Post Dispatches Guidos, Nerds to Get Rejected At Clubs

Bad news for Steve Urkel: you probably can't get into the Boom Boom Room. In the latest Post undercover report, six stereotypical clubgoers were sent to "exclusive" clubs like the Boom Boom Room, 1Oak and Marquee to test who could gain entrance. The guido, nerd, "nerdette," cougar, suburban dad and a "Jersey girl" hit the streets in the most outlandishly cliche attire imaginable. Seriously, look at the Post's photos. So, how did they do? more ›

NYPD Shuts Down "Smokeasy" M2 Ultra Lounge

NYPD Shuts Down "Smokeasy" M2 Ultra Lounge

[UPDATE BELOW] It turns out that routine violations of the Smoke Free Air act weren't the only problem at M2 UltraLounge. The police were granted their request to shut down both M2 and Chelsea's Pink New York after describing them as the "Wild West of drug dealing" to the State Supreme Court. The Times reports that investigators found unlicensed security guards, saw fights that guards failed to control, and were able to buy a plethora of illegal drugs—cocaine, ketamine, Vicodin, Ecstasy and marijuana—nine times... in more than two years. That's what's counting as the "Wild West" these days? more ›

Smokeeasy Crackdown Gets Serious, Obnoxious Lounge In Peril!

M2 Ultra Lounge may not get a second chance from the DOH. After yesterday's tribunal hearing, the city is vowing to close at least one of the five clubs brought forth to defend themselves for violating the Smoke-Free-Air Act. Lawyer Thomas Merrill told the Daily News "We made it clear we will go forward and we are not interested in making a deal." Though all five clubs are in danger of getting their licenses revoked, M2 is apparently the worst violator. more ›

DOH May Pull Permits From Five Clubs Notorious for Smoking

Well, it seems the DOH's crackdown on clubs that allow smoking is more than just a routine ticketing blitz. Five nightclubs are scheduled to appear today before a city tribunal that will attempt to take away their food and beverage permits as punishment for ignoring the smoking ban. Department lawyer Thomal Merrill told the Daily News "We think we have a good case. I think we will shut them down." more ›

Save the Nightlife from... Something

While you were out enjoying the night for no reason, others were out enjoying the night for a cause. And that cause is to be able to enjoy many nights, more often, forever and ever. It's here to help you go out more often, stay out later, and age quicker—like Chloe Sevigny over there. more ›

Shocker: Party Promoter Busted for Selling Ecstasy

Shocker: Party Promoter Busted for Selling Ecstasy

In dog-bites-man news, police say a Baruch College finance major who moonlighted as a party promoter made a little extra money by selling Ecstasy! Michail Shimonov, 23, (pictured here with E written all over his face) and his alleged partner in crime Albert Kim are accused of working with an eight-man drug crew that sold E, Ketamine (Special K) and GHB to clubgoers. Investigators say undercover cops bought the drugs during an eight-month narcotics investigation at Pacha and Rebel, and wire taps caught crew members talking on the phone about dealing drugs at Roseland Ballroom and Mansion, now known as M2 Ultra Lounge. Shimonov had 88 Ecstasy pills, each marked with a green gun, when police arrested him; he was allegedly selling them to Kim for $8 a pill, and Kim would then unload them in clubs for $25 each. Shimonov, who worked for the party promotion company Entourage, liked to tell people he was "getting my promotion career in motion." And his poor mother tells the Daily News, "I can only say good things about my son. They can say whatever they want, he's no drug ring leader. Of course not." more ›

Visiting Minister Has a Blessing and a Curse: He Loves to Party

Visiting Minister Has a Blessing and a Curse: He Loves to Party

Clubgoers at NYC hotspots are known for their fancy threads, but no one can front on one high roller's regular work attire: clerical robes. The Daily News has a profile of Reverend Gregory Malia, the Pennsylvania minister who makes regular trips to local clubs and is well-known by staffers for the generous cash he lays out whenever he visits. The divorced dad, who earns big bucks in pharmaceuticals, likes to hit Pink Elephant and Citrine and hears screams of "Father Greg!" from waitresses when he comes through the door--possibly because he's had nights where he has bought a $35,000 bottle and then laid out an extra ten grand on top of the usual 20% tip. And his charity doesn't end there. One source told the News. "He hangs out with waitresses, and sometimes comes back after a big night and takes (them) shopping...If they get someone like Father Greg, they know they're going to have a good night." Reverend Malia, whose business helps treat people who suffer from hemophilia (as he does), told the paper. "I work hard. I make good money...With my health condition, it's a blessing and a curse; [but] I do like to go out." more ›

It’s Ladies’ Night And There’s a Legal Fight

It’s Ladies’ Night And There’s a Legal Fight

Some time ago the New Yorker ran an amusing “Talk of the Town” feature on nightlife crusader Roy Den Hollander, who, unlike most nightclub scolds, isn’t fighting against excessive noise and loose morals – he’s out to put a stop to the scourge that is Ladies’ Night. And not because he disdains the ladies or the night, but because Den Hollander, attorney at law and self-styled pick-up artist, sees it as yet another way The Man tries to keep down the, er, man. more ›

Baseball's Day Of Shame

Baseball's Day Of Shame

The morning started with rumors of names mentioned in Senator George Mitchell's report to Major League Baseball, but not until this afternoon were any rumors substantiated. Stating in his report that “there is much about the illegal use of performance enhancing substances in baseball that I did not learn,” Mitchell proceeded to lay waste to the careers of many notable players, perhaps none more so than Roger Clemens. In the report Brian McNamee, Roger Clemens’... more ›

Jets Aren't Quitters, But They Aren't Good Either

Jets Aren't Quitters, But They Aren't Good Either

With the Jets 3-10, the best thing that can be said about them is that they're still playing hard. They seemed insulted that people thought the Dolphins could beat them last week, and, despite playing in front of empty seats in a heavy rain Sunday, the Jets fought back before losing to the Browns, 24-18. Kellen Clemens scored the Jets' only touchdown with his quarterback sneak in the fourth quarter, but his inconsistent play and... more ›

Todd Patrick, Concert Promoter

Todd Patrick, Concert Promoter

Since settling in New York in 2001, promoter Todd Patrick – known through his website as Todd P – has established himself as a major force in the avant-garde rock scene. In the fastidious spirit of a modern day Bill Graham – though without the passion for profits – Patrick has distinguished himself with his commitment to producing shows at atypical, under-the-radar locations like lofts, rooftops and funky, “illegal” clubs. Often eschewing such vagaries as... more ›

Some People Love Pigeons, Others Just Don't

After City Council member Simcha Felder announced he would propose legislation to ban feeding pigeons, bird lovers joined forces and, yesterday, held a rally at City Hall. Armed with posters like "Save Our Right to Feed Wildlife," "Have U Known Anybody Killed by a Pigeon?", "Pigeons are Beautiful Birds," and "Felder's Pigeon Bill is Poop!", the pro-pigeon protesters spoke out for their feathered friends. One demonstrator told City Room, "We are voices for the... more ›

Jets Set to Prove They Aren't the Worst

Jets Set to Prove They Aren't the Worst

Neither the Jets nor the Dolphins have enjoyed their seasons too much. One half of the Jets' wins came on Sept. 23 when they edged the Dolphins 31-28 at home. Now they travel to Miami. They're 0-5 on the road, but Miami has lost 14 straight. Ironically, the Jets stand to gain the most if they lose and somehow pass the Dolphins in the NFL draft pecking order. But shhh! No one's thinking about that.... more ›

Jenna Jameson's Chinatown Hotspot

Jenna Jameson's Chinatown Hotspot

Earlier this year news of new clubs opening doors in Chinatown emerged, and it seems "clubland" is steadily growing in the 10013. The latest duo to stamp their name on a future hotspot are none other than ex-porn star/savvy-businesswoman Jenna Jameson and Heatherette designer Richie Rich. Though an exact address hasn't been released, the NY Post reports that it will be called The General Store and it will be housed in an old whorehouse. Sounds... more ›

Gail Silverman, Revolutionary Records

Six years ago musician Gail Silverman, tired of watching her fellow female rockers sitting on the sidelines, started her own record label, Revolutionary Records and a concert series called Girls Rock and Girls Rule (GRGR). What started out as just a one gig event has grown into a sort of small-scale hard rock Lilith Fair, with a rotating line-up of local musicians joining a roster of headliners whose tour this year has taken them through... more ›

Last Night's Action: Role Reversal

Last Night's Action: Role Reversal

Rangers 4, Islanders 2: It's a good thing these teams play each other eight times each season. Otherwise, the Rangers might have a confidence problem. Given enough opportunities to beat a particular opponent, any team is bound to cash in sooner or later. After losing the first three games against the Islanders, the Blueshirts finally broke through. Jaromir Jagr and Chris Drury each had a goal and an assist against Rick DiPietro. The Islanders still... more ›

Last Night's Action: Isles Keep Upper Hand

Islanders 2, Rangers 1: For all the success the Rangers have had against the rest of the league, they still can't solve the Islanders. Five-game winning streak? Poof! Rick DiPietro made 18 saves and the Islanders won for the third time in three games between the two clubs. Ruslan Fedotenko and Josef Vasicek each scored in the second period, and Michal Rozsival scored a short-handed goal for the Rangers. He now has seven goals... more ›

Just When We Thought He Was Out, He Could Be Back In!

Just When We Thought He Was Out, He Could Be Back In!

The news that Stephon Marbury is heading back to the Knicks may be only the second-biggest reconciliation in New York sports this week. There are reports that Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees are talking again and discussing what it would take to bring Rodriguez back to the Yankees. Apparently stung by the reaction to the timing of his opt-out, A-Rod has approached the Yankees and at least discussed the possibility of a new deal. The... more ›

Last Night's Action: Still the Knicks

Last Night's Action: Still the Knicks

Magic 112, Knicks 102: As fun as it is to jump on Eddy Curry and his 80:1 pound/rebound ratio, the Knicks have other problems. Dwight Howard made things difficult for one of the Knicks big men -- though the other, Zach Randolph, did manage to have 23 points on 13 rebounds -- but the New York shooters' failure to back them up the frontcourt cost the Knicks this game. The perimeter players didn't play... more ›

Preppy Killer's Girlfriend Getting Evicted

Preppy Killer's Girlfriend Getting Evicted

Were the police surveillance photographs of Shawn Kovell's apartment what set her landlord off? Or was it the fact that she and boyfriend Robert Chambers had been arrested by undercover cops for allegedly selling drugs out of the East 57th Street apartment? Apparently it was something more simple. The couple wasn't able to make the rent. Chambers, infamous to New Yorkers as the Preppy Killer after he admitted to the 1986 strangling Jennifer Levin in... more ›

Initial reports said that Desena was shot when one of the gunmen was picking up his sawed-off shotgun, which he'd dropped. Last Night's Action: A Garden Shootout

Last Night's Action: A Garden Shootout

Rangers 2, Devils 1 (SO): Petr Prucha did enough to finally earn a second "E" for his name. He set up the only goal in regulation and scored the only goal in the shootout. Scott Gomez struck against his former club. The Rangers had other chances, including Chris Drury's breakaway in overtime, so this win helped them sleep better at night. Islands 3, Penguins 2: This could have been a Pyhrric victory. Rick DiPietro got... more ›
