Autopilot, the company that was nice enough to film our last Movable Hype show for us, has posted another great song from the night up on YouTube. Check it out, Cloud Cult sings "Chemicals Collide" at our show on April 17th, 2006.
Just a couple of weeks ago we held our 7th Movable Hype show at the Knitting Factory. If you weren't there you missed an amazing show, with Stars of Track and Field, Land of Talk, Cloud Cult and the Slack Republic all playing. Luckily, AutoPilot Productions filmed the whole thing for us! We'll be posting some of it up here as we get it, for now AutoPilot has put one of the songs from Stars of Track and Field's set up on YouTube...enjoy!
This is not a band that would appear to have any structure or premeditation. It had always felt natural and organic before...that’s just how they roll. So imagine my surprise when, after playing one song, a smoke machine filled the room, some sort of laser light projector shot up towards the ceiling and a monotone computer voice recited a pre-recorded monologue. My first guess was that they had a little too much fun in Chinatown that afternoon, but I later found out they've been using this stuff all tour. They continued through a set that was musically similar to what they had played earlier in the week. Many, but not all of the same songs they usually play live, the adorable and gracious thank yous and other Minnesota-isms that compile their charm. But despite the cliché, it’s NOT all about the music. To see a band live entitles you to a show, defined however the performers choose to give it. To see the band go above and beyond what was expected of them by creating a mood and atmosphere they saw fit to complement their music was truly extraordinary. I’m not sure why I was so surprised, considering everything these guys have ever done has far exceeded my expectations, but the mark of a great band it that they constantly raise the bar. Cloud Cult has never disappointed. Once the smoke cleared and the music stopped, it took a second to realize I was watching them in a club hardly bigger than my bedroom. Everything about this band has become monumentally huge. I have to believe it’s only a matter of time the crowds catch up.
We're a little late on the music picks this week, but we have an excuse. We've been too busy being obsessed about Cloud Cult. They played our Movable Hype show on Monday night and last night they played Cross Pollination at Pianos. Both amazing sets. We now have a bold comment to make to begin this rather bold post: We like Cloud Cult more than we like Arcade Fire.
Our show was filmed, so once we get the dvd's we'll post some footage. In the meantime, RySpace.com has mp3's from the show! And if you have photos of the show on Flickr, please tag them "movable hype".
Movable Hype 7.0, our concert series, is TONIGHT! Come enjoy the music and some drink specials with us, won't you? Here's the lineup:
Movable Hype 7.0, our concert series, is this Monday April 17th! We couldn't be more excited about this show. Check out the lineup:
We announced the lineup for the next Movable Hype show on Friday, and we have one more addition to make that we're really excited about! The Slack Republic has joined the bill, and they'll be closing out the night, so be sure to stick around for them.
Our next Movable Hype show (7.0, for those counting) is coming up soon, and we wanted to give you a heads up with some details...
Since it's already been mentioned on some other sites, we thought we'd give you a big heads up for the next Movable Hype show. It's not until April 17th, but tickets are already on sale. You can buy them here. So far we've confirmed Cloud Cult, and we'll be announcing the rest of the bands and comedian hosts as we book them!
Day 2 was significantly busier than Day 1. All in all, we made it to 12 different shows between 10:00am and 2am, we'll highlight the highlights here.
We're about to dive head first into the CMJ music marathon. Honestly, there are ALWAYS a lot of shows to go to in this city. This week, however, there are more shows with open bars and more bands that aren't from Brooklyn.
It's CMJ week in NYC. Arcade Fire, Devendra Banhart, Lady Sovereign, Feist, Nouvelle Vague, Doves, The Wrens, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cursive, !!!, Wolf Parade, The Hold Steady, Brian Jonestown Massacare... we can't even begin to list everything going on. Why should we? CMJ's listings reveal everything you need to know. Further inspection of CMJ.OhMyRockness.com lets you in on even more. The CMJ archives at BrooklynVegan will clue you in even further, and Central Village's itinerary has more than enough to keep you busy. Instead we'll focus on a few select non-CMJ shows happening during CMJ.
It's that time of year again. The humidity lifts, the smell of fall is teasing us from just around the corner, we really really want to buy school supplies (it's a nostalgia thing)...and, of course, musicians from all over descend upon the city and replace our quiet evenings with some rock. Okay, so our evenings aren't usually as quiet as we'd like them to be, and they do usually involve rock, but CMJ will multiply our norm by about 8 gazilion.
What a disaster yesterday was. After prominently featuring the Cloud Cult show at Knitting Factory last week, it ends up the show was never actually happening. If you bought tickets, contact Knitting Factory and/or Ticketweb and get your money back. The good news: we wouldn't have been able to talk about Cloud Cult on Gothamist otherwise, so hopefully you discovered a great new band (still haven't listened?).
We hope your Fourth of July experience in Battery Park was better than ours. At least we saw a Turkey. (Zelda the Turkey to be exact.)
