were trying to beat out the traffic because we knew all the parents would be driving their kids." Indeed: When she left, the "line of cars waiting to drop off students was backed up farther than she could see." more ›

Judge Won't Rule On Senate Coup, Tells Senate To "Resolve" It

A State Supreme Court judge refused to rule on the State Senate's state of ridiculousness and instead urged (again!) the Senators to work out the matter. State Supreme Court Justice Thomas McNamara dismissed Smith vs. Espada (read the decision) and wrote, "A judicially imposed resolution would be an improvident intrusion into the inner workings of a coequal branch of government. The practical effect of having a court decide this issue would be that its decision, if only by perception, would have an influence on the internal workings of the Senate. … To have a court do so would be improper... The failure of the Senate to resolve this issue in an appropriate manner will make them answerable to the electorate." more ›

Senate Democrats Tell Malcolm Smith To Move It

Senate Democrats Tell Malcolm Smith To Move It

To bookend a week that began with a coup in Albany which stripped the Senate Democrats of their majority, Senate Dems met to discuss their leadership and future. And while former Senate majority leader Malcolm Smith (D-Queens) refused to answer reporters' questions about whether he still headed the Democratic conference, the Democrats apparently told Smith that he's out and that Senator John Sampson (D-Brooklyn) will be the "conference's de facto boss." more ›

AIG On Its Face: Furor Grows Against All Things AIG

AIG On Its Face: Furor Grows Against All Things AIG

Everyone is mad as hell at AIG and they're not going to take it anymore! From President Obama and NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo railing against AIG and its executive compensation to the House passing a bill to tax 90% of all bonuses from financial firms receiving bailout funds, the anger has also spread to the Connecticut suburbs where many AIG executives live. more ›
